A Battle of Time

Chat Noir couldn't move. He couldn't even scream when Time Turner's foot connected with his lady's stomach and sent her flying before she slammed into a building and collapsed onto the ground.

It was as if he was stuck in a syrupy sap. He could move, technically, but even trying to think about it caused beads of sweat to collect at his hairline. Trying to move seemed to suck away his energy, and there were better ways than to resist so futilely.

Chat watched his lady, willing her to get up. The speed of his racing mind could only be matched by the insistent drumming of his heart and the roar of blood in his ears. She lay against the brick and pavement, as still as a limp doll. Chat feared the worst.

But she did move. A twitch at first, barely detectable, but Chat caught it. Then, she stirred, her arms and legs shaking as she hoisted herself upwards and stood to face Time Tuner once more, unsteady on her feet.

It seemed like a good time to use her Lucky Charm, but she didn't and Chat, despite all his frustration, knew why. It was too early in the battle, and they couldn't risk it.

Instead, Ladybug hurtled herself towards Time Turner, her face twisted in pain as they sparred. Despite her injuries, Ladybug seemed to be besting the villain, and Chat watched her with a swell of pride.

His eyes followed their every move as Ladybug and Time Turner circled each other in a deadly dance. Ladybug flung her yo-yo and just before it latched onto Time Turner's wrist, Chat dropped from the air and hit the ground with a graceless thud.

In his place, Ladybug now stood frozen, her eyebrows still pinched in deep concentration, her legs still bent as if trying to shove her momentum forwards. Chat stood dizzily, gripping his baton as he readied himself to fight the villain.

He can only freeze one human at a time, he realized. It seemed that it took quite a bit of concentration to perform a freeze as well, as there was a faint sheen of sweat on Time Turner's face.

Chat lunged at Time Turner, his baton flinging wildly as Time Turner dodged his every hit. Despite all that, it seemed that like Ladybug, Chat was gaining the upperhand.

The air turned cold and the hairs on Chat's neck stood, a shiver passing through his body. He became faintly aware of a presence behind him and turned. Even Time Turner seemed too shell-shocked to take advantage of Chat's distraction.

Hawkmoth stood on the middle of the road, leaning gracefully against his cane. He looked just like he had the last time Chat and Ladybug had seen him years ago, donning his suit of bright violet, and the shining silver mask that covered his face except for his eyes.

Chat shuddered just looking at them. They were as blue and icy as the waters of the arctic, without an ounce of warmth inside. They regarded him carefully as if sizing him up, and Chat decided that he would rather not allow Hawkmoth to observe him.

How am I going to fight both of them at once? Chat wondered dizzily as he shot towards Hawkmoth. Luckily, he didn't have to find out as there was a soft gasp behind him.

Time Tuner's hold on Ladybug had failed.

Chat barely had the time to appreciate her yell as she dove for Time Turner before he narrowly dodged a blow from Hawkmoth's cane. The four of them sparred on the streets while the citizens of Paris cowered in their homes.

"Finally lost your paw-tience?" Chat Noir taunted as he somersaulted over Hawkmoth.

Snarling, Hawkmoth lunged at him once more and tackled Chat to the ground. Chat grunted at the impact as they went skidding down the street. His hand burned as blood dripped from his palm, the flesh broken by the slide over the cement.

Wincing, Chat's hand closed into a fist and he threw it at Hawkmoth, hearing the satisfying crunch when his hand connected with the supervillain's face. Leaping off Chat, Hawkmoth growled, his eyes flaring with an icy rage.

Grinning, Chat jumped back up, his blood still singing from his tiny victory. The joy of his triumph was dashed when he heard a strangled cry behind him just as Hawkmoth lunged. Chat ducked under Hawkmoth's cane as something flew past him.

Not just anything. Ladybug, in her suit of red and black, her body limp like a puppet cut off from its strings. Her pigtails had long fallen off, and her raven hair covered her bruised and bloodied face. Chat barely had the time to blink as his eyes followed her, a scream caught in his throat as she slammed into the side of a car so hard that it shuddered.

Ladybug dropped onto the pavement as if already dead, her limbs spread at awkward angles, her hair plastered to her face, already seeming so pale and bloodless. Chat could barely make out the faint trail of blood that had escaped the corner of her lips and was carving its way down the side of her chin before dropping onto the ground, soaked up by the pavement.

His vision turned red as he rounded on Hawkmoth. He could see the supervillain barking out orders to the akumatized villain, but he could not hear the words past the buzz of rage in his ears. It didn't matter. Chat knew what Hawkmoth wanted and he was not going to get it.

Snarling, Chat leapt towards Hawkmoth, his body shuddering with rage. The scream that tore from his mouth was something he barely recognized. It sounded animalistic, primal, made barely human by the sharp shredding sensation in his chest.

"CATACLYSM," Chat roared before he even knew what he was doing. His hand moved of its own accord, leaving his mind behind.

What he was about to do seemed to dawn on Chat Noir and Hawkmoth at the exact same moment. Eyes widening, and perhaps betraying any emotion Hawkmoth felt for the first time, the supervillain's hand shot up to the brooch in the middle of his tie and ripped it off. The butterfly miraculous plummeted towards the ground and hit it with a faint clink.

A violet flash of light surrounded Hawkmoth, and when it died down, Gabriel Agreste stood in his place.

Chat Noir barely had the time to think, father, before pulling away and cataclysming a nearby car instead. Behind the two, Time Turner dropped to the ground, having returned to his civillian form of a young man in an ebony suit of mourning, no longer powered by the butterfly miraculous.

Chest heaving, Chat stumbled several steps back as he watched Gabriel Agreste in open-mouth horror. A murmur had already started to fill the streets. No doubt this would soon make headlines. The famous Gabriel Agreste, most iconic fashion designer in Paris, turned out to be Hawkmoth.

Not taking his eyes off his father, Chat bent down, picking up the butterfly miraculous and pocketing it. It was time to return it to its guardian. The Guardian. Ladybug. Marinette.

Sirens were starting to blare through the streets, the air filling with flashing red and blue. Hawkmoth wouldn't be able to escape today. Not when he was powerless and under the disdainful eye of all of Paris.

Chat turned, finally tearing his gaze off his father. Why didn't he recognize it before? The same ice-blue eyes that had watched him grow up. How did he not recognize them before? But that wasn't what was important at the moment.

Ladybug lay on the ground, exactly as she had been when she collasped. Gingerly, Chat picked up and cradled her against him. She was cold.

Like a corpse, Chat couldn't help but think. No, stop it.

She wasn't dead yet. There was a faint tickle of a shallow breath against his neck, but Chat feared that if he didn't hurry, she would die in him arms. Taking out his baton, Chat turned to the police officers behind him. "I'll leave him to you," he said, nodding at his father. It was a miracle his voice didn't shake.

The officers nodded and Chat took off, his dying lady in his arms. He needed to get her to the hopsital. He needed to get there fast.
