When it comes to your relationship, right when things are looking up, they slide back down. Whether it's a fight, cheating or just getting in trouble. If you need each other the most then you just break off ties with each other. That's the beginning of a fall out.

We've never been the smartest

You guys never think. Worse than Ponyboy. Darry scolds you guys to be more careful and the rest of the gang shames you for it. They say you'll end up in the cooler for the rest of your life and that may be true, but at least you're trying.
