Chapter 32. Keeping Derek afloat..
"Oh come on! Is that thing even a teenager? I wanna see a birth certificate!" Coach yelled as another one of our players was shoved to the ground. The game had started five minutes ago, and I was already going out of my mind watching Allison's grandfather, who's name is Gerard by the way, sitting in the bleachers. I need his freaking office keys.
We had a plan, actually. And since Scott wasn't the one that came up with it- the plan should work, since I came up with it. If Allison could get the keys from Gerard's coat pocket without him seeing, I can walk past her and she could easily just hand the keys off to me. Once I had the keys I would give Stiles the signal, and then we could go and get into the office.
I glanced over to Allison and she was giving me a look, I noticed she was wearing Gerard's large jacket- success! I quickly made my way over to her, managing to trip over some idiot who left a lacrosse stick just laying around, more than likely it was Greenberg. She slipped the keys into my hands and I quickly hid them in my jacket pocket. Stiles was watching me intently the entire time- so I really didn't need to give him a signal.
He stood from the bench and made his way over to me, making sure the coach didn't realize that he was leaving, as we were making our way past the bleachers I noticed that my mom was talking to a kid with the camera- that's the same kid from Allison's Aunt's funeral, Matt. Why is he talking to my mom? I'll have to ask her about it later.
Once we got into the school and the keys successfully unlocked the office, Stiles started digging around through the drawers. I was once again assigned to keep watch while standing out in the hallway, at least if Gerard did show up, I had a chance to get away... Stiles... not so much.
"Hey Stiles-" A hand was clamped over my mouth before I could finish my sentence and my eyes widened when I saw Erica standing right in front of me, oh for the love of all that is holy. What the hell is she doing here?
She cocked her head to the side with a smirk, "Hello Kasey."
✢
"Okay, ow. Yes, that is- ouch!" I complained as Erica drug Stiles and I by our ours to the pools, after she literally came out of nowhere and kidnapped me- she made Stiles follow along or she threatened to snap my neck... needless to say, he listened.
When we got into the pools, Derek was standing there playing around with a basketball- "And why am I not surprised that you are here," I muttered as Erica released my boyfriend and I, so she could go and stand by Derek's side.
Derek smiled, "Stiles, Kasey."
"Derek." We responded at the same time- it was a bit weird.
He smirked, "What did you see at the mechanic's garage?"
"Uh, several violations of the EPA that I am seriously considering reporting." Stiles responded in his usual sarcastic way. I wasn't surprised that he didn't want to tell Derek about the new creature roaming around in Beacon Hills. Derek wasn't exactly a friend of ours.
Derek dug his claws into the basketball and it popped hissing out the air, "Holy god..." Stiles mumbled.
"Let's try that again," Sour wolf repeated.
I sighed, "Alright, the thing was pretty slick looking. Um, skin was dark. Kind of patterned, I think I actually saw scales. Okay? Is that enough- because Stiles has a game to get back to, and my mom is actually waiting on me..."
Derek narrowed his eyes further as he sent me a look telling me that he wanted to know every possible thing that either one of us remember about this creature. Why he cares so much is beyond me, he should at least be happy that the Argent's won't be hunting him down for the time being.
"Um, alright, fine. Eyes. Eyes are, um, yellowish and slitted. Um, it has a lot of teeth- OH and it's got a tail too. Are we good?" Stiles asked after he gave a little bit more description of the creature.
For some reason Derek and Erica had horrified looks on their faces, and it was making me a little uneasy... like, they look like they recognize exactly what we both described, "What? Have you seen it? You have this look on your faces like you know exactly what we're talking about." I said in confusion.
And that's when I heard it- the exact same sound that I heard when Stiles and I were at the mechanic, the hissing. I slowly turned around to see the creature up above us on the platform- oh no. Stiles quickly grabbed my hand and pulled me towards Derek and Erica, this is not good. The creature jumped down and knocked Erica into a wall- she hit with a thud before landing on the ground unconscious, hmm karma is a bitch my friend.
Derek crouched down and growled, but the creature just swung it's scaley and very creepy arm out towards Derek. He spun around, looking on himself for the wound that he had thought the creature gave him- but that's when I saw the thin cut on the back of his neck, oh that's not good.
"Derek your neck!" Stiles yelled quickly, but Derek started to collapse to the ground, for some stupid reason Stiles and I rushed over to him and helped support him as we tried to move him as far away from this lizard looking thing as possible, why is it Stiles and I always wind up having to deal with Derek?
"God you're heavy," I huffed as I tried to keep his limp arm from sliding off of my shoulder- I was entirely too small to be helping him in this way. Derek is freaking huge in comparison to me.
Derek was straining himself, "Where is it? Can you see it? Call Scott."
"Stiles I left my phone with my mom- call him," I said quickly as I glanced around the pools for the creature- where did it go?
My boyfriend fumbled with his phone before it slipped out of his hands, as he bent down to pick it up- he let go of Derek, and since Derek doesn't have any control over his body he fell into the water, and by him falling into the water- he pulled me down with him.
I was so not ready to go under the surface as I sucked in breath and started thrashing around to try and pull Derek up, but he was sinking and he was entirely too heavy. Stiles then dove under and helped me pull him back up, once I got above the water I started coughing manically due to the amount of water I had breathed in.
"Stiles I'm going to freaking kill you!" I shouted as I tried to keep my head above the water, I'm not the worst swimmer in the world- but I'm certainly not the best at it either. And add the fact that I'm helping support an immobile Derek Hale to the equation, equals me having several issues in the water.
Stiles sputtered out some water as he glanced around, "Sorry- I'm sorry. Do you see it anywhere?"
"No- maybe it left?" I coughed as my eyes searched the area of the pools- Erica was still laying on the ground, not moving at all. That's what she gets for doing the exact same thing to Stiles and I last night. Bitch. And to think that I felt bad for her when people were making fun of her, I even followed her to the bathroom to make sure she was okay- and the way she repay's me is by knocking me out and tossing me in a dumpster?
A loud screeching sound filled the pool area, "Maybe not." Derek dead-panned.
"You know what? Now is so not the time for your negativity!" I snapped in annoyance, this is so not how I thought this evening was going to go.
Derek blinked rapidly, "Can we get out of here before I drown?"
"You're worried about drowning?" Stiles asked with a laugh as he flicked his head to the side to get ride of some of the water, "Did you not noticed the thing out there with several rows of razor sharp teeth!"
"Did you notice that I'm paralyzed from the neck down in eight feet of water!" Derek yelled loudly.
"Okay- I'd like to point out, that the only reason we are in this mess is because you have serious issues with socializing." I retorted as I adjusted my hold on Derek so he didn't slip out of my grip, he is so freaking heavy.
Stiles coughed, "Okay. I don't see it, come on."
He started to wade his way towards the edge of the pool where his phone was laying, I struggled to keep my head above water due to the fact that Derek had has thousand pound arm on my neck and he was pushing me down. After tonight is over, I am never getting in another swimming pool for as long as I freaking live.
"Wait wait wait wait! Stop, look." Derek huffed as he tilted his head so his mouth wouldn't go under the surface.
I glanced in the direction that he was looking to see the creature practically stalking the edge of the pool, it's yellow eyes locked on us as it hissed loudly. What even is it? Why would a giant lizard looking creature be in Beacon Hills? I thought the fact that werewolves was weird enough- but now there are actually human sized lizards with sharp claws, very sharp teeth, and the ability to paralyze you from the neck down in seconds...
"What do you think it's waiting for?" Stiles asked in confusion.
"Who knows," I responded as I watched the thing stalk around the edge of the pool slowly, not peeling it's eyes away from us. I don't like the feeling that the look is giving me, he so wants to kill us. Why does he want to kill us? Derek I can understand, but Stiles and I are good people!
✢
Stiles and I had been holding Derek up in the water for about two hours, and I was really starting to lose the strength to hold him above water. The creature in here was circling the pool, not giving up on watching us. Maybe it's just waiting for us to climb out, or to drown. My entire body was sore, and my lungs were on fire at this point, and the idea of just letting Derek go was becoming more and more appealing.
The creature reached it's hand out to touch the water before hissing and backing away from it quickly, "Oh did you see that! I don't think it can swim!" Stiles said quickly.
"Yeah, well in about five minutes he won't be the only one that can't swim." I muttered as I continued my struggle with keeping Derek above the water. Stiles was a bit out of breath as well as he continued to look around the pool- his phone was close, and if we could just grab it we could call Scott for help.
Stiles huffed breathlessly, "Yeah- I don't think I can do this much longer."
"We need to get to the phone," I said as I started to cough again, the chlorine in the water was burning the back of my throat majorly.
Derek started to panic, "NO NO NO NO! Don't even think about it,"
I sighed, "We don't have a choice! Look, will you just trust us for a second?"
"No!" Derek shouted loudly.
My boyfriend shook his head as he spit some water out of his mouth, "We're the ones keeping you alive okay? Have you noticed that?"
"Yeah and when the paralysis wears off, who's going to be able to fight that thing? You two or me?" Derek responded.
"You think that's why we've been holding you up for the past two hours?" I asked breathlessly, I can't hold him up much longer- if one of us doesn't get to the phone it's going to end badly for all three of us.
Derek coughed, "Yes. Look, you don't trust me and I don't trust you. But you two need me to survive."
I glanced at Stiles quickly, "Who can swim faster?"
"You're smaller, I can hold him up better on my own." He said quickly.
I nodded, "Yeah, but I think you can swim faster."
"Kasey if I let go he is going to pull you under," Stiles coughed out as he struggled to keep his head above the water.
"I'll be fine, go." This was our only shot.
Stiles let out a shaky breath before releasing Derek and quickly making his way towards the phone, Derek then all of a sudden became a hell of a lot heavier. His entire body went under as I struggled to pull him to the surface, come on Kasey! I held my breath as I went under and started tugging his body back towards the surface- but for some reason he just kept sinking. Aren't bodies supposed to float? Why the hell is he sinking so damn fast?
My chest was starting to hurt due to how long I have been under but I can't go to the surface without just leaving him down here- and if I do that, I might not be able to get him back up in time before he just starts breathing in the water and he drowns. I felt a familiar pair of hands wrap around my arm and tug me towards the surface, I gasped dramatically as I sucked in the vital air that my lungs needed. Stiles scrambled to help pull Derek back up so he wasn't sinking anymore.
I started coughing as I adjusted my hold on Derek once again, the chlorine was now burning my eyes as I tried to blink away the water. Stiles was coughing as well as he attempted to keep Derek's left side level with his own. "Please tell me that you got him?" Derek asked with a huff.
Stiles responded with silence, oh that's terrible.
✢
"Stiles- I can't hold him up any more..." I breathed out shakily, my arms were starting to go numb and I couldn't hold on to Derek much longer.
He nodded as he started to make his way towards the side of the pool, "I need something to use to hold us up."
We started to swim our way to the side as best as we could, but Derek seemed to be out of it and he was only getting heavier. As Stiles reached up to grab onto the little nob on the side of the pool- his hand slipped and we went under.
I tried to keep my eyes open buy they closed and my grip on Derek was released, I couldn't hold on to him anymore. And just when I thought that I was going to drown in the school's swimming pool- something jerked on the hood of my jacket and pulled me out of the water, throwing me on to the concrete. I couldn't stop coughing up the water that only burned the back of my throat as I tried to sit up. Stiles was laying beside me- coughing as well, and then Derek was trying to move- his paralysis finally wearing off.
The creature hissed loudly and I heard glass shatter, I turned to face the direction in which the noise was coming from to see Scott laying on the ground with shards of glass surrounding him, the creature creeping towards him. Scott picked up a fragment of glass and flashed it at the creature- it got spooked from something and then screeched before jumping up the the ceiling and busting through the skylight.
Scott glanced at us in confusion, before he stood up and walked over to us. Derek was struggling to stand up, and as soon as Stiles could move he had me in his arms. I tried to hug him back, but my arms wouldn't move. Instead I just closed my eyes and rested my head against his chest- we did it. I don't know how we did it, but somehow we always manage to survive this kind of stuff together.
"Is that even a language?" Stiles asked as we glanced at the weird looking words on the laptop screen. After we the whole pool incident, Scott explained the the bestiary was actually on a flashdrive and that specific flashdrive was on the keys that we left in the door of Gerard's office. That's why Scott was at the school in the first place.
My clothes were soaking wet, and I was shivering from the dropping temperature outside. Stiles was shivering as well, whereas the werewolves were all perfectly fine. It must be nice to not get cold like this.
"How are we ever supposed to find out what this thing is?" Scott asked in irritation as he scrolled down the weird pages. Can Gerard even read this?
Derek and Erica approached our car, "It's called a Kanima."
I narrowed my eyes as I crossed my arms over my chest, "Are you telling us that you knew the whole freaking time?"
"No. Only when I saw that it was confused by it's own reflection." Derek stated as he rose an eyebrow at me.
Even after I helped keep his annoying ass above water for over two hours he still has the audacity to be rude to me? You know what? I am so over him and his death threats and mood swings. Why can't he just accept the fact that he is the problem, and we are actually trying to help him. Even though the last thing I want to do is help him- I always wind up doing exactly that.
"It doesn't know what it is..." Scott said slowly.
Derek nodded, "Or who."
"Well what else do you know?" Stiles asked in annoyance.
"Just stories. Rumors." He replied vaguely. That's another thing that gets on my nerves about him, he can't give an answer that ever makes sense. He always has to be super vague and hard to understand.
"So it's like us?" Scott asked in confusion.
He nodded, "It's a shapeshifter, yet. But it's-- it's not right. It's like a..."
"Abomination." Stiles supplied with a sigh, I don't understand how he knew that. Had he been talking about abominations or something earlier?
Derek was silent as he nodded, well this is just great. What exactly does the Kanima want? Like where did it even come from? It wasn't here a week ago? It literally just popped up out of nowhere, and it doesn't make any sense at all.
"Wait- we need to work together on this. Maybe even tell the Argent's." Scott called to Derek as he turned to walk away.
Just at the mention of the name Argent- Derek whipped around to glare at my brother, "You trust them?"
"No one trusts each other. That's the problem. While we're here arguing about who's on who's side, there is something scarier, stronger and faster than any of us and it's killing people! And we still don't even know anything about it!" Scott shouted.
My eyes widened in shock as he screamed at Derek, he usually is the passive aggressive type but he is obviously really upset by this. He wants to stop the Kanima from killing people- he feels like it's his responsibility or something.
Derek smirked, "I know one thing. When I see it again, I'm gonna kill it."
