Chapter ten

It was the day after. Oscar had to shave Cesar's hair. He'd taken the next step to being a Santo. And me I was just in room. I was told to be careful now. I was now going to be made a prime target of anything the prophets would have going around. I was getting changed into my dress when there's was a knock on the door. "I'm getting ready? Give me a minute." I said to whoever it was.

"How much longer at you going to be?" Cesar's voice rang from the other side of the door.

"Give me a minute." I said to him and within a minute I was ready. Taking in Cesar's new look.

"Wow, who are you and what did you do with my brother." I said to him and he shook his head at me.

"I'm still the same brother that you grew up with. Don't worry. Now let's go and support Olivia." He said to me and I saw Oscar in the kitchen. I smiled at him. He was cooking. His favorite thing to do. When we managed to get to the church I saw Monse and Ruby. Looking like they were arguing.

"He's not coming and she probably won't either." We heard Monse say and that was definitely about us.

"But they're already here." Me and Cesar said at the same time to them.

"Give me some of those." Cesar said as he took a few programs I then took some as well. Passing them out to people that were coming in. I was hoping that soon I'd see Jamal turn up. But I know that that wouldn't happen at all. He was probably too busy with the money. After the ceremony had taken place Cesar went to talk with Olivia.

"It was a nice ceremony." Ruby said to Cesar and I looked at him.

"Yeah." Cesar said, I know that he hasn't killed Latrelle which made it even worse for us.

"You didn't kill him." Monse said to him and I looked at him.

"I knew when you came home that you didn't." I said to him and if he did then I would be even more surprised.

"Monse!" Ruby said to her.

"She's right Ruby." I said to them.

"He's not dead, but...he's gone." Cesar said to us and that didn't mean anything. He could still come back.

"What does that mean?" Monse asked him and I looked at him.

"Besides how do you know he listened to you." I said to him, he was a prophet after all and they were sly. It wasn't long until the Martinez's had a camera in our face taking a group picture.

"Ay, qué lindos. Come on, Ruby. Help your dad pack the car. Come on!" Mrs. Martinez said before she started dragging the twins away.

"I do need help. With your mother. Not the car." Mr. Martinez said making me laugh a little bit. Surely she can't be that bad.

"Give me a minute." Ruby said to him and his dad walked away.

"If Latrelle's not dead, doesn't that leave you two vulnerable?" Monse asked Cesar. Exactly, I was in danger too.

"It's handled. And we never talk about it again. Now this is Olivia's day, and if I were you, I'd be more worried about those dance steps." Cesar said to her and I couldn't help but smile.

"Ruby! Por favor!" Mrs. Martinez said to him.

"I'll see you guys back at the house." Ruby said and I looked at them.

"I'm going to go with Ruby." I said to them both before leaving. I then managed to catch up with the Martinez's.

"Is everything okay, Y/n?" Mrs. Martinez asked me and I looked at her with a smile.

"I was just wondering if you had room for one more." I said to her and she looked at me with a smile.

"There's always room for you." She said to me. I'd always gotten on well with the Martinez family ever since I was little. They'd taken me on as a daughter in same light which always made me feel as if I was at home with them. Once we got back to the house soon it was ready for the party time.

"We've got a full house. You ready to get this party started? Agh!" Ruby said that was before he saw how Jasmine was. She was ill. Ill as could be.

"I think I might have to go home." Jasmine said to us, no crap. She needed to.

"What's wrong with you?" Ruby asked her while trying to get as far back as he could.

"I don't know. I just keep passing out." Jasmine said to us and she was clearly not well.

"You have to rally. I can wear gloves." Ruby said to her. What she needed was to go home and rest.

"I'm down with that. It's about to get dirty up in...here." Jasmine said before passing out again. Well she was gone.

"Jasmine!" Ruby shouted at her.

"Taste my juice nalga! Dos quesadillas Por favor." Jasmine said to us, that was it. She was done for today.

"Can someone escort Jasmine home?" Ruby asked the remaining for of us. Jamal still wasn't here. But that's not a surprise.

"No." We all said and Jasmine was starting to cough more as Ruby walked her to the door.

"Buenas noches." Jasmine said as she passed by Abuelita on the way out. Who had an entourage behind her.

"Ladies, follow me to the kitchen." She said to her entourage. "Mijo, where are we gonna set up the buffet?" She asked Ruby.

"On the gables in the back." Ruby said to her but there wasn't any.

"But they're not there." She said to him, could this be anymore of a disaster.

"What? Well, who moved them?" Ruby asked and I saw Cesar stand up.

"A guy told me he needed them." Cesar said to him, I hope Cesar had his Will written out. Because I don't think Ruby would take to that.

"It was the fireworks guy." Monse said while standing up.

"Something about extra space." I said to Ruby while standing up.

"We're having fireworks?" Olivia asked while standing up with a smile.

"Thank you. Thank you, everyone, for spoiling the surprise. Yes, fireworks. At 9:30." Ruby said to us. Yeah, we were all dying tonight. Ruby would be the one to do it.

"Someone get his parties out of a bunch." Abuelita said before walking into the kitchen for her friends. Olivia then went over to Ruby.

"We are all dead. Ruby is killing us." I said to Monse and Cesar in a whisper. And they both laughed at me.

"Nothings spoiled." Olivia said to Ruby and it wasn't.

"Oh, no, we're just down a dama and a chambelan. And one of your surprises is ruined." Ruby said and now she knew that she had more than one.

"One of my surprises?" She asked with a smile.

"Yes. But that's all I'm giving you until it's spoiled...which it undoubtedly will be. This day is cursed. I'm telling you, it's cursed. The only upshot is that our D to C numbers are even again." Ruby said to us and D to C had to be dick and coochie.

"D to C numbers? Is that dick to coochie- -" Monse started before Ruby cut her off.

"Get your head out the gutter! Damas to Chambelanes. Now that Jasmine's out, you get to dance with me." Ruby said to Monse and I knew that she wouldn't be looking forward to that.

"My prayers have been answered." Monse said to him making Cesar and I laugh.

"Everyone, assume your positions." Ruby said to us all and I started to head outside. All I needed was for me to make sure the rest of the night was going to go well. We had 20 minutes to do everything. And once the event started. Ruby was dancing with Olivia. Monse with Cesar. And I was with some other guy that was a friend of the Martinez family. The whole time I was thinking. I should be with Jamal. At the end we both separated.

"Oh, your hairs falling." Monse said to Olivia.

"Let's get that sorted out." I said to her and we took her off to the side.

"Here, let me to..." Monse said to her as she started to put the hair into place.

"Do you know what you're doing?" She asked Monse, I had no idea myself really.

"I know I don't seem like I know what I'm doing, but- -I don't know what I'm doing." Monse said to her and we smiled at each other.

"I don't know either." I said to them both. We had no hope at this.

"Show me where it is." Olivia said and Monse moved her hand to it and she sorted it. "Does my look messy?" She asked us and we shook our heads.

"Nope. Looks perfect. Like you." Monse said to her with a smile.

"And nothing will ever change that." I said to her with a smile.

"Thanks for having my back." She said to us both before kissing both our cheeks.

"Cesar and I are just friends." Monse blurted out. She knew what Olivia was thinking.

"I'm going to leave you two to talk." I said to them both with a smile before going back to the party. After some time they were playing a slow song.

"Still no sign of your boyfriend." The guy I danced with earlier said to me and I shook my head.

"I don't think he's coming." I said to him and he took his hand and placed it in front of me.

"Then, dance with me. Just one dance." He said to me and I saw that he had a smile on his face.

"Just one dance. That's it." I said to him and that's when we started to dance. And when the song was over I went to dance with the others.

"Look at that pimp stick." Ruby said to us and we saw a guy dance with one.

"I miss Jamal. I gotta apologize." Monse said to us.

"I miss him to." I said to them all.

"You will. But right now, you got to dance." Ruby said to us. And that's what I was doing. Letting loose of everything.

"Then this one's for Jamal." Monse said to us and we all looked up.

"For Jamal!" We shouted to the sky and kept dancing. In this moment I could stay forever. But not all good days have happy endings especially not this one.

"Cesar! Y/n!" Ruby shouted and that's when we both looked at Ruby. To see Latrelle. Clutching a gun. Firing it. We all got down but it was too late.

"Are you both okay?" Cesar asked Monse and I. I started to press my hands all over my body.

"I'm okay. I'm okay." I said to Cesar.

"Yeah." Monse said, I didn't even get a chance to look around to see Olivia and Ruby. I heard a voice instead.

"Ruby! Ruby! Ruby! No!" Mrs. Martinez shouted, my best friend. I couldn't bring myself to turn around.

"Mijo! Mijo!" Mr. Martinez shouted. I then turned around. Mrs. Martinez began to cry. "No! Mijo?" Mr. Martinez got out. He was unresponsive.

"Call 911! Call 911! Ruby! You're gonna be fine. You're gonna be okay, Ruby. Okay...Not my baby. Not my baby! Ruby..." Mrs. Martinez started to say. I felt something run down my face. I didn't realize they were tears.

"Ruby! Ruby!" I heard Olivia shout. She'd been hit as well.

"Mija, stay still." Abuelita said to her.

"Ruby! Ruby!" Olivia shouted. Where was the ambulances. When they finally turned up I was scared they were too late. Too late to save both of my friends. This was something that I'd always remember.
