Twilight looked at the yellowing pages of the book and began to read aloud so the others could follow along.
"The Elements of Wilderness are an ancient type of magic said to have been discovered around the founding of Equestria. But how they came to be is still unknown to all of pony-kind." Twilight read aloud. "There are six Elements of Wilderness. The six Elements include fire, water, earth, nature, air, and ice. The elements last known location is the... the..."
"Twilight?" Said Starlight, worried.
"Twilight, what's wrong?" Fluttershy asked.
"This says their last known location was with the Tree of Harmony."
"What?!" Everypony exclaimed. Even Spike yelled out in shock.
"I thought only the Elements of Harmony came from the Tree of Harmony." Fluttershy commented.
"Surely there must be some mistake." Rarity proposed.
"Yeah! I mean, we didn't see anything when we unlocked the chest!" Rainbow Dash brought up.
"Well, we weren't exactly lookin' now were we?" Applejack pointed out.
"I agree with Applejack." Twilight agreed with a nod. "It isn't likely that the book is wrong. Besides, this is the only copy of the book we know of. Not to mention our only source of information. So what choice do we have other than to trust the information?"
"I suppose you're right." Rarity grudgingly agreed, sighing.
"Maybe we missed something?" Twilight offered, thinking back to the last time they had seen the tree.
"Well of course we missed something!" Rainbow Dash exclaimed. "What else could it be?"
"Oh oh!" Pinkie Pie squealed, her hoof shooting up in the air. "I have an idea! Of course, it's just a hunch."
If Twilight knew anything about Pinkie Pie it was that her 'hunches' were usually correct. Along with her mysterious 'Pinkie sense.'
"Tell us." Said Twilight.
"Well, what if it the elements really were with the tree, but we just didn't see them?"
"I'm sorry, I don't think I understand."
"I mean, what if they showed up after we unlocked the chest? What if they were really there all along, but just not in our sight?"
Everypony's jaws dropped, and they sat there, staring at the grinning Pinkie Pie in shock.
"Pinkie, you're a genius!" Twilight Sparkle cried.
The bubbly pink earth pony merely grinned in reply as Twilight began to pace around the cutie map table.
"Hmm... where could the elements be?" Twilight wondered aloud, still pacing. "Gah!"
Then the alicorn sighed, walked back over to her throne, and began to look at the book again.
"I guess we don't have to worry about it right now. I mean, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna did say that the bearers have to sort all this out themselves." Said Twilight, remembering her meeting with the princesses.
"Then what's the point of us knowing about all of this?" Rainbow Dash asked, leaning back in her throne.
"It is our responsibility to put the bearers of the elements on the right track, and to do this, we must know about them as well."
"Don't ya think we should focus on findin' the other ponies first?" Applejack asked.
"Yeah, shouldn't we wait until we know who the bearers are?" Fluttershy agreed.
"I suppose." Said Twilight. "But I'm still not going to stop trying to figure out where they are just in case. We can't afford to waste any time."
"You got it, darling." Said Rarity with a nod. "Does anypony have any ideas of who they could be?"
For a few moments, nothing but silence filled the room and everypony simply stared at each other. Then Rainbow Dash spoke up.
"Well, I know you said that you already think you found the bearer of the air element, but I've been thinking and... I think it could be Soarin." Rainbow Dash suggested.
"Soarin?" Twilight questioned in disbelief.
"Yeah, you know Soarin? The pale blueish white pegasus with a dark blue mane? As in the famous Wonderbolt?" Pinkie Pie babbled on. "That famous group of flyers Rainbow Dash constantly goes on and on-"
"No, I mean, I know who he is. I'm just a bit surprised that's all." Twilight explained.
"Why are you surprised?" Rarity asked. "It's like Pinkie said, he is a Wonderbolt after all."
"Yes, but I'm pretty sure it's Whirlwind." Twilight countered, thinking. "If you heard her cutie mark story, you would agree. Besides, Soarin's cutie mark has nothing to do with the air element. His talent is something completely different."
"But what if Rainbow Dash is right and Whirlwind isn't the air element?" Fluttershy voiced in a worried tone.
"You do have a point there." Twilight admitted. "I suppose it's best to keep our eyes open for different bearers just in case."
"I'll keep an eye on Soarin and anypony else at the Wonderbolt academy." Rainbow Dash told.
"Great."
"And what about Sunset Shimmer?" Fluttershy spoke up.
Twilight Sparkle's eyes widened a bit in shock. She hadn't heard anypony say that name in a while.
"What about her?"
"Well, what if she's the fire element?"
"Hmm... I never thought about her." Twilight mumbled. "I guess it makes sense. She is from Equestria after all... But again her cutie mark isn't related to fire in any way."
"Oh, then I guess not." Fluttershy whispered, shaking her head.
"It's a good idea and we can keep it in mind, but her talent is magic."
"Gee, I wonder what the elements are doin' right now?" Applejack wondered aloud. "I mean, just think, nopony knows what's really goin' on here. Except us, the Princess, and Shining Armor of course."
"Well, all of Equestria can't exactly know about this." Rarity added.
"Yeah, you're right. I reckon they'd be mighty afraid if they knew all this."
Everypony nodded in agreement. The public wasn't ready to know about this. If anypony knew about the return of King Sombra, Equestria would be in an uproar. No, this had to be a private matter, for the good of all of Equestria.
"What else does that book say about the elements?" Starlight Glimmer asked, walking towards Twilight and coming to a stop beside her.
"Well..." Twilight trailed off, turning the page with her magic before she put a hoof on the book and began to read aloud again. "There are many legends told about the Elements of Wilderness. Almost every one of them has a slightly different interpretation of how they look and what they do. However, there are a few things that stay constant."
Twilight's friends and Spike all leaned forward in their thrones. Literally at the edge of their seats, everypony was eager to hear what Twilight was going to read next. Even Starlight was listening intently, looking over Twilight's shoulder to read along with her.
"In every legend told about the elements they always are wielded by six ponies and represent the 'Elements of Equestria,' which includes fire, water, air, nature, earth and ice as the six elements." Twilight continued. "With each legend told, the elements appear to be even more powerful than the last legend let on. Resembling the Elements of Harmony in more ways than one, legends and rumors say that they could even serve in place of them. Even though the Elements of Wilderness are similar to the Elements of Harmony, they are not the same. With all the power that runs through whoever bears them, the possibilities are endless, and possibly dangerous."
It was at that line Twilight stopped reading aloud. The lavender alicorn then looked up from the book to see the others exchanging fearful glances.
Twilight's eyes darted around, looking at each of her friends warily. The book said the elements could be dangerous! She supposed that was to price to pay when the magic of friendship wasn't being used. But the question was: Who would the elements be dangerous to? The ponies they're being used on? Or the bearers themselves? With so much raw power, somepony could get hurt, and they better hope that it won't be one of the bearers or another citizen of Equestria.
AN: I realize the chapter is the is a bit shorter than usual but I feel like a lot happened. Hope everypony likes the chapter!
