Chapter Eight

Blake heard Jackton and Narisa before she saw them. Blake's eyes snapped open as a dozen pebbles came raining down around them. She looked up to see them standing on the roof opposite, screaming and throwing rocks. The Corrupted around them scattered, disappearing into the shadows. Blake stared up at them, grinning like a maniac. "Why are you two holding hands?" Narisa giggled. Embarrassed, Blake let go of Isaac. "Not important." Blake said quickly. "How'd you get up there?" Jackton jumped down, landing with a thud. "There was a ladder leant against one of the houses." he changed back to the subject at hand "We need to get going." Blake nodded as Narisa landed next to her. Blake took a deep breath, and followed Jackton down the winding street.

"There's one thing I don't get." Narisa said as they jogged back towards the East gate. "Shoot." Replied Blake, only half listening. "The corrupted are usually solitary hunters, so why were there so many in one place?" Narisa asked. Blake shrugged, she'd been wondering about that. It didn't make sense. "Look, it was just bad luck. Ok? I bet no one else had any problems." Blake replied. Even as the words left her mouth she knew something was wrong. General Kip was up ahead, looking extremely worried and surrounded by only around three trainees. He turned as they approached. "Did you see anyone else?" He asked. Blake was confused to hear the concern in his voice. "No. Lucky to make it back at all." Isaac grumbled. If the General heard Isaac then he chose not to say anything. Instead he told them to go and stand by the wall with the rest of the trainees. "So. Theories about what was up with the corrupted?" Jackton asked. "Wait, were you attacked as well?" One girl asked. "By, like, slimy monster things?" Blake turned, shocked by what she was hearing. "Yes, one attacked you?" She asked. The girl laughed. "One? Try ten!" Blake didn't reply. Something was going on. And she was going to find out what.

By sunset only twelve of the trainees had returned, General Kip decided that nobody else was coming back, and they set off back to the inner city. Blake didn't talk to anyone, she was lost in her thoughts. Until now the corrupted had been solo hunters, and although it was extremely difficult to take one down, it wasn't impossible. If something had caused them to form packs and work together.... they didn't stand a chance. "Blake, there are twelve of us." Narisa said, breaking Blake's train of thought. "So?" Blake asked. Narisa rolled her eyes and waited for Blake to understand. It hit her like a ton of bricks. If there were only twelve...then that meant they would all be eligible to become Paladins.
