Chapter 4 (Soel)
I had to get her out of her shell, she was too anti-people. I could tell she was often lonely, and she hadn't actually smiled since I first saw her, she was so serious.
"I don't know what you should call me, just stick with 'Owl' so we can get on our way." She walked through the hole in the wall, her owl was still hiding, and I sent Nico to hang out with her (just guessing based on the bird's feathers. This dolphin brain is amazing!) I followed Owl into a bright, white, hallway surrounded by doors. Before I could understand anything, I felt an impulse to turn right, which I could see only one door, and beyond is a dead end. On the left there are two doors, and a fork where we can either turn right or continue going straight. I began walking to the one door on the right side of us, but I felt a harsh wind throw me against the dead end. I turned around while laying on the ground, and I could see Owl curled inwards just a bit so she was hunched. Her arms were in an 'x' covering the top of her head, her face facing the ground. Owl's wings were outstretched and I knew immediately what she had done.
She put her arms down, and I could feel anger beginning to rise. Her head rose, and her facial expressions made all anger melt away. She was scared, and apologetic. She walked a few steps towards me, then stoped when she was some five feet away. She didn't look close to tears, only saddened and regretful. I stood up, and I saw her face change, almost as if there had been a default button pressed, her mouth was no longer frowning, but in a line, with eyes that burned with determination.
"Are you alright, Delfini?" I nodded, shocked that she could change her emotions so quickly, and her voice sounded dry. "Good, I just need you to tell me before you walk off." She reminded me of a stern mother who was very upset with a child. Unlike I had ever seen her, she had her spine straight, and her shoulders were tense, but she had a hint of confidence that I had never seen.
"I think we should go," I titled my head towards the door she was standing in front of. "In there." She nodded and was about to knock, then decided instead to slowly open the door, which luckily wasn't creaky. She opened the door and squinted, before running inside without warning. I was about to grab her arm, but her wings had begun flapping and as she zoomed in, I zoomed backwards. My back slammed against the wall, quickly getting to my feet. I ran into the room to see Owl kneeling down on one knee, untying a young girl from a chair. She saw me, and I glanced towards the young boy sitting in the light, towards the other side of the room. I heard her deep voice, obviously having a hard time concentrating on two different things.
"Get, the, uh, the boy! Now!" It was like a snap from my trance. I dashed over to the boy.
"Hey, hey, it's aright. I'll get you out." I looked over my shoulder and realized although the young girl was speaking, Owl payed her no attention. She had her tongue sticking out, set just near her nose, and her eyes were darting all around the rope, concentrating. I looked to the boy, who was clearly anxious. I knelt down, and looked him in the eyes. I thought about my original voice, with the cracks and all. Ah, the glories of puberty. When I spoke next, my voice was back to normal.
"Hey, look at me." He looked no older than ten or so. His eyes met mine, and I gave him a reassuring look. "What's your name?"
"Fred. What's yours?"
Soel. I fought the urge to reveal my actual name, I'm not sure why, but I had a feeling that nobody should know. "Delfini, it's greek for dolphin." I felt shocked, I didn't know that. I began untying the rope that was connecting the boy by the waist and arms to the chair he was sitting on.
"Come on, Julianne." I looked at Owl, and she had the girl on her back, just between her wings. She was walking towards me, Julianne giggling. She was about nine, the same as Fred. They looked like twins, she had short, blond hair and green eyes with pale skin. Fred looked exactly the same. I turned back to the young kid, still tied down.
"Is she your twin?"
Fred nodded, smiling stiffly. "Yeah, she's my identical twin, but I'm older than her by ten minutes." I fought back a smile, but lost. I saw a brown hands jerk on the rope, causing it to rip a clean cut. It was Owl's claws, I mean, talons. I picked up the boy, and being much taller than him, he sat on my back fin, holding on to my neck. It hurt, but it was bearable. I turned to Owl, who had a stern expression in her face. Julianne was playing with her ears that poked out of her head.
"Let's go." She jumped off the ground and her wings took the weight, making her look graceful.
"Jump, Delfini! And follow Uil!" I looked at the boy.
"Is that her name?"
"Yeah! It's her super hero name, just like on the book! Now jump and spread your arms!" I obeyed, trusting the boy, not sure what harm it could do. When I opened my arms, I expected to fall face first on the ground, but I was instead surprised: I was gliding.
"What the-" I heard the boy cough, not so subtly. I turned and smiled at Fred. "Ha, ha, very funny. I was going to say heck." I think we both knew very well that I wasn't going to say heck.
"Whatever you say. Kick your legs, and if you want to go faster, put them together and move them from right to left." I looked ahead, the feet of Owl, Uil, and moved my legs from left to right, and found myself gliding next to the girls. Fred had let go of my neck, and was holding tightly onto my fin.
"Hey, Uil." Julianne waved at me, full of smiles, but her ride just looked at me. We were following the wall, hoping to find a fire exit.
"What?" Her wings generated so much harsh wind, I was having trouble gliding straight. I dropped to the ground and jumped once again.
"That is your super hero name. I think that is why we are-"
"Stop!"
I was taken aback.
"He's right! You have both been sent here because there is a bad guy coming to Toledo." Julianne said, her grin having left her.
"No, we are, well I know I am, only thirteen! Why would anyone want kids flying around saving the day?"
Uil was looking at the ground, clearly deep in thought. The young girl looked at me, wanting support. I sighed, but gave in. I stepped on the ground, and let the boy down. "Stay there, you hear me?" Fred nodded, and I jumped, grabbing the girl from Uil.
"What are you doing?"
I set Julianne down, and she ran to her brother. Uil stopped flying, and gracefully landed on the ground. she began walking towards Julianne, but I blocked her, sensing frustration from her. I put my hands up. "You have to calm down, and listen to the-"
She pointed to them with her entire hand. "They are kids! They don't know what they are talking about! I don't know about you, but I know I am not good material for a person expected to save our town!" She was yelling, and I looked in her eyes, dark brown, emotionless, her voice was irritated.
"They are-" I was speaking to her gently, patiently.
"I don't care! I am clumsy, irresponsible, and I don't have time! Who does? They kidnapped us-"
"I know that, but now we might not have a choice. Just because it seem hard-"
"This isn't just about-" Her mouth was moving, but no sound was coming out. Water began flooding her eyes. She hit her arm hard, and she was about to do it a second time, but I grabbed both her forearms.
"Stop this!" She looked behind me, and I could feel her body get heavier, her face softening. I grabbed her under her arms, and we both went to the ground. I looked behind me and saw the siblings staring at us. I stood up, and knelt in front of the two.
"Hey, it's okay. She is just a bit stressed. She'll be alright." They looked terrified, and I opened my arms to give them both a hug, which they accepted. I point to a corner near by. "Uil and I are going to go over there, alright? Stay close." They both nodded, and I walked off to the teenage girl, who was messing with her fingers. I helped her up, and we walked away from Julianne and Fred.
"I'm sorry." She was avoiding eye contact. Her voice sounded plain once again.
"No, don't do that."
She looked at me, her eyes red and puffy, her mask was damp. "Do what?"
I crossed my arms, and I noticed her shoulders were high, and her head was low, her wings were going inward. "You aren't letting yourself feel anything. You are hiding your emotions. You just had a panic attack!" I looked at the two, and they were conversing among themselves. I leaned in closer to Uil. "You were self harming. In front of those young children. You have to-"
"You're right, I freaked out, so I just need to work on controling my emotions better." She began walking away, but I grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
"Do you let your emotions out when your alone?"
"Why does it matter?"
"Answer the stupid question."
She looked at my feet. "I don't feel comf-"
"I don't care. Do you let yourself feel at any moment? Do you even know how you feel?"
"NO! Okay?" She ripped her arm out of my grip and took a step back. "I don't, and I like it like that!" She walked away and got on her arms and knees, allowing the girl to get back on her back.
"Are you alright, Uil?"
She smiled, and nodded as she stood up. "Yeah, I'm fine. Are you alright?"
"Yeah."
The lights suddenly shut off, and I realized I wasn't with Fred. I felt something grab my waist, and realized it was the little boy hugging me. I picked him up so he was sitting on my side.
"Uil, you need to touch the wall!" Juliannes voice reported. I saw two bright lights turn my way.
"What? Why?" The lights were centered with blackness. Uil's eyes.
"Just do it!" I suddenly saw a burst of light beam on the wall, beginning from a brown feathered hand, spreading to the entire hallway. I reach for her, not being able to see, and I felt a hand grab my wrist. From that hand, what felt like a bunch of energy spread to my entire body. I could see a line pass over my eyes, and I felt my hair rise gently before falling back down. It happened a second time, this time I could see rings of light in Uil's eyes. She had one hand on the wall, and one on my arm. Julianne was laughing, and I was speechless, the feeling was indescribable, sure I could try, but it was like a breath of fresh air.
"Hey, do you want to do something cool as well?"
It was Fred. "Always, what you got for me?" He whispered something in my ear, and I couldn't help but smile. I shut my eyes, and thought about what I needed to do my trick. I opened my eyes and saw a large water bubble hovering above Uil's head.
"Do it."
"Do wha-" Uil looked above her head right when the water bubble dropped. It surprised her, and she ended up slipping, struggling to stand up. She had let go of my arm, and was struggling to stand. The water began to come back together into a seat, and she was struggling. The water held her down surprisingly well. The younger girl was near her, a ball of light. She rolled over to Uil and whispered something in her ear.
"No, I don't want to encourage him. Fine." Suddenly, she disappeared. I heard something shake, and I knew she had gone invisible.
"Oh, shoot." Fred had genuine fear in his voice. "I thought we weren't going to-" He was lifted off my waist, and he ran to wrestle with his sister who was still floating on the water.
"Oops!" I heard Uil's voice, and I felt something knock my feet forward, and I slipped on the few drops of water. I landed on my back, about to sit up, when I felt what seemed like a foot, put just a bit of pressure on my stomach. "Did you slip?" I heard a small laugh.
"Nope." I looked at the water and gently made it set Julianne on the ground before sending it to knock against the figure on me.
I heard a gasp, as we were both swept up into the water. I was blinded by a sudden burst of bright light, and before I knew it I was on my back, water all around me. I could see Uil, surrounded by light, her hands on my shoulders, the rest of her body was above my head, I could only see her face and shoulders. I pulled her under her arms and threw her into the air, where I had a water bubble waiting. However, this one let her head stick out the top while the rest of her was trapped in the water. She was standing, and the bright light around her had gotten brighter. She was soaking wet, her wings floating uselessly with the the shawl thing and the skirt cape. I could see she was trying to get out, but she couldn't. I stood up and began walking towards her. She looked at me, and winked. I then realized she wasn't looking at me, and I felt something jump on my back. The water burst, and the lights turned back on. I looked over my shoulder and saw a giggling Julianne was on my fin. I looked to Uil and saw she was coughing. I set Julianne down, and sent her back to Fred who had been watching from a safe distance. I was completely dry, as was the two siblings. The only person who showed any sign of water was Uil, which only showed I was successful.
I lifted her up and pat her back. She was looking at the ground. For a second I thought I saw a smile. Before I could figure out why, she swept my feet from underneath me with her leg. She was standing, while I was sitting. She held out her hand, and helped me up.
"Thanks, that was fun. But now I can't fly, and we still have no idea how to get out of here."
"Well, we know," Uil and I looked at the boy. "But we were told not to let you out until you have learned everything. It is the only way we can go home." Uil walked towards the boy and spoke directly to him, holding his shoulders.
"That's alright. Just tell us what we need to know, then we will get you both home." She sounded sympathetic, yet I wasn't sure if she was. She was good at hiding her emotions, I felt bad for her. But I don't know for sure, so I decided to keep quiet.
"Okay, well, you both have been chosen for superheroes so you can protect Toledo from Shadowan. They haven't really told us anything about him, just that he is a bad guy and we need you both to save us."
Julianne continued. "Delfini, you can control water, see into the past, and the possibilities of the future."
"Can he see what is going to definitively happen?" Uil was standing next to me now. I turned to her.
"I think it is just one of the infinite possibilities, simply because time is a fragile thing and-"
"You watch The Flash, don't you?" I nodded. I was thankful I wasn't alone. I wanted to hug her, but I knew that just because she recognized a reference from a television show with superheroes.
"Anyways, as I was saying, you can see the future or the past, and Uil," Her ears perked up. "You can sense what is happening in the present. You can also control land animals and plants, while the same is true for Delfini, only with aqua stuff and without the present reading thing." Geez. This girl sounds so smart, she must have had to memorize this.
"Not only that, but Uil, you can cast light, or become a light source, you can see in the dark, you can fly, and you can turn invisible." Fred smiled, looking pleased with himself.
"What about me? Can I do anything else?"
"Yep! You can control the weather, duplicate yourself, you can breathe under water, and you can see the vibrations of stuff."
"Quick question," Uil had her hand raised. She turned to me and spread her arms like she was inviting me to shoot her, or like she wanted a bear hug. "May you please dry me off? It is getting cold." I thought about the water getting sucked out of her clothes-feathers, and her hair. I opened my hands and I could see the water going from her to my hands. Eventually the water stopped coming, and I realized just how pretty she was, her long hair had been place in front of her shoulders because of the wind I generated.
"Great." She set her arms down and sat down, her legs crossed like a pretzel, and her wings were gently flapping, just hardly getting her off the ground. "Okay, now that I am dry," she was facing the two kids. "Are we going to be able to change back into our regular selves?"
Julianne nodded. "Yeah, but you should do your best not to know each other's identities, so try-"
I put my hand up, and I sat on a chair of water, completely happy. "Don't worry, guys, I am sure we will be fine. I have seen enough Marvel movies to learn from their mistakes."
Note from the Author:
I know the story is fast moving, but I will try around Chapter Seven to slow it down. If you want, I can start putting spoilers, but I won't if it isn't wanted. I have decided on a name, but if anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what to write, but if there are any ideas for the story like couples, friendships, drama, let me know and I might put it in the story if I see it.
