Chapter 19: Belittled by Bryce

Even though running hurt my body, I didn't slow down until I was turning the corner onto my street. A sigh of relief escaped from my lips when I saw that Bryce was still gone; a part of me had been panicking that I was going to find that he had come back early. Bolting into the house, I hurriedly began working on my chores. My chores basically resulted in every inch of the house getting scrubbed until it sparkled; I had to vacuum, dust, do the dishes, take out the trash, and a few other things that Bryce instructed me to do. By the time I was done, it was nearly quarter till eight. I had just plopped down onto my bed and my eyes were shut for a moment of seconds, when I heard a car pull into the driveway. Enjoying my last few seconds of solitude, I remained on my bed until I heard the front door open and Bryce shout,
"Brat, get your ass down here right now," I quickly jumped to my feet and bolted out of my room.
"What do you need," I asked before I was even all the way down the steps.
"Did you complete all of your chores?" He asked me as his eyes scanned the hallways.
"Yes," I answered. His eyes narrowed and I knew that he planned to check everything and look for any flaw that he could find.
"Did the roofing company come today." This was where I needed to start thinking cautiously, one wrong answer could cost me.
"They came this morning," I said in response. He stared at me as if he was expecting me to say more but I didn't know what else needed to be said.
"Well did the fix everything?" Bryce asked.
"Um I believe so," he snorted at my answer.
"You believe so," Bryce mocked me. "Gosh it's not like I'm asking you a hard question. It's a yes or no question. They either did their job or they didn't; are you seriously so stupid that you can't even tell me whether they did their job." I stayed silent while he ranted, I knew better than to interrupt him. Only when I was sure he was finished, did I speak again.
"I misspoke, I meant to say that they did finish their job." Bryce's next question took me by surprise.
"Was the traitor here?" I knew if I said no and he later found out that I lied, then I would be in major trouble so I told the truth.
   "Yes." I said curtly.
"Did you talk with him?" Bryce questioned harshly. He took a few steps so he was right in front of me and was staring down at me.
"Only about formalities," I answered. Bryce rolled his eyes.
"Did he ask you any questions that weren't work related?" I shook my head with hope that he would believe me. Bryce looked down at me suspiciously. For a second I thought he was going to say more but then our doorbell rang. "We'll finish this conversation later. Go freshen up so you don't look totally hideous and then bring some beers into the living room for me and our guests." Not willing to anger him by arguing or asking questions, I quickly hurried back up the steps as Bryce made his way to the door. Out of sight of the visitors or Bryce, I stayed near the top of the steps so I would be able to hear who the guests were. When Bryce opened the front door, I could hear two new voices.
"Hey Bryce how you been?" The first speaker said.
"Long time no see man," the second voice added. "Thanks for having us over." It was at this moment that I knew my life was over. The two people who had managed to figure out how Ponyboy got away the other day, which shocked me since they were normally quite stupid, were in my house and I needed to serve them and my abusive brother beer. There was no solution where this would end well for me. No matter what I said, Bryce would believe Max and Jacob over me. One thing for sure, I was in for the beating of my life.
