Chapter three
Today was the day of the school dance. I decided to walk to school ahead of Monse and Cesar flirting, after that. We went to Ruby's house to make some fajitas. This whole week was full of them flirting and it was disgusting. Jamal and I hadn't talked about the other night in a while. "Attention, students. One last reminder to buy your tickets to tonight's Homecoming Dance. A magical evening full of wonder, excitement, and Romance can be yours for only 10.99." The lady over the PA said as me and Jamal took our seats in chem. How fitting we have an hour to discuss other kinds of chemistry but not our kiss. "However, this is not an opportunity to get freaky. Remember: if you're not responsible, you'll end up with responsibility. So, there will be no tweaking, yiking, getting crunk, lit, or turnt. For all you ladies, dress appropriately. Nobody wants to see your lower butt cheeks. And last but not least: no ID, no entrance. No exceptions." She continued and I looked at Jamal.
"Now, you aren't leaving until you talk to me." I said to him as the bell started to ring.
"I've got an English quiz." He said to me and I pulled him back.
"Listen you've just had chemistry now talk about the kiss." I said to him and he looked away.
"I don't know what came out and I'm sorry." He said to me and he looked at me. He started walking away.
"Don't be sorry. You can do it again tonight." I said to him before walking out in front of him. I wonder how he felt after that. At lunch I was with Monse and Olivia. In the queue.
"And grind. High school dances are the worst." Monse said to us and she was right. Especially at this school.
"Really? Dances in Houston are dope, and great opps to meet great dudes." Olivia said to the two of us.
"What dudes?" I asked her while looking around, I couldn't see any.
"Take a look around. Every hot prospect you see today is gonna be sporting wood tonight. It's not pretty. Or impressive. Dances are basically sex fests." Monse said to us and she was talking the correct things there.
"In a bad way?" Olivia asked the two of us.
"Always in a bad way." I said to her, the amount of stories that came out of them.
"Yes. They can expose you." Monse said to her and I'd seen it happen.
"How?" Olivia asked us.
"You can get roofied or pregnant. And I'm not just talking about getting it in on the dance floor, which happens all the time. I'm talking about slipping on something suspect on the way to the bathroom, and boom, you're immaculately concepted....Like peeing every time you jump. That's what happens after you get prego. Even if you don't keep it." Monse said to us all,
"Goodbye, romance. Hello, trauma." She said to us and I looked at her as I was loafing my tray up.
"Exactly. Now your speaking the correct language." I said to her.
"Plus the DJ they hired is some lame hipster from silver lake...until he basically draped her." Monse said as we were talking about a couple from the fall dance.
"Draped?" Olivia asked, I forgot she didn't know these terms.
"Dance raped. He was all over her. Like a prisoner. He marked like a piece of property so no other guy would touch her. Then she had no other choice but to fall in love. Stockholm syndrome." Monse said before he grabbed the ass and we went outside.
"Tonight could be a game changer." We heard Cesar say as we started walking to our table.
"And our own personal hell." Olivia said as we sat down. I was across from Jamal. We all sat in silence.
"I'm wearing indigo tonight. I though we should claim colors to avoid outfit clashes. Indigo? Any objections?" Ruby asked and we all shook our heads. "Oh, and my pants have red pockets. I know, it sounds weird, but it works." He added and I started eating.
"What are the pockets for? Roofies?" Olivia asked and Monse and I just nodded our heads.
"So, what time should we meet?" My brother asked us all and I looked at everyone.
"Yeah, let's get that in the books. The more specific, the better. What are you guys thinking, like 8:00? 8:05? 8:10?" Jamal asked us, I was down for whenever Cesar was good to leave.
"I'm gonna play it by ear. I'm not sure I'm feeling it." Olivia said to us, to be honest I wasn't either.
"What? Why?" Ruby asked her, it was pretty obvious.
"Not sure I'm in the mood to be objectified. If I want to see boners, I'll just go online." Olivia said to her, same goes for me as well.
"Didn't you hear Principal Sarge? The dance is a no-bone zone." Jamal said to us and like anyone was sticking to that.
"Are you kidding? Dances are cesspools off bad behavior. I don't want to go." Monse said to us all.
"I don't either, I'm not in the mood to become a victim to some guy." I said to them all and they were all confused.
"Yeah, people get freaky, but what's wrong with getting freaky? I don't get it." Ruby said to us, live it to a man to say that kind of stuff.
"Explain it to us. Why don't you wanna go? You were pretty excited this morning." Cesar said to her, I didn't want to hear about this morning.
"That was before I remembered how lame dances are. And maybe we're just not in the mood." Monse said to them all.
"Did you ever think about that?" I asked them before eating my food.
"Oh, is it your menses?" Ruby asked us in a whisper.
"Her what?" Olivia asked him, I know he did not just say that.
"They're lady ponds has runneth red." He said to us like some fucked up Shakespeare.
"Lady pond?" Monse and I asked him.
"What? What Am I saying wrong?" He asked us and the three of us looked at each other.
"Everything!" We shouted at him.
"You guys don't understand what it's like to be a woman and treated like an object. We have hearts!" Monse shouted at them all.
"And feelings!" I shouted at them all.
"And minds. So, take out any question that we're going tonight. The answer is no. With a period, 'cause that's what it's actually called." Olivia said to them all.
"Olivia, Y/n, let's go dine in a less hostile environment." Monse said to us as we all grabbed our trays.
"I was starting to think you'd never say that." I said to her as I stood up.
"You read my mind." Olivia said and we walked away from them. After lunch we went to class and didn't think of Jamal and us kissing again tonight. After the school day ended the three of us walked home together.
"We should go to the dance." Monse said to us. What happened to we're not going.
"What now?" I asked her.
"What? Why?" Olivia asked her.
"Because we can't let him- -I mean, them win." Monse said to us I still didn't want to go.
"No way. We need to stand our ground." Olivia said to us all.
"I have to agree there going will prove their point." I said to them all and Monse scoffed.
"Which is why we can't sit at home. We have to go." Monse said to us this whole thing was confusing.
"I'm totally confused." Olivia said to the two of us.
"Your not the only one." I said to her and she gave me a little smile.
"We're falling prey to the obvious argument, which is that we have to sit out to make a point. But the point is, we go. If we don't, they win." Monse said and now I was understanding.
"Still confused. How are they winning?" Olivia asked and I knew Monse already had an answer.
"By repressing us! By staying home, it's like they're putting us in emotional burkas, giving us no choice." Monse said to us and I nodded at what she said.
"So we've got to get back at them." I said to them all I had a smile appear on my face.
"I get it. We need to shed the burkas and flaunt the boobs." Olivia said and that was definitely something I could do.
"Yes! Our body, our choice." Monse said and we all smiled.
"We have to go. And look sexy." Olivia said to us all and I smiled.
"I have a few things I can put on." I said to them all with a smile.
"But not for them, for us." Monse said to her.
"So, I'm dressing for you two." Olivia said to us all.
"I'm also dressing for you two." I said with a smile.
"And I'm dressing for you two. Once I figure out how to look sexy." Monse said to to us and Olivia and I looked at each other.
"It's a good thing you know us." Olivia said to her with a smile.
"If you need me to bring things I'll bring them." I said to her with a smile. I went home and changed before heading around to Monse's I was a bit late. When we arrived at the school we found out that the dance was canceled. Very last minute. We saw a lot of people walking away.
"Don't be nervous. We'll be your boner blocker." Olivia said to the nervous looking Monse.
"You've got us." I said to her with a smile.
"What's happening? What is it?" Ruby asked Jasmine as she stood next to the gate.
"Some bullshit is what it is! The cancelled the dance because of a fight. Man, I mean, really? Two putas got into it in Life Skills yesterday, but we still manage to make soufflés. A fight ain't nothing!" Jasmine said to us that's such a stupid reason.
"It wasn't just that. Some fool pulled out a gun." The girl stood beside Jasmine said to us.
"Who cares? It took me forever to get ready. I even shaved my chocha for this. And it was a two-man job." Jasmine said while looking at Ruby. She had such a huge crush on him.
"Jasmine how about we go calm you down." I said to her before walking away. Yes I kinda was friends with her but that's because we'd been friends for years.
"Yo, Monse's dad's out of town, so party at Monse's!" Cesar shouted and we all cheered. What trickery had my brother pulled this. We then all started walking over to Monse's. The whole first half I was in the kitchen drinking beer. I saw that Ruby was squished as I sat on the end of the couch.
"Help me." He said to me and I looked at Jasmine.
"So tell me Jasmine, how have you been tell me everything and in detail." I said to her and she started talking about everything. She then started talking about her two man job. She was then going to show it to us and I went to get some shots. After a while everyone nearly had left I'd passed out.
"Come on lil spookette let's get home." I heard Cesar say to me.
"I don't want to." I said to him as he pulled me up.
"Your drunk and we're leaving." He said before we went home.
