Lieutenant

Diana's P.O.V

We have been traveling from village to village and Dougal did the massive Gaelic speech every time, sometimes causing people to tear up at the sight of Jamie's back. Jamie looked ticked off each time as if he struggled to not rip Dougals head off. He didn't do anything because he loved Scotland more than himself just like the rest of the MacKenzie men. They gathered money and Jamie humiliated himself for nothing and that's the knowledge only me and Claire shared.

Claire usually made up an excuse to why she wouldn't attend the village meetings. Dougal wanted to keep a close eye on her so he gave Angus the job of watching her. Angus and Claire didn't seem to like each other and it was understandable since he wasn't really friendly, always the first one to try and embarrass us but at the same time I owe him.. after all he did try and save my life when I was to be hanged . I on the other hand stayed. You would think I was just too lazy to go off and wander about but no. I was watching the audience trying to catch an odd person out. I didn't think the Jacobites would pull through but any kind of help they need I will offer and right now I'm trying to help them even if they don't know about it.

And so here we are at a yet another late village meeting. There was some chatter amongst the people until Dougal stepped into the middle of the room and cleared his throat. There was silence and some people kept their eyes down trying to be respectful which really looked like they were scared but I know they weren't . The MacKenzie men were welcomed warmly as if they were good old friends.

As Dougal spoke I analyzed everybody in the room. As always most of them looked frail and pale.

"Handsome." I told myself meeting one man's eyes with mine. I picked up some whiskey I was given by Will as a sorry gift and motioned for the man to meet me outside. He give me a short nod and started to silently slip away .

The cold air hit me and I shivered but then got used to the temperature just as the man emerged from the building. His eyes held the same spark as before and his hair looked like it hasn't been touched since we met . Effortless beauty I think to myself scoffing internally nevertheless plastering a smile on my face.

"M'Lady." He bows with a smile and then looks back up at me.

" I never got your name." I said studying him, trying to figure out how much he already knew.

"Lieutenant Foster." He said looking like he was going to say something next but forbid the words from leaving his mouth. Me being observant knew he had many questions about what was happening.

"So what exactly is going on miss. I don't know Gaelic that well but I managed to understand something here and there but it weren't words that proved that the Scottish are conspiring against the King. I don't expect you to know the language but if you do please explain. " He said sounding demanding, meaning business.

" I do know the language since I've lived with them for quite a while now and I catch onto things real fast, I'm a fast learner. The man inside is just putting on a show, you know they need some time to goof around after a long day of collecting rent and traveling. " I tried to reassure him by lying.

" But they look so angry and the poor man with the scarred back.... Is there something that your hiding miss. " He asked getting too close for my liking , towering over me trying to somehow intimidate me.

" The poor lad is made fun of by the drunk one and so the people are slightly baffled. He sits and does nothing because if he did he'd be out of line... After all the drunk is in charge of the whole journey and is the Lord's brother. Angering him wouldn't end up nicely. " I answered sharply. My hands formed fists and my nails dug into my palms. I felt the warmth of blood as it trickled down my palm and fell to the ground tainting it crimson red. Foster was oblivious to how angry I was for on the outside I looked calm and collected.

"I'm sorry for accusing you." He choked out with wide eyes realising what he did. He looked so surprised and angered by his own actions. He was obviously disappointed with himself and I could read him like an open book.

"What are you doing here lieutenant?" I asked keeping my anger at bay. I was getting good at controlling myself lately, for example when Will angered me I didn't react violently.

" I can't tell, for all I know you would tell them." He replied. He looked at me softly and apologetically. I understood where he was coming from, I also understood why he was here.

"Well about the town where you wanted to bring me, how far is it?" I asked now calm. He looked at me with scrunched up eyebrows and his smile widened.

"You want to come with me?" He asked unsure if what I said I actually said.

"Not yet, got some things I have to deal with along the way. I will go there once I'm finished." I said and watched as his smile fell and he began to look concerned and for what reason? I don't know . That boys emotions change so fast.

"What kind of things?" He asked slowly.

"That's for me to know and you to not ask about again." I said with a sickly sweet smile patting him on his shoulder.

"These savages cannot be trusted, miss I fear for you." Ah there it is, that's why he's so worried.

"Do not worry I'm strong enough to take on ten of them." I said seriously but he took it as a joke and laughed .... Sexist pig. I'm a very moody person in general so you can guess what I feel towards him again.. Anger.

"By the way lieutenant." I said once his laughter died down. "One of those savages was flogged because of the King for no reason whatsoever.... So please think about who the real savage is."and with that I walked back into the building not looking back because I'm dramatic like that.

I insulted the King oops, looks like I'll get a back whooping. Oh damn I forgot... I never got the name of the town dammit.
