Darry Imagine
I wrote this a few weeks ago and then completely forgot about it. It's sad, but I like it. Enjoy!
In the hospital bed she laid, her eyes closed. Her head pounded painfully, and her heart slowly, steadily in her chest. She couldn't feel it, and it was questionable on whether she was even breathing. But she definitely was, or she wouldn't have felt this bad. Slowly, she became conscious enough to open her eyes.
The lights around her, although dimmed, seemed too bright. She squinted, and brought her hands to her head. A face appeared above her, right in her line of vision. And then two others around the first. They all looked familiar, three boys, one in his 20s, and two in their teens. She couldn't place who they were.
"Is she okay?" The youngest one asked. The sound of a voice hurt her head more, as well as scared her. She jumped, and there was suddenly a high pitched ringing in her ears.
"I'm not even sure she can hear us," the eldest admitted. His voice calmed her a bit, although she couldn't figure out why. He was handsome.
"I... I can," she said, although it hurt to get the words out. All of the boys' eyes widened. The oldest one, looking relieved, hugged her, and kissed her cheek. The middle one had tears in his eyes, and the youngest stood in the background, almost awkwardly.
"Thank god... Do you know why you're here?" The oldest one asked. She searched her brain, thinking as hard as she could, but couldn't place anything. She had no clue who she was, where she was, why she was there, or who the boys were. She tried to shake her head, but couldn't move enough to.
"No. Where-where are we?" Her voice was soft and raspy, and she wished she didn't have to talk, but she was confused and wanted answers.
"There was an accident," the middle boy spoke. The girls heart skipped a beat.
"Soda, let me explain," the oldest one spoke. Then more gently to the girl, "There was an accident." She smiled as best as she could, trying to laugh at the way he repeated Soda. And then again, she wracked her brain. She didn't remember an accident. Hell, not that she could remember her name, but she didn't even remember her own family, parents for that matter.
"I don't remember it," she whispered, every word making her wince. The oldest boy frowned.
"Is she ready to hear about it?" Soda asked. The oldest one shrugged, and looked to her.
"Who are you?" She asked, wanting to know that more.
"Y-you don't remember us?" The youngest one asked. His voice cracked, tears streaming down his face. She shook her head.
"I... I'm sorry," she muttered, instantly feeling bad. Guilty even. The eldest one shook his head.
"No, Y/N, it's okay. We understand," he said. Y/N. She thought about it. It sounded nice. Familiar. That was who she was.
"Y/N," she repeated. The middle one smiled, the oldest nodded, a light shining in his eyes.
"Who are you guys?" She asked again. His smile faded. So did the oldest one. All of the hope in his eyes seemed to disappear
"I'm Darry Curtis. This is Soda," he pointed to the middle boy, "and Ponyboy." That was the youngest. Neither of the names sounded familiar, except Darry.
"Darrel," she spoke. And he smiled. Wide.
"You always call me that," he said. Her eyes widened. And then closed. It hurt.
"Darrel," she repeated. He came a step closer, taking her hand. She didn't fight. She knew that name. And she knew his hand. It felt familiar. It felt like home.
"What happened?" She demanded, losing her voice more with each word. She wasn't even sure they heard her, but she wanted to know about this accident. What happened? How did it happen? Why couldn't she remember anything, and why did her head hurt this bad?
"The accident," Darry reminded.
"Accident?" She muttered. Why wouldn't they just tell her what she wanted to know already?
"I was driving," Darry spoke. She couldn't read the look on his face. Anger? Sadness? Regret? Soda puts a hand on his shoulder.
"We were at a red light and..." his voice broke. But steadied himself and kept talking like it didn't happen. All she could hear was a few of his words. "Accident, my fault, sorry, air bag..." There was a flash, a bright light right before her eyes, and she saw the truck. She saw the crash. She felt Darry grabbing her hand, and she heard the scream, louder than anything before. She heard a crunch, and then she felt nothing.
When she came to, the first thing she said was, "I remember." The brothers standing in front of her didn't have time to ask her what happened, or why she screamed. Darry grabbed her hand and didn't let go as he traced the wedding ring on her hand. The diamond was missing. He didn't have the heart to tell her that they were driving to the church, about to get married, when the accident happened. It was two months ago now.
"We never got married, did we?" She spoke softly and slowly, regretting her words as soon as they left her mouth. Darry shook his head, sadness evident in his eyes. She noticed the bags under his eyes, and wondered how many sleepless nights he'd sleep in the uncomfortable looking chair by her hospital bed, waiting for her to wake up.
She sat up for the first time in a while. And pulled him close. He sat down next to her.
"Are we going to soon?" She asked, leaning her head on his shoulder. He smiled. She remembered the moment he proposed to her, the exact second she said yes. Suddenly, she remembered exactly how she felt when he asked, and how happy he looked when she said yes.
"As soon as you're out, baby," he whispered. She kissed him. And she felt good. She knew who she was, she knew who they were. She wasn't scared anymore. Her head had stopped hurting.
"Doctor says it'll only be a few more days," he said. Feeling relieved, she noticed that Darry's brothers had left.
"Will you stay with me?" She asked. He nodded, and laid down in the bed with her, his arm around her.
"As long as you want."
