Chapter 3
Arriving at the house, the remainder of our trip seemed to have flown by. It being quarter to 5, i can see the sun peeking through the still fairly green leaves of the trees as they russell in the light breeze. The street that we now live on has maybe a handful of homes that I can see from the driveway, spaced apart and many trees surrounding each one.
Our house is a fairly simple one, being a two story house with 3 bedrooms. It has an off-white siding with a red brick porch and the garage to its right. The front door looks to be a reddish mahogany with a large stained glass window in it's center and the shutters seem to be of a similar reddish color. It doesn't look very cookie-cutter with the neighboring houses like where we just moved from.
"Let me get the keys and then we can start bringing things in," Johann exclaimed as he grabbed a couple of grocery bags and headed to the door.
Grabbing the remaining groceries plus our dinner, I made my way toward the house as well. "I'll start unloading the groceries," I said.
Bags in hand, as we stepped in we were greeted to a somewhat short foyer hallway with chocolate brown wood floors and sand colored walls. To our left there was a doorway that led to the living room, which contained a brick fireplace just opposite of the doorway, with a window on either side and another, bigger, window facing the front yard. There was only a couple of furnishings in the otherwise empty room. On the right there was the dining room, with a rather simple and small chandelier hanging over a rustic round dining table and what looks like a tiny storage closet in one corner. At the end of the foyer there was a hallway leading to another couple of rooms on the left and to the right there was a set of stairs and then the kitchen.
When entering the kitchen there was an island in the middle, one side having a ledge with a couple of stools. Setting our bags there I began to unpack the groceries. There wasn't a pantry like at our last home so I placed all the pantry items into the cabinets. The cabinets were stained to match the flooring, which is the same as in the foyer and hallway. And though the doors of the lower cabinets were entirely wood, the upper ones had glass panels in them, those of which matched the back door next to the staircase.
By the time i was finishing up putting the last of the groceries into the fridge, dad popped in with a couple of boxes that were labeled for the kitchen and had set them onto the island. Digging into one of them, he went ahead and pulled out a couple of utensils and placed them on the end of the island where the chairs are. "Let's eat while the food's hot. Then we'll deal with the boxes." He already began opening the bag.
On top there was a paper bag of tortillas and salsa, and from there there was a foil packet and three tins. The bottom tin was the only one that was labeled with the dish's number and name, which was my stuffed chicken with rice and shrimp. Once opened, the incredible smell of grilled meat and veggies immediately wafted through the air.
"Holy hell!" I exclaimed, stuffing my first bite of food into my mouth.
Before long we had finished dinner, dad having about a third of his dish left which he's put away for leftovers, and both of us feeling stuffed. After having a chance to regroup we began unloading the truck and trailer before we begin unpacking any boxes.
"Want me to bring the kayaks into the backyard?" I asked, starting to unhook them from the roof.
"Yeah go ahead. I'll start carrying things in."
With both in hand, I rounded the corner to see a spacious backyard with a strip of forest I didn't notice pulling up. Noticing a shed that couldn't be much bigger than a small garage near the tree line, I headed in its direction. After realizing the shed was locked on the door I just set the kayaks against the wall.
Reaching the car, I heard Johann call out, "The oars and life jackets are buried in the very back. We'll put those in the shed later."
I started collecting a couple boxes that were for various places in the house and brought them in, placing them in the rooms they belong to. After a few trips most of the things have been brought in, save for a couple heavy boxes that will take the both of us to carry. Walking in the foyer, I went ahead and grabbed my handful of belongings that were laying near the living room entrance way and headed upstairs. Once there I look around. There was an open area we'd probably turn into a louange facing the front yard with a bedroom connected to it. Facing the backyard there was a small bathroom in one corner of the house and in the other corner was another bedroom which was situated right next to the stairs. In the space between the bathroom and stairs was a balcony just big enough to fit a couple chairs and a small table.
The bedroom I decided on was the one facing the backyard. It already had a bed with two nightstands that matched the simple, stained wood dresser on either side under the window onlooking the backyard. The dresser sat across from it and a set of white closet doors on the left. Beyond that it was a fairly empty room with pale green walls and wood floors the color of sand.
Dropping my stuff by the dresser, I turned back and began descending the stairs. Just then i could hear dad call out, "Hey, can ya come help me with these last couple boxes on the trailer? All of them are yours."
"On my way!" When i got down there there were a few pieces of my shelving unit which was partially taken apart for the move and then there were a couple of other boxes that although they're not very big, they are still pretty heavy considering. Dad already had one of the two large pieces of shelving lifted up. Grabbing the other end,we carried it through the garage and up into my room. It ultimately took us about 45 minutes to completely unload everything. With it being past 6:30, we decided to start unpacking by necessity and leave the less important for tomorrow.
By the time it hit 10 o'clock, we were worn out and decided to call it quits for the night. We managed to get a lot more done than what we initially thought we'd do. However, there was still a lot to do, not just what still needs to be unpacked. During the time we away our things, I was able to pick up on a few details of each room I didn't notice previously, zipping in and out with boxes or bags. Like the occasional bit of wear and tear on certain areas of the walls or floors or how the walls in the kitchen were more of a peachy-tan color instead of the sand color like in the foyer and hall.
Finding dad in the kitchen, I saw he was reading what looked like a note and phone in hand. "Hey, whats up?"
"I found a note that had a house painter's number in a drawer and was trying to look him up."
"Pretty soon to think about getting a painter, don't you think?" I looked around in the kitchen for something sweet, ultimately reaching for some cereal.
"Of course not right now but I would like to get some updating done sooner than later. This place could use a bit of a brightening up for one thing. The colors look a bit old fashioned for my taste." Putting the note back he continued, "Well its starting to get late, I'm gonna hit the hay. Goodnight!"
"Goodnight," I replied.
Before making my way up to my room I headed into the living room and started sifting through the dvds we had. While I usually am not the biggest fan of comedies, I figured after a day like today something stupid yet funny would put me in a cheerier mood before going asleep. Once I found one, I brought it up and put it into an old laptop of mine and started watching it.
While it played, I started sifting through and moving what of my belongings around my room. As I brought everything up I simply just set it all wherever there was room, so long as I can walk through it all. Most of everything there I pushed up against one of the empty walls, leaving one box and a couple duffel bags containing my clothes.
Being that I don't have hangers available as they're still packed away somewhere, I started putting them in the dresser, which is what I use for most of my clothes anyways. Taking a short pause, I took a look into the closet. The closets I usually see in homes are often a bit shallow. But this one seems to be slightly deeper, and is fortunately empty. Glancing back to where the dresser is, I believe I might be able to fit it in the closet and still have room to hang some things. Definitely will be a project for tomorrow.
Once i managed to get to a stopping point, I layed out on my bed and continued on with the movie but before long I started drifting off into a restless, and near dreamless sleep. My body kept going back and forth between a deep sleep to getting flashes of my dream the night before, which though I wouldn't wake, they would be enough to cause me to stir. And they seem to appear shortly after I completely fall asleep again.
Eventually, when I stirred, I fully awoke to sunlight stinging my eyes. Sitting up, I felt vaguely sore all over and was dazed and confused. My bedding was a complete mess, but my laptop sat undisturbed in the same spot but dead. Trying to fix my surely wild hair, I stumbled down the stairs, hearing some shuffling around coming from god knows where.
After a few moments I started becoming more aware of my surroundings, finding myself just standing in the middle of the foyer. Before i knew it I heard footsteps coming down the stairs, revealing dad with a mug in hand.
"Hey Sebby! Thought I heard ya get up." He took a closer glance at me. "Boy you look rough. Its about half past noon by now, didn't think you'd be getting up. Are ya alright?"
It took me a moment before my brain to even form words. "Its past noon? I could have sworn I just went to bed." I walked toward the kitchen to make a cup of coffee, dad in tow.
"I should be nearing the end of my stuff so later whenever you're alive and ready, I can help with that shelving."
Having nodded, I asked, "Last night I saw that the dresser in my room light fit in the closet. Do ya think you can help me with that too?"
"Sure can do. I'll let ya get on with your little breakfast. Gonna try finishing what i can in the meantime." He then turned and headed back up stairs.
Before I went back inside, i grabbed a few tools from the shed to help put the shelving back together. It was only a few feet away from where i sat while eating my breakfast. Much of the yard had already been lit up from the bright sun, leaving areas closest to the trees and shed in shade.
Once in my room, i set the tools on my pile of shelves and went to work. Having already done putting away my clothes, minus whatever handful that needed a hanger, i started sorting out the boxes, and moving a few away from the wall my bookshelf is going to be put. The majority of what i had in boxes were either books or records, and i had only a couple of boxes of each. Before long, dad had come to give me a hand.
