Chapter 8 (Soel)

As I watched the news, I want to scream so badly, "That was me! I did that!" Or perhaps, "I know her! I spoke for her! I know her! She knows me!" Instead, I watched my family react to the television. Everyone except for Jo, who was typing on his phone, was staring in awe at the large screen. After is had ended, I began texting Uil.

ME: Hey, super heroine!

ME: R u enjoying the attention?

ME: Have you even seen the news?

Nothing.

ME: U were awesome!

George's phone rang. "Erin! You're alive!"

Just for the fun of it, I cupped my mouth and shouted to him, "talking to your girlfriend?"

"Jerk," he commented. Becky giggled, and he waved us off, jogging to our bedroom. After he shut the door, Becky and I ran to sit right next to it so we could eavesdrop. I know, how mature of me, right?

"I was worried you had died!" He paused and I couldn't hear what she responded with. I hit my face with my palm.

You idiot! If she was dead, she wouldn't be talking to you.

"I hate you," His voice was plain, neutral."Okay, anyways. What-why do you think Uil and Delfini are doing in Toledo. I mean, it isn't like we have a high crime rate."

I pressed myself against the door. They were talking about me, or rather, Delfini?

"True. But seriously, why have they come now? We have police for the small crimes. Yet we have two people with superpowers." He paused, and I could hear the girl yapping. "I'm not sure, but I think with superheroes, comes super-villains."

He was right. Becky shook my shoulder. "Do you think he is right?" I looked at her. I had never thought about it. Why was I sent here? I remembered the books. I hadn't gone to the fire station with it, had I? I couldn't remember. It hit me, Fred and Julianne still had our books, but that was a matter for Delfini, not for Soel. My job was to keep my family safe.

"I think he might be." I whispered back to her.

"Hello? Are you alright?" He paused. "Alright. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye." I grabbed Becky by the wrist and shoved her to the couch, right when Jo opened the door. I, unfortunately, wasn't lucky enough to get away fast enough. "Dude, again. We aren't plotting your murder. Calm down. I have listened in on your conversations as well." He smiled and sat down on the couch. We watched movies until about eleven, so we were all pretty tired. I pretended like I was falling asleep, just so I could go to bed before the rest of my family to chat with Uil.

"Fine, just don't forget to take your meds and brush your teeth," Mother Becky commanded. I had Epilepsy, a common seizure disorder, so I had to take a gross medication that dissolved under my tongue. I have to push my tongue down on it, so everyone teases me when I have to talk while taking it. It has a sweet taste, so if I lift my tongue, it just floods into my mouth and it is disgusting. It's sweeter than a cup of sugar, but it decreases my anxiety, so I take it. I still have hope I'll grow out of it.

"Whatever you say," I told her "sleepily". I did as she said and went to bed. While they were all in the living room, I shut the bedroom door and created a duplicate of me. I looked at the boy standing before me in the dark. "Just lay down and go to sleep." I pointed to the bed. He nodded, and I began climbing out the window with no problems. I took out my Samsung and messaged Uil.

Me: Y havnt u answered my txts?

Uil: Perhaps if you sent them using proper English words, I might be more prompted to. Unfortunately, I don't really like the "texting language".

Me: Ur up!

Uil: No, I'm not. I'm actually sleep typing.

Uil: What do you want?

Me: I want to meet up with my partner @ the park near the middle school. U no where it is?

She didn't answer.

Me: Seriously? R u really going 2 do this?

Me: fine. You win. Would you like to meet up at the park near the Middle School?

Uil: I would love to. Oh wait, I'm already here. Hurry up, or I'll leave.

I had no doubt she was serious, so I transformed and hopped to the top of a random roof, and from there, I made my way to the park. I saw her playing on the swings, allowing her wings to dangle next to her. She was talking to herself, laughing, occasionally putting her head against the chain.

"Hey, Uil," She jumped up, startled. I was smiling, and I realized being around her made my spirits boost. She was a true friend.

"Oh my god," she touched her chest with one hand, and she was flying high in the air.

"I'm sorry, are you alright?" I saw her eyes were glowing, her owl vision had kicked in. Her eyes were widening, but not just her pupils, the yellow surrounding the dark hole was widening with the pupil. She looked embarrassed, but I couldn't hide my smile.

"Did you hear-"

"No, I wanted to respect your privacy. What you say when you think you are alone, is your business." With anyone else, I wouldn't even consider saying that, but I truly meant it.

"Thanks? So, what did you want to talk about?"

"Well first, I just want to say, we did an awesome job with that fire." She stopped flapping her wings, so her feet gently touched the ground, before her wings completely hid behind her back.

"Yeah, well I acted like an idiot when that camera came up to us. Why didn't I consider the fact that the local news would want to cover us?" She sat down, her back against a nearby tree.

"You might want to stand back up, because we have to run a little errand," I looked at her apologetically. She stood up and her wings spread out to their full length, showing alarm. "We didn't get our books back.

I watched as the realization hit her. She slowly slumped down. "Follow me." She kicked off the ground, and I followed her.

When we got to the house, she grabbed my arm tightly. "Hey! Let go. You're freakishly strong for-"

She gave me the death stare. "For a what?"

"Calm down, little birdie. I was going to say, 'you're freakishly strong for your height'. Put that glare away." She shoved me into the doorm letting go of me. I rubbed my arm, "Ow. Do you intend on waking the entire neighborhood?" She just smiled at me and pointed towards a window above us. I couldn't see anything until she casually leaned against one arm on the house, sending a few pulses of light on the house. "What-" I looked at the window, eyeing the two small heads pocking from the window. "Oh." She took off her smile and flew to the higher window. The two bodies moved out of the way as- she entered the room. She stuck her head out, and put her hands on the window sill, giving me light to see.

"Come on," I leapt into the window, and saw light coming from her feet, spreading across the entire bedroom. I saw two beds, both had matching sheets. Julianne was hugging Uil, who seemed uncomfortable. I could see the light in Uil's eyes, bouncing around. She gave me a look like she wanted me to help her. "What is going on? Say something." She gave me a look of annoyance.

"Fine. I'm just not really in a chatty mood." She looked towards Fred. "Do you guys have our books?" He nodded and took out the book about owls and dolphins from under his pillow. He handed them to me, then detached his sister from my partner.

"Thanks, Fred. Well, we better get going." I began walking out the window, when I felt a small tap on my back. I turned around and saw Julianne. I scooped her up and spun her around before taking her in a large hug. I set the giggling girl back down on the floor, and realized Uil had already left. Fred was waving to her from the inside of the window. "Bye, Fred." I held up the books. "Thanks! I hope we'll see you once more," I waved to him and hopped out the window, landing on my feet next to Uil. I handed her the book on owls.

"Hey, what's going on?" She had a straight face.

"What do you mean?"

"Why aren't you as talkative?"

She shrugged. "No reason. I'm fine. Are you alright?" I nodded.

"Yes, but-"

"Then let's go. We have our books. I'll see you same place, same time tomorrow, okay? At the park." She flew off, and I was tempted to go after her. She didn't seem fine. I thought about following her, but decided otherwise. I began hopping, then gliding, hopping, gliding, copy and paste, copy and paste, until I finally reached my house. I peeked through the window and saw my brother was asleep in his bed, his stomach slowly rising, then falling, he was thin, as was the rest of the rest of his siblings. I crawled through the window and untransformed quietly. I touched my copy gently, which made it evaporate into my wrist like water. I crawled into my bed, ready for Friday to come.

I was just about to slip into a deep sleep when I heard Jo's phone ping next to him on the small table between our beds. I ignored it at first, but it came a second time. I took his phone and sat upright on my bed, reading his messages.

Erin: I don't know what to say, I just think it's a bad idea.

Me: I understand, but I am a curious person! I want to know who Delfini is. He looks kind a familiar.

Erin: I get it, but don't you think you should respect his privacy?

Erin: Please, don't be mad.

Me: I'm not, I just thought you of all people would understand.

Erin: What do you mean?

Me: You always chase after the solution to a problem, which I support.

Me: But whenever I want to do something, you always shoot me down! You're selfish and you don't care about anyone else besides yourself.

Erin: Jo, I really hope you don't actually believe that. Is everything alright at home? You seem a bit emotional. (Read at 10:15)

I looked at the top of the screen. It was 1:30. I looked at the most recent messages sent from her.

Erin: I understand you are upset, and you're right, I can be selfish.

Erin: I know you have gotten my messages. Please answer me.

Erin: It is just a silly thing, don't blow it out of proportions.

I began typing in response to her.

Me: Hey, this is Soel. George is asleep. Why don't you want him to chase after what he believes?

Erin: He wants to figure out a superhero's identity. It is meant to be kept a secret. Please, let your brother and I work this out on our own. It is between us, which means it doesn't involve you in any way.

Me: He is my brother, and I understand your point. For you, you think this is just because of this situation. But it isn't. You are ambitious, and that much is clear. He supports you through and through, even at home. If either me or Becky says anything against you, he will stand up for you in a heartbeat.

Me: He cares about you, and he just wants you to feel the same about him.

Erin: I do!

Me: No you don't, you probably can't because you are such a coward. He has told us all about how you are a push-over, and you let other people walk right over you, so why would it be different for him? It isn' just this one thing for him, it is what it represents. If you can't support him and trust him, how do you expect him to do the same for you?

Erin: I'm glad he talks so much to you all about my faults. You're right though, so is he. I'm sorry.

Me: It's too late.

Erin: I
