Chapter 8

Hannelore’s POV.

I’m busy painting when I hear the door slam shut with a loud bang. I put my paintbrush away and walk to the foyer to see who it is, because I don’t expect my father or Tule and mom to be home already.

But it must be either one of them, or a very stupid burglar.

Luckily it isn’t the burglar, although with the looks Tule’s giving me, I probably would have had a bigger chance at surviving the burglar.

Seriously, if looks could kill I’d be six feet under the ground already.

Seeing the state Tule’s in, it’s probably not wise to tease her, or talk to her in general, but of course I can’t resist. “Someone looks happy today.” I say sarcastically with a smirk on my face. “What happened? Didn’t your love declaration turn out the way you thought it would?” I ask with mocked concern.

“Shut up Hannelore.” she snaps at me.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” I say cheerfully.

Tule gives me one of her death glares and walks to her room angrily.

“That wasn’t necessary Hannelore, you didn’t have to rub it in.” she says disapprovingly.

“What if you were in her position?”

“I’m sure she would have done the same, she probably would’ve rubbed it in even more.” I say truthfully.

Mom sighs and shakes her head in disapproval. “Why can’t you two just get along?” she says more to herself than to me, but I still reply.

“Maybe because she’s a bitch?” I suggest.

“Hannelore! I don’t want to hear such vulgar langue coming out of your mouth!”

“It’s the truth though…” I reply.

“Look, I know you’ll never be close, and I don’t even expect you to. But can you at least act civil around each other?” she pleads.

“I’ll try. But I expect Tule to do the same. One of her stupid remarks and I’m done.” I warn her.

“That sounds reasonable. Why don’t you start with apologizing to her.” she suggests.

I sigh and shrug “Fine.”

I decide to just get it over with and walk straight to her room. I knock two times and come in, even though Tule yelled that I had to go away.

“What part of ‘go away’ don’t you understand?!” Tule snarls.

She lies in bed with her back turned to me. I hear her sniff, probably from crying. I know it’s ridiculous, but I kind of feel sorry for her.

I take a step closer and begin apologizing. “I’m sorry Tule, I –‘’

“Ohh please, you’re not sorry.” she snorts and sits up. “I’m sure you couldn’t be any happier. But if you think this means you have a chance to get with him, you’re wrong.”

“I know you must find it hard to believe, but I really don’t enjoy seeing you like this. And of course I don’t have a change with him; you’ll make sure it will never work out.” I say bitterly.

“That, and you just don’t deserve him.” she says coolly.

“Look Tule, I came here to apologize, not to argue with you.” I say annoyed.

“Well then you can better leave, because I don’t need your apology and all we ever do is argue with each other.”

“You’re right, I better leave you alone. Can I get you anything before I go? Tissues… a rope maybe?” I ask her sweetly.

“You think you’re so smart, but you’re stupid if you believe that I care about him, or about your ‘smart’ remarks.” she says coldly.

“It would be a lot more convincing if you weren’t crying.” I state.

“Just go!” she orders me. She lies down again and turns her back to me.

Since I was already about to leave, I obey her this time, but I really hate being told what to do, especially by her.

The days that followed were boring and quiet, but I guess that’s better than fighting all the time.

Tule and I just stayed as far away from each other and ignored each other when we’re forced to be in the same room.

Today however, was, and is a busy day. We’ve just arrived to watch the interviews of the tributes.

Mom has agreed to meet up with Ms. Hayes and Wade, so we’re waiting in the foyer for them to arrive. As always, dad is busy working, so it’s just my mom, Tule and I.

Tule looks very nervous and is bighting her perfectly manicured and pink painted nails.

“Honey, you’re ruining your nails.” mom states.

Tule immediately drops her hands. “I know, I’m just a little nervous. Do we have to sit with them?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to?” Tule asks.

“Yes Tule.” mom sighs “Look, I know you’d rather avoid him after what’s happened, but Wade is a good guy, and he’s done nothing wrong.” she reasons.

“I know that, but it will be awkward.” Tule insists.

“It’s not up for discussion.” mom says and looks in the distance and waves extravagantly. “Here they are!” she squeals. “Tule, I expect you to behave decently.” she tells her, and walks towards Ms. Hayes and a very good looking Wade.

“I’m warning you Hannelore, if you’re a smart girl, you stay away from him.” she threatens when mom is out of hearing range.

I snort. “Or what? You’re going to run to mommy?”

“I was thinking more about making your life a living hell.” she replies.

“Even more than you already do now? I don’t think that’s even possible.” I snort.

“Do you want to find out?” she dares me.

“Why not.” I say with a sweet smile, not even slightly worried.

She narrows her eyes at me, and then shifts from being her bitchy self, to the fake sweetheart when mom, Madam Hayes and Wade catch up with us.

We both great them politely. Wade looks good, his blond hair is neatly combed backwards and he wears khaki pants with a nice light pink blouse with rolled up sleeves. There’s a hint of stubble on his masculine jawline and a beautiful smile on his face when he looks at me.

“Okay, let’s go.” mom squeals and walks off chatting excitedly with Madam Hayes, leaving the three of us on our own. After a few moments of awkwardness, we quickly follow them.

Luckily I wear comfortable, with studs encrusted pink flats instead of the usual ten inches heels, so walking isn’t such a struggle, but I still have trouble keeping up with mom and Madam Hayes.

I was forced to sit next to Tule, but I also sat next to Wade, so that made it better.

I must say that Caesar Flickerman – this year surprisingly dressed all in blue instead of pink- did a great job at interviewing the tributes; he really did his best to make the tributes look good.

Three minutes aren’t very long, but long enough for the crowd to get an idea of how the tributes are but most of the tributes didn’t really stick with me.

The careers seemed cruel to me- which is strange coming from a girl who watches them slaughter each other- it’s just that they seem to enjoy the games as much as the people from the Capitol do, maybe even more.

Apart from the careers, the other tributes seemed okay; the little girl from District Eleven looked so innocent in that short blue dress. Katniss or ‘the girl on fire’ looked beautiful in her red dress that looked to be on fire when she twirled around. The love declaration from the boy of District Twelve, Peeta, was sweet and heartbreaking. How terrible it must be, to be in the arena with the one you love, knowing only one will make it.

All in all it was not even that bad, and I still have the rest of the night to look forward to, if Tule won´t ruin it for me that is.

“That wasn’t too bad right?” Wade says smiling at me once the show is over.

“Are you kidding me? I had to sit next to Tule for over half an hour!” I say dramatically.

“And next to me, so that must have been worth it right?” he says and winks at me.

Yes I think, but of course I don’t admit that

“I’m not sure; we’re talking about Tule after all.” I say teasingly.

“That’s true.” he laughs.

I’m quite curious as to know what happened between Tule and Wade, but I –of course- haven’t asked Tule about it, and I feel kind of hesitant to ask Wade; I don’t want to seem to nosy.

And it’s none of my business anyway.

“By the way, you’re riding with me.” he informs me.

I look at him questioningly “Why?”

It sounds as if I don’t want to, though in fact it’s exactly the opposite.

“Because your mother rides with us, so you do too.” he explains.

I smile at him. “Okay. I guess that means you’re going to the party too?”

“Yup.” he answers. “Shall we go? I think we´ll be leaving any moment now.”

“Sure.” I say as I start walking to the exit.

Wade quickly walks next to me, and together we walk to the car. The others are already there when we arrive, and as expected Tule’s eyes shoot daggers at me. I ignore it and sit down at the site of the window and Wade quickly sits next to me. I don’t really understand why we’re driving with them, but I can’t say I mind.
