CHAPTER ONE

"Don't get involved with him Hayden, he could rip you apart if you mess with him, or even worse, he'll use you. Look, you're new, and I think we both know you're pretty fragile. So just stay away from him and he'll stay away from you," Marisa says sternly.

"Who is he?" Hayden asks, curiosity filled him as he studied the mysterious boy ahead of them.

"His name is Remington."

When Remington stared back at him it sent chills down his spine. His dark brown eyes complimented his pale skin, his black hair just made his skin seem even lighter than it already was. Hayden didn't see him as a very threatening person but obviously other people sure thought he was. Sure he looked mildly intimidating, but it was only his clothing choice. Other than that he looked like a normal rebellious teenager.

Whatever he thought about him was likely wrong. After all, he didn't get his reputation just by looking bad, he obviously had something else about him, something other people knew that he didn't.

"Hayden look away from him you idiot," Marisa says snapping him back into reality.

"What's so bad about him?" He asks.

"I told you he'd rip you apart if you mess with him, he doesn't exactly looks like he can but he will, so please don't mess with him or else you're a lost cause."

"A lost cause?" Hayden asks a small laugh escaping him.

"I'm being serious about him Hayden!" She whines dragging him into the school, "it's your second day here and I'm not planning on making it your last!"

"He's probably not as bad as he seems, after all, there has to be a reason why he's like this," He says walking with her to her locker.

"Nothing can just drive a person to just become an emotionless dick."

"Anything could Marisa," Hayden says standing by her locker.

"Like what?" She asks.

"Anything bad enough to hurt him, I'm not saying that it's right for him to be like that or that it was right for him to do whatever he did wrong, but you have to think about it from his perspective," Hayden says.

"You're going to defend him? He could hurt you, no matter how much you seem to think you understand him he's just different," She grabs her library book from her bag.

"He just seems like he needs help, he already scared everyone else away. So why should I join them? Why should I be scared if I don't know why I am?"

"Do what you want Hayden, but if you get hurt remember that I warned you." She sighs.

Hayden goes to his locker seeing only the legs of the person next to him. He struggled with him combination for a minute before finally opening his locker. When he looked beside him he saw it was Remington next to him. He wondered why he didn't notice him the day before. Maybe he was gone that day or maybe because he just didn't particularly stand out to Hayden. He saw Remington like he was just like everyone else.

"Um, you're Remington, right?" Hayden asks shutting his locker.

"I assume you've heard about me already," Remington says clearly not surprised.

His tone was nearly monotone, it didn't scare Hayden, it just worried him. Remington sighs taking his sunglasses off he top of his head. He sets them on the shelf in his locker.

"Why are people scared to talk to you?"

He glances at Hayden, "why shouldn't they be?"

"Hayden!" Marisa yells from behind him.

He looks behind him seeing Marisa. He glanced at Remington real quick before walking over to her. She looked like she was ready to start saying something but she stopped herself.

"Don't even Marisa, I know I talked to Remington, but he doesn't seem too bad." Hayden says.

"Him? Not too bad? You have to be kidding!" She laughs.

He sighs, "well I have to get to first period so I'll see you later."

The minute he walked into his first class everyone fell silent. It took one glance behind him to realize why. Remington was in this class as well. It appalled him that everyone quieted down just because Remington walked in. He knew Remington was someone that everyone was afraid of but it still surprised him.

He watched Remington sit down in the back of the room. He didn't think he should sit next to him especially after what he had asked him a few moments ago. He sat on the other side of the room wondering who this mystery boy really is.

Once that class ended he quickly left the room, going straight to his locker. He didn't know if Remington would be upset and he didn't want to wait and see.

"Hayden," someone says from behind him.

He turned around expecting to see Marisa or one of her friends, but he didn't. He saw Remington, his eyes immediately landing on his. He had no idea what Remington wanted and he didn't know if he should be worried that something could be wrong.

"Oh, Remington-I- um, how do you even know my name?"

"Your friend isn't exactly the most quiet person," he sighs quietly, "you know, you really shouldn't be trying to talk to me."

"I shouldn't as in you don't want me to, or as in you'll hurt me if I do?" Hayden asks a small laugh escaping him.

Remington shakes his head clearly starting to get annoyed, "do you want to wait and see?"

"I just want to-"

"Look, whatever you want to say or whatever you want to know about me, it's useless asking it's none of your fucking business," he says harshly, "and if I were you, I would stay the fuck away. I'm not going to tell you anything."

Remington begins to walk away pushing his way to the other side of the school. Hayden didn't know if he should follow him or go to his next class. Something told him that the mystery of Remington Leith would be far more complicated than he thought.
