Chapter 2: Never underestimate a human

P.O.V of Sombra

A few days had passed since I saw Luz, and so far nothing extraordinary had happened. We were in the afternoon, and I was walking in the shopping part of the town. It was rare that I went out almost twice in a row in a week.

"Tell me, how are you going to see the little girl again ?" asked Amon.

"I don't know, I know she lives with the owl lady, but I don't know where she lives anymore... Hey I have an idea !" I exclaimed before stepping away from the road towards a small alley.

I jumped on several crates so that I could grab onto the edge of the roof of a house and climb above, to get a little view of the city.

"I can do a sort of aerial exploration. Maybe I would end up spotting her house. Then who knows, we can always meet Luz on the way", I said, looking at the inhabitants of the city.

"It's a good idea, and that way you will get some exercise. It's almost always me doing this kind of stuff, lazy."

"Hey ! I point out to you that my abs prove the opposite."

"And I remind you that it is thanks to me if you have any, since it is a side effect when you become the host of a symbiote, in addition to the canines", he retorted in a sarcastic manner.

And it was true, since I was his host, I had gained muscle and had canines like that of a ferocious animal. At least it was convenient for eating. I started to jump from roof to roof, trying to locate a house that could be Eda's home. Along the way, I passed those pesky demon hunters who had managed to get a nice catch. These were people that Amon and I avoided a lot, if he did capture us they would pocket the jackpot. I ended up concentrating again, trying to find the owl lady's house. Speaking of her, I spotted her in the distance in front of a small store, she looked pissed off... or maybe stressed. I walked over and landed on the roof of the building opposite the one she was in. Not far from her and closer to me was Luz with two of her friends, surely.

"She made friends..." I whispered, smiling.

I listened to them talk about that famous moonlight conjuring that the little Blight had organized by inviting everyone except them, calling them dorks. I groaned slightly, this little one was really a plague. Well, it wasn't 100% her fault, yeah... I knew more than you might think. Seeing the facts, Luz suggested they do this evening with her so that her friends can do it. My smile didn't leave my lips when I saw that she was still so kind and ready to help others. I was in a good position to know that.

"They will surely come home, I will be able to follow them ..."

"If I was you, I wouldn't do that.", Amon interrupted.

"Huh? But, why?"

"If you want to gain their trust, you won't get there by spying on them, it's creepy. We better help the old woman."

It's true that now that he was saying it... it was weird. I was probably going to have to let things happen. However, I couldn't see what he meant by helping his mentor.

"First, her name is Eda. Second, help her? Why ?"

"While you were too focused on the little human, I listened to her conversation with the merchant. Apparently, she needs an urgent elixir, and she looks like she is transforming."

"Transforming ? Like she was cursed ?" I asked puzzled.

"Maybe."

I've heard of it before, but I didn't know it really existed, even though deep down I wasn't surprised. It couldn't be easy to live with, especially if we turned into something ... surely a beast for her. Kind of like werewolves.

"And so you want us to find a way to take this curse away from him?

"I said we were going to help her not cause a miracle. The merchant told her to go to the night market to see a certain person."

"Who ?"

"... Grimhammer", he replied in disgust.

I slowly widened my eyes, he was part of my bad encounters since he had tried to scam me by threatening to reveal to the authorities that I was a human. Unfortunately for him, he had come across a human who had a "toy" from her world on her.

"Okay, but she can't defend herself against him? She is the most powerful witch of the Boiling Islands."

"A curse can have effects on the magic of the person concerned, they may not even be able to use it. As you said, she is the most powerful witch, but she is also wanted. So if she is facing him, helpless and with no magic..."

"He will swindle her and denounce her to the emperor's cover", I finished. "Got it, I'll take care of it. Looks like I'm going to have to pull out a certain thing."

"I can't wait to see this ~", he said with a voice like a cartoon villain.

Seeing that Eda and Luz had already left, I also left the street to go home, and wait for night to fall. If that dirty pig was going to rip him off, he was going to regret it bitterly.

- A few hours later -

As soon as the sun had set, I headed for the night market from my house. This time, I put on my black cape which in addition to hiding my ears also hid my face very slightly. If I came across the scammer, I didn't want him to recognize me. When I arrived, I immediately analyzed the stands to locate his. Once located, I looked around for a good spot to hide. I was lucky, because right in front of the booth was a sort of tower. It was certainly a bit far to hear them when the time came, but not for Amon. He could hear a lot better than me. I jumped up without anyone seeing me and got into position.

It wasn't until a few minutes later that Eda arrived in front of Grinhammer's stand. I watched them, and Amon listened to them. For now, nothing was happening, well I thought. Difficult to since the witch was with her back to me.

"What is happening ?" I whispered.

"The little one has the elixir, but he said he'll sell it for a thousand snails."

"Seriously? What a bastard ... I'll take care of it", before I start to get up.

Only, I was stopped short, as if I could no longer move and something was preventing me. Of course, I knew it was Amon. Even if he didn't take my place, he could control me.

"No, not right now. Eda offered her a bet with a deck of cards, if she wins she will have the elixir. If he wins you can intervene." he told me before removing his control over me, letting me move.

I nodded and went back to my hiding place, watching them. The game was rough, cruel, a carnage for Eda. It lasted a while, but Grimhammer had won it. She had been completely slaughtered, and I knew it was going to take a bad turn. I straightened up and took something from the inside of my cape that would help me. Something pretty ... deadly.

Eda had lost, and unfortunately what the one who had defeated her wanted was none other than King, but there was no way she would let him take him. She was going to cast a spell on him, but the curse was working on her, and she had no more magic. Seeing this, Grimhammer did not hesitate a single second to chain it, and she fell to the ground.

"You think this can to stop me? I can still bite your ankles."

"You don't think I know who you are ? Eda, the owl lady," he said as Eda widened her eyes, realizing the mess she was in. " That's right, I've seen your wanted posters around here. I wonder how much the Emperor's coven would pay me to hand you over. "

Eda was angry with herself for having offered a game of card to this dirty pig, all because of her addiction. If she hadn't, maybe then she could still have used her magic and settled this matter. Now all she had to do was hope for a miracle.

At this same moment, a small sound is heard, as if something has just been activated. For some reason she didn't know, Grimhammer listening to the noise shuddered and started to get nervous. She finally saw that in the stall, just behind him, stood a person under a black cloak, who was pointing some sort of weapon straight at the pig's head.

"It's true that you can make a lot of money, too bad it won't turn out like that", she said with a voice that was familiar to the old witch.

"I-Is that you ...?" he asked without moving, he didn't even want to turn around.

Her attacker took a mirror in a frame and set it on the counter, so he could see her, before removing the hood of her cape to reveal Sombra, to Eda's relief. She still had the hood of her sweatshirt to hide her ears and her gaze was rather intimidating.

"Sombraaa... m-my dear friend... what are you doing here?" he asked with a hint of fear.

"I was just passing by, but let's not waste time, will you?" Let her and her friend go, right now, she ordered coldly.

"I-I can't, she lost, and we had a d-deal."

"Bad luck for you, I don't care. Do you really want me to use this when you know very well what it does ?" she said, squeezing the gun closer to the pig's head." Where I lived, it's called a pistol, to be more precise it's a Beretta 92. I say that because it would be cruel for you to die without knowing precisely what killed you. Oh, and needless to say you won't have time to cast a spell on me before I shoot you, right ?"

Once her threats were made, she escaped a devilish little smile, showing her teeth and of course her canines. This was too much for the one who, usually, always came to his end thanks to his scams.

"O-Okay okay ! I'll free them !" he said, quickly removing the chains that held Eda and also letting King go.

Sombra jumped over the counter to join them, before re-aiming his weapon between the eyes of his victim who flinched.

"I almost forgot, it seems like your client wanted something, give it to me."

"I don't see what you're talking about..."

He thought that maybe he could at least fool her about it, but she raised an eyebrow as if to say "seriously ?" before extending his hand. He groaned before brutally putting the elixir back in her hand, which she handed to Eda.

"Thanks kid." she said before drinking the potion.

She felt her magic return to her, and her feathers also disappeared. Sombra, she let out a smirk before putting her gun away. Grimhammer began to curse her and Eda, and there, a gigantic bird's foot fell on its stand. Sombra couldn't believe his eyes, although the situation amused her a lot.

"Looks like you are the cursed one."

"Ah ! Good one !" Eda retorted before realizing something. " Wait was that my house ?"

P.O.V of Sombra

In the end, everything had gone well. This devious little one was still scared of me so much, no wonder since he saw me take down a demon with a well-aimed shot.

As I had helped him, Eda offered to take me home. Of course, I accepted, as much I liked to walk, but this evening had exhausted me. I boarded a scepter for the first time, and I had to admit it was really awesome. However, the trip was not long, and she ended up arriving in front of my house.

"You live here ?" she said, surprised when she saw how bad my home looked.

"Yeah... it's not luxury, but you get used to it over time," I replied, going downstairs.

"I see. Oh, and thank you again for helping me, you're pretty good with intimidation and scaring people."

"You're welcome, and that's normal, I wasn't going to let him rip you off. Besides, if Luz wants to become a great witch, she will surely need her mentor badly, right?"

She smiled, nodding, before suddenly taking on a somewhat curious expression.

"Hey... this weapon, the one you used against him, can I see it?"

I didn't quite understand why she wanted to see it, but I accepted and gave it to her. She observed it very closely and attentively in its smallest details... she even sniffed it-. Then I saw in her eyes that there had been a revelation in her head as she handed the gun to me.

"You said that this weapon came from where you lived, right ?"

That's it, she was starting to understand what no one had noticed.

"Yes, it is", I replied.

"But... it's a human weapon. It means that you are..."

A small smirk formed at the corners of my lips, as I picked up the gun as I pulled off my hood, revealing my ears and showing him the truth.

"Yeah, I'm a human."

"But I don't understand. How did you manage to come here ? The first time I saw you, it was ..."

"Four years ago ?" I interrupted before leaning back against the unstable walls of my house. "Yes, I was Luz's age and came here the same way she did. The difference is, you haven't noticed me, and I've been living here ever since."

Of course Eda was shocked to know that another human had come through her portal, and long before Luz, that was to be expected.

"You live here now, but your family isn't worried about you?"

This time, it was my turn to shudder in the face of these questions which were a bit painful for the moment.

"Well... It's because of them that I'm here... I prefer not to talk about it... But in summary, I am no longer welcome in my world..." I replied sadly.

Eda looked at me before looking at my house, a wooden plank of which shattered. After that, she laid a compassionate look on me before it was a warm hand on my shoulder.

"If my calculations are correct, you're 19, aren't you ?" she asked me before I nodded. "Believe me, I know all about family issues. I don't know if you ran away from home or if you were kicked out, but what I do know is that no one deserves this and no one deserves to be forced to live like this because of things that we don't have control on, especially at your age. How about a real home ?"

I listened to her words with great attention, they were filled with kindness and benevolence. But I was puzzled by her question.

"What do you mean? Where?"

"In my home, at the owl house ! Plus, I'm sure Luz would be happy to have someone from her world by her side", she offered with a big smile.

I widened my eyes, I was surprised, nervous and full of joy at the same time. I couldn't believe she just offered this to me. Not only could I be lucky enough to live in a real house that didn't threaten to fall in every moment, but on top of that, I could spend time with Luz... like before.

"Are you sure ? I mean... you barely know me."

"Maybe, but it's the same for you, and yet that didn't stop you from helping us. So what do you say about it ?"

"I... okay, I accept ! Don't worry I'll help you as much as possible at your house and even with the human object stand", I said enthusiastically for the first time in a long time.

"Very well, I will pick you up tomorrow morning, that will give you time to take your things, and also that will give me time to have an explanation about my house which was walking in the middle of the city-."

I nodded before she said "goodbye" to me, and flew away. Just like last time, my smile didn't want to leave my lips. I felt ... happy.

"You see, I told you that spying on them wasn't going to help you. It was by helping them that you received help."

"Tell me since when do you take yourself for a wise man ?" I retorted amused. "In any case we're going to have to be more discreet, but don't worry I will make sure that you can continue to let off steam. But just in case... enjoy this evening."

"Don't worry, I'll be fine." he said before swallowing Sombra with his substance to take his place and rushing towards the forest.
