Chapter One
Six years.
It had been six years since I had visited the house. Specifically, my home in Beacon Hills. That is currently burnt down. Along with eleven of my close family and friends inside it.
The Hale House from what I remembered was glamorous. It was always clean, a member of the Hale family still had their unique place within the house, it was an ordinary house on the outside.
But, like always, every family has a secret. My secret is a little more than most families.
On the outside of the Hale House, it seemed normal. But on the inside, it wasn't normal at all. In fact, it was a house full of werewolves.
Yes, werewolves.
Excluding myself, I'm the different one in my family. You know how there is always that one additional person in your family? Well, that's me.
Instead of inheriting being a werewolf, I got to be a Phoenix. While I was born along with my twin sister (who tragically died in the fire as well), my family was shocked to learn that I was something different to them.
Being a Phoenix is okay, I guess. No, I cannot transform into a bird (that would be wonderful, because then I could fly away from all my problems), but I can manipulate with fire— and even burn people to the crisp if I wanted to.
I can turn myself into fire, which I haven't yet due to being scarred for fires for years. I can heal people with my tears. This sounds very weird, I know, but I find it cold in some sort of way. Oh, I can heal extremely fast, but werewolves could do that anyways. And listen in on people's conversations.
Those are the things I can do that I've learnt, or that Derek Hale, my older brother, who is one of the few family members that survived with me.
He has full custody of me now.
I can feel his eyes lingering on me as we're outside Beacon Hills High School. I honestly had zero intentions of coming back here, until I learnt that my older sister, Laura Hale — another surviving member, came to Beacon Hills and has been out of contact ever since.
"If we're only visiting for a few weeks, why is there any point of me going to high school?" I stall as I sit in Derek's car in the parking lot of Beacon Hills High School. "You know what I mean?"
"Go to school." Derek urges. "Trust me, it's just easier if you stay out of it and go to school, make friends, be a normal kid—"
"I'm far from normal, you know that." I quickly interjected on what he was saying. I studied Derek. Derek may have mastered how to lie in front of a supernatural creature with supernatural hearing, but I know my brother. He is hiding something from me. "What are you hiding from me, Derek?"
He rolled his eyes. Something he always did when he knows I'm right in something. "I'm not lying—"
"I know something is up with you and I'm not leaving this car until you tell me what it is." I folded my arms, slumping in my seat. I might as well get comfortable.
Dead silences.
If there's one thing I know about my brother, is that he's just as stubborn as I am. It's not surprising, really. All Hale's are stubborn.
I heard the bell ring go off in the distances. I smirked. I don't mind missing the first period. Or every period.
"Faya—" I sing just to annoy him. I know he hates my singing and I'm very awful at it. I could see the steam coming out from his ears as he clenched his jaw tightly. "Please, Faya. I'll tell you everything after school."
I shake my head, singing louder. That wasn't a right answer for me. I want to know now. Otherwise, it'll bother me for the rest of the day, and eventually, I'll forget about it and before you know it Derek will have his way on not telling me.
He sighed and I smirked. "Okay. Fine." I instantly stopped singing and he hesitates. "There was a body on our property last night."
"A body?" I questioned, raising an eyebrow. "How was it found? Who was it? Do you recognize them?"
His face softened as soon as I said 'do you recognize them?'. He knows them. "It was Laura, Faya."
My breath hitched as soon as he said that name. I shake my head, not wanting to believe him. "No. It can't be Laura..." My voice is weak. I felt myself tearing up. "Not another sister..."
"I'm sorry, Faya." It looked like Derek was going to cry, too. But he didn't, and I knew he wanted to be strong for me.
I looked out the window towards school. "Was it hunters?" I questioned, looking back at Derek with worry.
Hunters. They're our worst enemies. Typically, the Argents. Those were the motherfuckers that burned down my house, they burnt down my family. Oh, God, I really hope the hunters aren't back in town.
"No, I don't think so," Derek spoke in a stern voice, shaking his head. "Something bigger than that. More dangerous."
"More dangerous than the hunters?" I retort, not believing it. For years on years, the Argents had been trying to kill every single one of our kind and more. Derek replied back with a hum.
My tears had somehow dried out after a few minutes of silences. I suddenly felt sick. This burning sensation was inside of me.
"Woah, Faya, calm down," Derek advises me softly, placing a hand on my back. He winces from my burning touch. That's another thing that sucks about me being me when I get overwhelmed or heat at the moment, I literally become untouchable if you're not supernatural.
"I'm sorry," I whimpered as Derek pulled his hand away from me. I could see his hand healing, though. His eyes flashed bright blue for a second before they disappeared into brown. "What do you see?"
"Your spirit is shown a lot stronger," Derek replied. "A bright gold." I looked down at my lap. "It looks beautiful, Faya."
"You're only saying that cause you're my brother," I told him. If it was anyone else, they would see it as horrifying. "I— I should go to school now."
"Faya—"
I shake my head and opened the door before exiting. I was trying to remain calm. If I stayed calm throughout the day, I should hopefully be able to get through the day without trying to set something on fire.
I made my way through the empty halls. Everyone's in class, so I somehow easily managed to find the administration office.
I stood outside the office and looked down at my hands. I cringed slightly as I placed my hand on the handlebar, it steams— which means I haven't calmed down. I quickly entered and let go of the handlebar and walked over to the desk.
A kind looking lady is sat at the administration office. She had glasses on while other people were working around her.
"Uh, hello." She finally looked up and smiled at me. I read her name tag, Mrs. Reed. "I'm new here..."
"So, you must be one of the two students we have starting today," she looked through her files. "Name, please?"
"Faya Hale."
She nods and found my file. She takes out my time table, locker combination, etc and stretches a handout, offering it to me.
My mouth hung opened to say no I can't, I'll burn it. But I couldn't. She looked at me strangely, probably wondering why I'm not taking it.
Finally, I take the things from her hands and to my surprise, I don't burn it to crisp. So... I'm calm now. Okay, this is a good thing.
But, for safety precautions, I put the papers in my bag. "The Deputy Principal will come to collect you in a short moment. You can take a seat on the chair if you'd like."
I nod briefly, but I don't take a seat. In fact, I stood in the corner with my satchel stuck to my side.
The Deputy Principal had come in, a bright smile on his face. He seemed way too happy to work at a public high school.
He walked over to Mrs. Reed and spoke to her and before you know it, their eyes land on me. "Faya Hale?" The Deputy Principal sounded happy. I nodded. Smiling, he walks over to me. "It's nice to meet you, Faya. If you don't mind, I have another new student waiting outside... You both have first period together."
I nodded, understanding. We exited the administration office and down the hallways. "So, whereabouts are you from, Miss. Hale?" I could see that he knew where I was from.
Not to sound cocky or anything, but I'm pretty sure everyone within Beacon Hills' knew about the Hale Fire.
"I think you know the answer to that."
We entered outside to be met by a female, she had hung up the phone and looked up. She had fair skin, brunette hair, and brown eyes. She was completely the opposite of me.
I had blonde hair and bright green eyes. Even though my family is known for brown hair and brown eyes, I was born completely different and I'm pretty sure it's to do with me being a phoenix.
"Allison Argent."
I froze in my spot as soon as the Deputy Principal had spoken that name. Argent. She is an Argent. The Argent that burnt down my house. That burnt my family. That took my life away from me.
"Make friends." The words that Derek had said flows through my mind.
As my mind tries to think of revenue while we were walking away to where Allison had been sitting, I thought of something even better.
Keep friends close, but your enemies closer.
If I kept my enemy close— which is Allison, I could warn Derek. I could warn anyone who is getting attacked by them. I could save people.
Sure, I won't be actual friends with Allison Argent, but she can think we're friends.
I followed the Deputy Principal into a classroom. Allison looked shy. This is probably her cover-up.
"Class," the class had looked up, all eyeing Allison and I. "This is Allison Argent and Faya Hale. Please do your best to make them feel welcomed."
Acting like I was confident, I stride towards the back where there was a spare seat. I sat in front of a buzz cut hair and a few seats away from me is where Allison sat.
Whispers we heard around the class and I didn't need to have supernatural hearing to even know that they're talking about me.
"Don't you remember?" My hearing focused on the behind me. "Her family died six years ago in the Hale Fire."
I felt eyes burning towards me. My heart twists and turns at the mention of my family. "I wonder what they're doing back."
A/N
FYI I've changed a few things about Faya, but nothing huge :)
