Chapter 8

Dropping my sketchbook and pencil on my bed, I leaned back and glanced around for a moment. I was nearly done with my second art piece I've done today, when I decided to take a break for the day. The first piece I did was of the black wolf leaping forward, and I used a piece of sheer white parchment paper which I felt blurred the background quite well, though I had to go in and touch it up to make everything seamless. The second work which I still need to finish was just a last minute idea I wanted to experiment with and was focusing on the wolf when he landed, with a piece of moon peeking out from behind his head. The moon itself was cut out of the canvas fabric, with tissue paper layered in a way to look like the moon when held to the light.

I observed it a for a moment more, making mental notes of things I need to do. I have been debating if I should make puncture holes for the stars so they can light uplike the moon when held up to the light. Regardless of what I decide, I was not going to continue it tonight.

Getting up, I went and scrubbed whatever paint and glue that was left on my hands and headed for the kitchen for something to eat. Pulling the bread and lunch meat out, Johann called from the living room, "Don't ruin your appetite for dinner. We'll be heading over in the next half hour!"

Glancing at the clock confused, I quickly remembered Ben's family was inviting us for dinner. Where has the time gone? Did it really take me till 5:30 to get done with a couple of drawings? Putting the sandwich stuff away, I grabbed a piece of fruit instead, hopefully to quench my hunger for a little while longer.

"What is for dinner anyways? Did they say?"

"I think they've mentioned grilling something but I'm not sure yet. By the way how's your school work going?" He put down the laptop he was typing on onto the coffee table as he looked up.

"Everythings going fine. I think I might be pushing ahead in art in terms of my concentration work." At the thought of the drawings, my mind started dabbling back to the dreams and vision that I've had.

Guessing by my expression, my father switched subjects. "By the way, what was with you yesterday? You looked spooked just seeing Vikas and then there was the gunshot...?" Ever growing concern ladened his voice and threading into his brows. "You've been acting a bit differently surrounding this move."

"...Yesterday I've started having visions. Just like those dreams." I started hesitantly. "...I-it happened after another shot was fired and was very brief. And as for the first shot,it didn't help that he looked familiar."

After a moment he said, "Come here." Grabbing my chin and shoulders, he studied me intently for what felt like ages. "Have you been getting into anything, perhaps hanging around bad kids? Drugs? Alcohol?"

"What? No. And the only person I've been really hanging out with is Ben."

"Stay that way. You look normal. I think these dreams of yours are probably just in your head. No need to get so worked up." Almost like an afterthought he asked, "You say he looks familiar, eh?"

Getting up, I started heading back to my room. "I'm getting ready. I'm starving."

"Meet you back down here in a few minutes"

Heading towards the front door, which was cracked signaling that Johann had already stepped out, I finished throwing on my red and black button up over my dusty-grey tee. Reaching my phone, I messaged Ben we're on our way.

"His house is just a few down the road, no need to take the truck," I told my dad, who was leaning against the truck, keys in hand.

Eyebrow raised, he took a glance down the road towards their house. Despite the distance between each house, it wasn't that far considering. But without question he started walking.

Walking up to their yard, I instantly see Felix, Ben's youngest brother, reading under an old maple tree near their front porch. Before I could say anything i instantly felt a cold spray on the right side of my face.

"Oh, sorry about that! Was just trying to finish washing the cars before dinner. Everyone else should be outback, I think." Koda turned to my father, pausing what he was doing, and held out his hand. "Koda. I'm Ben's brother, and over there is our baby brother Felix."

While they exchanged pleasantries and started talking a little bit about cars,I took the liberty to head out back and let the rest know we're here. Following the skinny pebble pathway that leads to the gate to the backyard, I found Vikas setting up the grill.

As soon as I got to the patio area a somewhat petite lady with long auburn hair walked out carrying a few things. When she looked over and saw me she said in a light and bubbly voice, "Hey, Sebastian isn't it? It's good to see you! And just in time, we're just getting ready to start cooking. I'm Fairlight, Ben's mom, by the way." I barely made it a few more feet before being pulled into a hug. She introduced herself to dad as well when he came around with Koda shortly after me.

From the grill, Vikas said, "Glad y'all were able to come!." After he looked around for a second, he turned towards Koda and asked, "Where's your brothers? Go get them and have them help your mother finish setting up!"

Feeling a little awkward and helpless, I tried looking for something to do. "If you want to help with something, you can help bring some food out," Fairlight said. "The kitchen is right through the back door."

Having just walked in and started to grab a couple things off the counter, I turned around only to be quickly surprised. A man, although must have just walked in from somewhere, was glancing in my direction. Besides the exceeding wisdom shining through his eyes and a spare few grey hairs, he looks hardly a day older than Vikas. Nose twitching as if he smells something, his attention breaks as Ben walks through the doorway.

"So i see you just met my grandfather." Ben then walked over to one of the drawers and pulled out a grill lighter, passing it to his grandfather who was on his way out the back door.

Before exiting he nodded in my direction and said, "Nice to meet you."

"By the looks of him, grandfather wouldn't have been my first guess," I replied on my way to the door as well. "So he lives around here, I've taken?"

"Right down the road." On his way towards the front door he continues, "My couple of uncles used to live nearby, but they moved when I was little and we don't get to see them much nowadays."

A couple hours later, we decided to start wrapping up. Standing up, I started to collect the remaining dinnerware when Seb joined in.

"Don't expect to do it."

"Says the guest." I replied back, entering the back door, followed by Seb. Rinsing off the dishes, i start setting everything into the dishwasher. Glancing over, I see Seb already starting to pack away any leftovers on the counters.

A moment later I heard grandfather enter the kitchen. "Here's the last of everything, boys. I think I'm going to retire for the night." He yawned and turning his attention to him, he continued, "It was a pleasure to meet you, Sebastian."

Not long after, they headed back home. Rounding the corner in the upstairs hallway to my own room, I decided to finish up one of my AP books for the night. Cracking it open, I begun to read.

Looking up at the clock, it was just after midnight. Picking up the book off the bed, I realized I must have passed out not long after I started reading. Before I fell back to sleep I headed for the bathroom just down the hall. But before I could reach it something I heard made me pause in my tracks. Still a little dazed, I couldn't fully make it out, but after a moment I realized what I was hearing.

"...he is the one. I know it."

"But there is no guarantee he is. Have you witnessed his mark? Him change?" After a moments pause, Vikas continued, "I do agree he looks like him but he appears so human."

"It isn't unheard of to have a delayed first change. However it is rare and in Sebastian's case it seems quite unusual from most," Grandfather replied, somehow sounding more serious and authoritative than usual. "My best guess is due to his lack of exposure to our kind, regardless if it's his pack or another, that has affected him."

"What should we do?"

"The best thing is to wait, to keep it a secret. Didn't you mention before his reaction to gunshots?"

"...Yes. But what does that have anything to do with this though?" There was clearly some confusion in father's voice.

"His father's memories, perhaps."

"If he's receiving his father's memories, does that mean..."

"In many cases yes. But we are not positive. I know we all miss him, he became like family. Lets just hope he is still out there so we all can see him again, and for God's sake, for Sebastian."

Before either one of them came out of the room, I continued to my initial destination. Reflecting on what I've just heard, it seemed that a few questions have been answered but I now have many more questions than answers.
