The Forthcoming & the Menacingly Experienced | By Jaunty

As Titan strode down the sidewalk from his dorm towards the early morning workout class, he passed two figures. One a superhero teen, and the other a teenage girl who was not a hero, and technically not supposed to be in the Hero Academy, but she was popular among many of the superheroes. Titan acknowledged them both with a nod of his head and a quick warm smile.

Ariel watched Titan as he strode past them with a quick stride. She turned her head to Scar beside her, his arm linked with hers.

"Scar, Titan is a very popular hero, right?" She asked gesturing at Titans retreating form.

"Oh, I don't know," Scar said with scorn in his voice, "many people think so, but I think he's rather overrated. He's just stuck up because he's the first and best hero here."

"He doesn't seem all that undesirable," she noted furrowing her brow, "he seems a very agreeable person."
Scar didn't answer. Instead he picked a small violet beside the pathway and gave it to Ariel.

"I can't wait till high school is over and I can come here and become a superhero too." She mused, staring at the architectural genius of the builders projected in the campus buildings.

"What power do think you would choose to train for?" Inquired Scar.

"I don't know for sure, I have quite a few ideas bouncing around in my head, but I do love the power you chose; it's so original and unstoppable." She smiled looking into his brown eyes. He returned it and looked off across the campus.

Scar steered them both towards the entrance of the academy campus. Ariel reached up and plucked a leaf from a overhanging branch and rubbed it in between her fingers as they passed. She brushed a lock of her red-highlighted, dark brown hair from her eyes.
As they strolled out of the campus, a small teenager, perched on the edge of a fountain caught their attention.
He stood up as they passed by his seat.

"Hello, my name is Cantor," the teen said, "I'm a huge fan of your powers, Scar, I am honored to—"
"Shut up." Scar said bluntly, and Cantors mouth snapped shut. He turned towards Ariel instead.
"Hello Miss Ariel, I am honored by your presence also." He said dipping his head. She laughed lightly.
"I knew a few people know my name, but I didn't know I was a celebrity." She said smiling.

"Well, I know the names of almost every person who walks into the campus." He hesitated, and then proceeded, "so miss Ariel, will you be joining the Hero Academy as well?"

"Yes, I believe I will once I finish school." She replied politely, slowly scooting away.
Cantor didn't take the hint, and continued;
"Would you mind if I c—"

"I said shut up you retard!" Scar cut in, towering over him. Cantor landed with a jolt into a sitting position on the fountain edge. "This is your only warning. Next time you're getting a pummeling to keep your trap closed." Scar narrowed his eyes, then he shoved Cantor backwards into the fountain and turned on his heel to join Ariel.

"Scar!" Ariel chastised in a hoarse whisper. "That was a very mean thing to do, he was just curious."

"He's annoying. I'm disgusted that you care so much about a street urchin!"

Ariel shut her mouth and looked back over her shoulder at the teen who was in the process of climbing out of the fountain.

A long silence elapsed as they walked down the sidewalk. Then Scar's phone began buzzing in his pocket. He slid it out of his jeans and swiped it open, a red notification circle was positioned over the hero-exclusive Hero Academy app on his home screen. The time it took for the app to load was enough for Ariel to forget about the Cantor teen, and to become solely interested in the academy notification.
"Single Scourge alert" read the notification,
"Superhero 'Scar' has been recruited to terminate the Scourge.
East end of city, in between highway 776 and highway 238."
It then began to describe the characteristics and estimated weaknesses of the reptilian Scourge.

"Well," said Scar, slipping his phone back in his pocket, "duty calls. Would you like to come and see me at my job?" He flashed her a simper, and bounded over to his silver GT, with Ariel right behind him.

Scar drifted around the intersection of the road and unceremoniously parked his car across two parking spots. He flipped out of the door and rolled to a crouching position. Ariel clambered up onto the roof of the Mustang to watch as Scar gripped a flattened car and lifted it over his head. His ribcage in his chest opened up revealing a large cavity in his body. He pressed the car bumper as well as he could in his chest, and his opened ribcage began to break the metal down and push the whole car into his chest. When Ariel had first seen Scar's superpower, she had been revolted, that is, until the cause became clear: a transformation began in Scar's body after the car was inside of him. His fingers were busted open to reveal huge metal fingers underneath. His jaw became the bumper of the car, and metal, makeshift saw blades began spinning on his giant wrists. He was now about twelve feet tall, and at least half metal and objects that he was cramming into his chest.

He had little time however, for with a great roar, the smaller Scourge spotted him and leapt over a small establishment and charged him. It was about the size of a jet, but Scar was now about the size of a couple train cars stacked on each other. Just as the monster was upon him, Scar used the suspension of two different cars which had taken the place of his legs, to spring over the head of the Scourge. A long sharp piece of metal shot out of his cyborg wrist and sliced along the monster's back. It wheeled around and caught him a blow with one of its flailing claws.
Scar smashed into a skyscraper, but immediately gripped the side of to give himself thrust. He rebounded off of the opposite building and landed on the Scourge, knocking it to the ground.
It shot up from the ground, and seemed to be choking on something. It hacked for a few seconds as Scar sprinted towards it, and then it threw up a large gooey green mass that splatted onto the ground about a hundred feet from Ariel. The Scourge fled out of sight with Scar close behind, as Ariel warily gazed at the mass of goop that was moving about.
Then, to Ariel's horror, the mass ripped open to reveal a smaller beetle Scourge which coughed for a second, and then ran full tilt at her.
