Chapter 1: Sombra

On the soil of the boiling islands, the sun had risen for quite some time. Each inhabitant was wandering about their occupation or just trying to pass the time. Among them, a young human with brown hair and an innocent smile was with her wizard friends. A scene of great rarity, because until today, no one had seen a human in the area before.

They were talking about this great convention of wizard, and of course the human named Luz wanted to go there at all costs. Every new thing she discovered in the boiling islands was one more wonder. Any human fan of fantasy would be in the same state. And yet, somewhere and a little further down in a rather old house, there was someone who was already used to all this.

P.O.V of Sombra

I was lying in a very uncomfortable bed, in which I had slept for four years, trying to get a big sleep for once. But as always...

"Wake up!" A deep voice had cried impatiently.

Of course, that quickly woke me up with a start, annoyed. I glanced through the window which was dirty, the outside was very inconspicuous, like a blurry image. I rubbed my eyes, trying to adjust to the daylight coming through windows and small holes in the walls.

"Two minutes Amon... first I need a..."

"Coffee ?" he said as he handed me a mug with his sort of tentacle literally sticking out of my back.

I let out a light, tired and monotonous laugh before taking it with a small thank you as I stood up, as the tentacle returned in me and disappeared. I struggled a bit, but managed to open the window, so I could look outside. Yes, I lived in a house that was in a bad state, but I still had a nice little view of the city. Despite all this time spent here, I thought I would never get used to it. Between the many people, all so different and of course the wizards and witches, it was something incredible.

And then there was me... a simple human trying to live as best she could, well... almost. Let's say that to describe myself, you shouldn't really use "me", but "us".

"Do you know that today there is the convention ?"

"Yeah I know Amon, it is said that there is also a mystery guest. Do you have any idea who this might be ?" I questioned.

" Not really, I'm just dreading the moment of the speech of the members of the emperor's coven. Blah blah we are all powerful, blah blah we are the elite, blah blah blah we serve our dear emperor", he said as a tentacle came out and imitated a hand which itself imitated a mouth.

" Yeah, and for the 4th consecutive time for this year, I forbid you to eat anyone from their clan. I must remind you that we must not be spotted, ESPECIALLY in front of them."

The voice groaned a little and I rolled my eyes with a small smirk at the corners of my lips. He was always like that, a little grumpy, but he had a good bottom. He was my faithful friend, and we were inseparable ... literally.

I finish my last sip of coffee before stretching out. It was time to prepare. To blend in, I no longer wore human clothes, but clothes that I had taken here, or rather stolen. Dark blue pants, boots, a dark gray sweatshirt with a dark red sleeveless vest over it. Yeah I love dark colors, after all my name is not Sombra for no reason. I also sometimes wore a black cape, but it wasn't going to be necessary. The hood of my sweatshirt was going to be enough to hide my ears, and Amon made sure it didn't fall off, as it was always done.

Once outside, I walked over to where the convention was taking place with my hands in my pockets. I was chatting with Amon, even though from the outside it seemed like I was talking to myself. But no, Amon was part of me, we are one, and he can talk to me. I was the only one to hear it, like a voice in my head. Except when of course I let him have control, or when he just sticks his head out, but that's very rare.

I finally arrived, and had to admit it was very crowded, but that didn't change from previous years. To be fair, I've always looked at the minor covens stands, but never at the main nine. You are probably wondering why I was going there, well there are two reasons.

The first one was a fun activity for me, and every time I came I discovered new things. Plus, going to a place with people was good for my sanity, since I have lived half alone for a few years. And finally, the last reason is ...

"Hello Sombra!"

I turned to face the familiar female voice, to see a young woman with dark purple hair wearing a cook's outfit. She was part of the baker's coven, and she was at her stand. I joined her with a small smirk on my lips.

"Hello, did you manage to bring people to your coven, madam ?"

"Come on my dear, I've known you for a long time, you can call me Violet ! But yes, we had a few people. Anyway, here's for you", she said happily.

She knelt down to pull out one of their famous cupcakes. She knew my complicated situation, which meant that I could rarely afford to treat myself to little treats. So every year since we met, she gave me a cupcake. There was a lot of free stuff during the convention, but their cakes were my favorite. Sometimes she even let me take some home. I took it gently, my gaze softening a bit.

"Thank you very much, mad-... I mean violet, you are really nice. Believe me that someday I'll pay you back no matter how."

"Don't worry about it, and it's free, though you should be careful. There are a lot of guards today, if they see that you are not part of a coven or that you are human ..."

Ah yeah, the law about coven. If we are not part of a coven, that can be considered a crime and being of legal age that could pose a problem for me. For the fact that I am human I did not know, apart from her and some bad encounters, nobody knew. She found out by accident when my hood blew off, that's why now I always ask Amon to make sure that doesn't happen again.

"Oh it's okay, if they see that I'm not in a coven, I'll tell them that I am here to join one. They never arrested me until today, so I should be fine."

"Yes ... oh, but speaking of that! You'll never guess !"

"What ?" I asked, starting to eat my cupcake.

"There's going to be a witches duel. A young girl from Hexside against a human !" she exclaimed.

Suddenly, I choked on the piece of cupcake I had taken and coughed for a few seconds. Once calm, I looked at her with wide eyes, completely in shock.

"A human ?! Are you sure ??" I questioned sharply, almost in panic.

"Y-yes, the fight is taking place right now in the theater, Sombra is everything ok-?"

Before I even let her finish her sentence, I put the cupcake down and rushed towards the place of the duel. I was filled with emotion that I couldn't describe. Joy, stress, hope, nervousness, fear and more.

I finally arrived, and unfortunately for me the duel had already started. Right in the middle of the arena was a tall abomination chasing a young girl, was that the human? I had trouble seeing. I noticed his opponent, who I easily recognized as a member of the Blight family, with her green hair.

And I knew one thing, the human was going to be slaughtered-. Yet, as the creature took a step, she tossed it up with its creator in a sort of little tornado.

"How did she do that ?! You told me humans can't do magic!" yelled Amon.

"We can't, someone else is doing this, I don't see any other explanation", I whispered.

I wanted to get closer to the edge, but there were a lot of people, I couldn't see the human girl. And yet I tried throughout the game, until it calmed down. I could see her lightly. Brown hair, tan skin... and special clothes with a cat hoodie. But her face, I couldn't see it.

"Amon what are they talking about ?"

"The human cheated, but apparently the other girl too and ... they got out of the arena-."

"... And you couldn't tell me earlier ?!" I exclaimed, receiving questionable looks from the people sitting next to me before heading for the exit.

I searched for a long time, but nothing. So I tried to change my tactics. But before that, I had something to do.

P.O.V of Luz

This duel had taught me one thing ... that I had to seriously get into sport! Oh, and also that I really needed to learn new spells, and I really hoped Eda would help me with that. We left the convention, when a mysterious person called out to us. A person with spiky hair, almost the same color as mine, same skin, but beautiful light blue eyes. Interesting ~

"So it's true, a human really fought against a witch ?" she said, raising an eyebrow.

She was standing against one of the columns and lifted off before heading towards us. Of course, Eda got on the defensive, but the stranger's face softened. Despite that she was still quite intimidating.

"Oh don't worry, I'm not here to denounce you, I'm the type to avoid the police and the Emperor's clan myself", she assured. "Besides, I'm one of your clients-", she said in a tone of false annoyance.

" Oh yeah... I see who you are", retorted Eda.

When our eyes met his eyes widened slightly in shock. Maybe that was normal, after all I'm the only human on the Boiling Islands. But in any case one thing is certain, she was classy! She approached me and came to my height.

"Tell me, why did you fight the little Blight? As far as I know humans don't do magic."

"She picked on my friend and stepped on her offering, so I dueled her! Except that I had forgotten that I only knew one spell ... But humans can do magic! Look.", I exclaimed, determined to prove to her that she was wrong.

I pulled out my notebook and drew the glyph on it, before touching it and letting the ball of light form. She leaned down and observed it more closely, completely stunned.

"Wow... I wasn't expecting that. I've never seen something like that before, who knows you might be right.  Maybe humans can surely do magic."

"Yep, and I intend to become a great witch.", I say proud of myself.

I made the light dispel before she stood up. She was much taller than me ! King stood behind me, bored and waiting for us to go home. Of course, she noticed it.

" Is it you that this witch attacked ? What was this "offering"?"

"Hmm a cake, and you're weird," he said suspiciously.

Awww he was so cute when he looked bad. The androgynous young woman gave a little "oh", before she seemed to hesitate to do anything. She walked over to him and knelt down before pulling out a cupcake, which she handed him.

" Here, you can take mine, I'm not very hungry."

King's eyes widened before practically snatching it out of her hands, contentedly. She was surprised, but it didn't seem to bother her. At least... I think ? It was hard to tell with her constant stoic expressions.

"I take back what I said you're not weird! And I accept your offering, stranger, it will be the start of my royal feast !"

"Thank you for giving him one, I'm Luz ! Luz Noceda, and you ?" I exclaimed, offering a handshake.

Without understanding why, she froze for a second at hearing my name. As if she had had the revelation of the year. Rather interesting. And then, she acted as if nothing had happened as she shooke my hand.

"Sombra, just Sombra.", she replied with a small smile. "Okay, I won't bother you any longer. Hope we meet again, Luz. I can't wait to see the first human witch in action."

It was with these words that she walked away, her small smile never leaving her lips. Strange, but nice! Honestly, it was far from the strangest encounter I have had since arriving.

"You know her ?" I asked Eda, remembering their conversation.

"She's just a client, I met her 4 years ago, nothing more. She's the lonely type, and most importantly, no one had ever seen her show emotions... well until now. Congratulation kid !" she exclaimed with her usual smile.

Me, making having emotions to someone? It was fun ! It was like in my favorite stories! The main hero brings joy to his future dark ally. Who knows, maybe fate had wanted us to meet.

P.O.V of third person

The sun was setting slowly, giving way to a golden sky. Sombra admired her through her bedroom window, her smile still hadn't left her lips. And for some reason, the bags in her eyes had turned a little red, as if she had been crying.

"I will never get used to this", Amon assumed in his head.

"To what?"

"You and what you're doing with your lips. It's... the first time I see you smile... but I can understand why."

She let out a small laugh, which shocked the creature inside her even more. Another tear rolled down her cheek, as she looked up at the sky.

"It wasn't all done in vain. This is it Amon... She is here, she finally came here. And she has grown so much..." she said between two sobs, her voice cracking.

But she wasn't crying because she was sad. On the contrary, they were tears of joy and relief. The relief to know that many sacrifices have paid off. She took a deep breath before closing the window.

"It will soon be dark ... it may be a great day, but you have the right to stretch your legs."

"Thank you, a little walk will do me the greatest good.", he said in a mean voice.

As she moved to the center of her room, a strange gooey looking blood-red substance formed around her. Her muscles doubled in size, she got a little taller, her whole body was covered in this stuff. And soon, her face disappeared, giving way to another. With big piercing white eyes, and sharp teeth ready to tear anything apart. The new shape made his muscles crack, before smiling.

"Let's go." the frightening creature had said.

But it was no longer Sombra, she had simply left complete control to her friend Amon, the symbiote of the boiling islands she hosts.
