I sigh in frustration at one of my calculus problems inwardly condemning the person who invented it. Lord, please forgive me. I lift my head off the palm of my hand and start writing down facts that I think are important in my notebook. My head is now throbbing at this massive headache I have and I start to rub my temples.
"Hey Marsipan," I look up from the textbook and watch as Garret slides into the chair on the opposite side of the table. His big, square, glasses almost falling off his face and I have to giggle a bit. "Are you ever going to stop calling me that?" I stop rubbing my temples and look at him trying to put on my annoyed face.
"Probably not. Just because I know how much you love me calling you that. Anyway, I came to tell you that I have good news and bad news."
I sigh, "Oh really, and does this news have anything to do with a party of some sort?" Reflecting back on the last time Garret told me he had good news and bad news would probably be the last time I would want to hear what he has to say. "No, it has something to do with a road trip." He squeals like a girl in his seat and claps his hands excitedly.
I roll my eyes and look back at my text book, resting my head in my palm again. "First can I hear you say Garret Rocks!" People shushed him and he sank down in the chair pretending to be humiliated. "You are going to get me in trouble."
I lean over the table and whisper violently at him. "Come on Marsipan I know you can do it , all you have to say is Garret Rocks!" He said it even louder this time and slammed his hand on the table, people shushed him again.
Now it's my turn to sink down in my chair in real embarrassment. "One, two, three, Garret Rocks!" A guy that was walking behind him slams his book closed. "Really man come on!" He storms off upset and I laugh inwardly really hard making me snort, a reaction only Garret can make me do. "Um, excuse me sir, people come here for silence ok, thank you," Garret said as the guy walked off, then Garret turns back around to face me. "Can you believe these people? Lord have mercy on their souls."
He smiles and I laugh even harder. Once I finally calm down I say, "Can you tell me the bad news first please?"
"Alright fine," he rolls his eyes and leans over the table, "If you want to go on a road trip with us to Washington D.C. you have to ask your parents."
"And what's the good news?"
"Danny, me, my cousin Sam, and five other guests are going on a road trip." he squealed again and this time the librarian came over. She has the traditional librarian bun on the top of her head with two pencils sticking out, a pair of Harry Potter glasses hanging off the tip of her nose, and a jean skirt with a brown chocolate sweater.
She looks like she's in her early sixties. "If you kids can't keep on your inside voices I'm going to have to ask you to leave. Do you understand?" She stared at Garret the whole time. He just nods looking terrified of her.
She walks off pushing a book return cart with her and almost immediately Garret says, "Wow she reminded me of my late grandmother Edna May. She frightened me so much as a kid." I grin a bit remembering some of the stories of how he talked about his grandmother threatning to punish him by beating him up with her cane. Or about that one time he told me that she forced him to go grocery shopping with her and if he didn't she threatened to snap a twig off a tree and beat him with that too.
Judging by all the stories of his grandmother Edna May, she was not fun in Garret's childhood.
"At least you have a grandma that you can remember." I sat up right in my chair and folded my arms on the table edge infront of me. I start thinking about those times when I was a little girl just thinking that my two grandmas were the best in the world. Now finding out that those people in my life were strangers all along made me wonder what else have they been hiding from?
