CHAPTER THREE
It's been a couple of week since Hayden and Remington first started talking. Countless times Remington tried to shut him out. No matter how much he tried to Hayden still wanted to get to know him and Remington seemed to like that about him. This is the fourth time he wanted to skip class to talk to Hayden, they talked about nearly anything. They started to become friends within those two weeks. Even if Remington tried to deny it, he knew so as well. He just had to come to terms with the fact that he couldn't shut everyone out.
Remington led Hayden down the hall trying to dodge people as they neared the exit. As soon as they saw nobody they left the building. Remington opens his pack of cigarettes and looks up at Hayden.
"You want one?" He asks.
"Oh, um sure." Hayden says. He seemed quite hesitant but he agreed.
"You know you don't have to feel pressured to have one, right?" Remington asks a small laugh escaping him.
"I don't feel pressured, certainly not by you, Mr. Tough Guy," Hayden says sarcastically, "you offered and I'll gladly accept."
Remington hands him it and grabs a lighter out of his pocket. He puts a cigarette it in his mouth and lights it up before handing the lighter to Hayden.
"I should have just grabbed my bag at this point," Remington sighs.
"You wanna leave that bad?" Hayden asks.
"I wish I could, but I can't."
"How come?" Hayden asks blowing smoke towards the ground.
"My brother, he's a senior here so it's nearly impossible to just leave without him figuring out." Remington explains, "he's caught me a doing it a lot last year I think I learned I shouldn't even try to by now."
"But you still ditch class?" Hayden asks.
"Not always, I just didn't know how else to actually talk to you without people making a big deal out of it. Although if we do get caught skipping it'd give people a good laugh," Remington chuckles, "imagine the new kid being caught smoking behind the school with the biggest dick in sophomore year."
"You're okay with people calling you that type of stuff?" Hayden asks.
"Fuck, people can call me whatever they want, as long as they don't actually mess with me. They're all just a bunch of bastards anyway."
"So you're going to assume the worst about everyone?"
"Not everyone," Remington sighs glancing at Hayden, "I don't think you're too bad."
"You're actually okay with me?" Hayden asks.
"Am I not supposed to be? I mean yes, I'm a jerk and I hate a lot of people but you're not as bad as a lot of them," Remington says.
"I called you a dick and an idiot earlier," Hayden laughs.
"You said I seem like one, not that I am one. But seriously, don't make me regret saying that. As far as I'm concerned you're the only person who's even given me a chance. I could do anything to make you regret that," Remington threatens.
"Of course you can," Hayden says sarcastically.
"I'm serious Hayden," Remington says, "I'm either okay with you or you're on my shitlist, and you don't want to be there."
Hayden laughs quietly before sitting down against the wall. He looks up at Remington a small smile on his face.
"So um, quick question, why'd you even date Marisa?" Hayden asks.
"Well, you've obviously never had sex with her. She may be a possessive bitch with a sour attitude but she was good in be-"
"Just stop talking!" Hayden yells disgusted.
Remington laughs, "I actually enjoy spending time with you."
"Oh really?" Hayden asks.
"I mean it's easy to annoy you," Remington teases.
"I could easily just leave," Hayden says laughing quietly.
"You really want to make me regret liking you," Remington sighs.
"No- I-"
Remingtons looks at Hayden trying not to laugh at how worried he had gotten. Hayden looks down a small smile on his face when he realized Remington was only joking.
"You literally froze I- I'm sorry I shouldn't be laughing," Remington says nearly out of breath.
"Well at least we're having fun, right?" Hayden asks a small laugh escaping him.
"Yeah, I actually enjoy talking to you, I thought I was going to tell you to leave me alone. But you're pretty okay, so I'm kind of glad I didn't."
"See I'm not so bad," Hayden jokes.
"Yeah yeah," Remington sighs.
"Hey, I know that it's probably weird hanging out with me. I probably seem a bit too nosy. I shouldn't have tried to ask a lot of the questions I asked you."
"It's fine," Remington sighs. He looks into Hayden's eyes for a moment, the sun reflected in them causing a yellow glow in his blue eyes.
"You're okay, right?"
"I- I guess," Remington says looking away.
"If you're not doing okay you can talk to me, my purpose is not to ruin whatever reputation you have here, it's to help you," Hayden says, "but if you don't want to talk about this I get it, I know we just met so I don't want to intrude or anything. I'm sorry I'm talking too much not aren't I. God-"
"It's okay, but thank you for the offer," Remington says sitting down next to him, "do you maybe want to stop by my house after school, I think my brothers would be glad to see I'm talking to people again."
"Oh, sure."
"Your parents are okay with it right?" Remington asks.
"My aunt, and yeah, she won't be home and I'm sure she'll be glad I'm making friends anyway," Hayden says.
"Oh, I'm sorry are your parents..."
"Yeah, they're dead... but I'm okay. I'm going to be okay." Hayden sighs dropping the cigarette on the ground in front of him.
"It's about time for lunch, you want to go inside soon?" Remington asks.
"Yeah, I'll be there in a moment."
