Chapter 17: The gang (playfully) mocks us
When the Curtis house got into sight, Johnny let go of my hand and motioned for me to follow him. We both sped up so we were no longer trailing behind the rest of the gang.
"You lovebirds done making kissy faces at each other?" Steve asked jokingly.
"Hell none of us were watching em," Two said with a chuckle. "For all we know they were doin' much more than makin' kissy faces at each other." I had to stand on my tiptoes to reach, but I still managed to whack Two-Bit in the back of his head.
"Get your mind outta the gutter for once would ya." I said to the older, but much more childish, male. Darry, who had been relatively quiet since the kissing incident, chose this moment to speak up. Turning so he was walking backwards, he made eye contact with both me and Johnny.
"If you two take it any farther than kissin', I'll have to skin both of you." Even though his tone and expression told me that he was completely serious, I couldn't stop myself from laughing.
"Would ya relax Superman," I said as I tried to compose myself. "Johnny and I ain't stupid; we're only 15 and 16 years old. We know the consequences and neither of us wanna deal with em, right Johnny." I looked over at Johnny who nodded as he watched me with an amused expression. "Sides we're not a couple so I don't see what the big fuss is about." A person sniggered from behind me.
"Not yet," turning around I saw that the culprit was Soda. Instead of flipping out like he probably expected me to, I just shrugged instead and said,
"None of us can predict the future so who knows." Based off of his facial expression, I could tell that my statement shocked him. By now we were in front of the house. "Last one in gets the smallest piece of cake," I shouted as I sprinted past the gate and into the unlocked house.
