Chapter 4:

I got up off my floor, more like jumped up, and ran downstairs. Danny was in the doorway, car keys hanging outside of his khaki pants. He looked at me weird but I didn't care. I was just focused on finding that picture.

"What are you doing?" He asked as I heard him close the door and walk into the living room. I didn't answer him. I just kept looking through beige cubbies that my mom had kept most of my childhood pictures in.

Should I even call her my mother? I thought to myself. Ofcourse Mara, after all she has been the one taking care of you all your life.

More doubts rushed into my mind like a flood which made me look through pictures more violently. With no luck I threw a cubbie across the room and it hit something hollow causing it to crash on the ground.

"What was that?" I said quietly. Danny walked over to the spot where I threw the cubbie and I got up to walk over too.

I ended up looking at the black shelving unit now on the ground, cracked in half. A bunch of old, small books scattered in the floor. Some pages flew out as well.

"Aren't these the books that your mom never let you touch when you were a kid?" He said as he knelt down on a knee and started looking at book covers. "Yea. I never knew why though." I knelt down next to him and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear.

"What exactly are you looking for anyway?" He asked as he looked at me. I sat down and extended my legs out. He took the same position. I started explaining to him about the woman I saw at the hospital and how I thought I saw her in a picture a long time ago.

I told him how my mom got really freaked out and took the picture away from me. "I never saw that picture again and I never knew why she got so freaked out."

"Wait are thinking that your related to some random person who looks just like you?"

"Well put it that way and it sounds ridiculous." I rolled my eyes at him.

"Cause it is. Hiw many times have we been at the mall together an we've seen people that look like me?"

"Danny this is different and serious. You joked about those people and you never thought to pursue that person."

I reached for another book but he grabbed my hand.

"Mara, are you thinking you might be adopted?" He looked at me confused and worried like I had come down with the swine flu.

"There's only one way to find out. Now will you help me find that picture or not." he sighed and thought about it for a second.

"Fine." Started looking through but I'm not sure why though. And then when I was just about to give up I saw it. A piece of a picture slightly sticking out from the middle of a book and shining in the sunlight.

I reached for the book and pulled out the picture.

I looked at it and couldn't believe that I saw this picture when I was eleven. "I think I found it." I said quietly shocked at the sight.
