The Fall

After the reveal, the entire dynamic of the group had changed. No longer were the participants pitting themselves against each other. Instead, they had decided to temporarily put aside their differences until they had discovered the plan of the scientists.

A few of them suggested that they start switching around meals, as a way to stop taking whatever chemicals they were dosed with. However, Emily had pointed out that if they were like drugs, then the participants could all go into withdrawal. So they had continued to eat whatever the scientists were giving them.

A few more of the participants had figured out how to use their powers as well. Once they figured out what the powers were, some of them could just try very hard for awhile to get themselves started, instead of relying on emotions.

As someone who had figured out his power, instead of coming to it by accident, Jaxon was given the job of training others to do the same. He, of course, had started with Toby. After a few hours of training, all of which had taken place in the pool, he managed to control the water.

The other members of the group who were able to harness some control of their powers included Jonah, who found himself able to bend and control light, and Aria, who had managed to figure out how to fly (although the mechanics of steering were a bit lost on her). The group had agreed on one rule about the usage of powers — they were to never be used around the scientists.

Things remained relatively normal, at least appearance-wise. That was why, while at dinner, one fateful night, all of the participants were able to talk freely, albeit quietly.

"I swear, Jonathan, I'm working on figuring out your power the best I can," Toby told the other man, moving his peas around on his plate mindlessly with his fork. "Once we do that, I bet you'll be able to figure out how to use it."

Jonathan looked at Westley, whose hand he was holding, and shyly smiled. "Well, whatever it is, it can't be as amazing as healing." Westley's face turned slightly pink, and he looked down, embarrassed.

Leonard was preoccupied, staring across the room as he thoughtfully twirled his fork in his hands. "Tiger doesn't seem as boastful as I would have expected, seeing as he's the Horus. Perhaps that's a side effect of whatever experiment they're doing on him?"

Jaxon glanced across the room to look at Tiger, who was quietly eating his steak next to Maya. "I don't believe so. Horus was arrogant in the mythology. If anything, I would expect the experiment to make him more so."

Toby looked up from his peas. He pointed to some of the various tables, where the other participants were talking. "You know, just because no serious side effects have begun to appear yet, doesn't mean they won't. I mean, if they can change Tiger's eye color, and Westley's hair color, then anything could happen physically to us."

Westley shook his head at Toby. He seemed happier than he had at the beginning of the project. "Come on Toby. Nothing bad has happened, and I don't think it will. I mean, you and Jaxon have had powers for a bit, and you're both fine — well, other than Jaxon being white now, that is," he replied.

Jonathan began to shake, suddenly fearful, after Westley spoke. He turned to his boyfriend, eyes wide. "Westley, what you just said — don't ask me how, but I think that something bad is about to happen." Leonard opened his mouth to object to Jonathan's statement, but at that moment, a gasp came from the other side of the table.

The boys all whipped their heads around to look to see what was happening. Jaxon looked back fearfully, clutching his chest. His eyes met Toby's. Then he tumbled to the ground.

"Jaxon!" Toby screamed, voice cracking. He ran to the side of his friend, whose breath was shallow, and panicked. Jaxon grasped Toby's arm, eyes full of fear.

Tears began to roll down Toby's face, as he began to realize what was happening. Jaxon had too, and had begun to sob uncontrollably. "Toby, I'm not — I'm not ready. I don't want to die. I don't want to. Please! Help! Oh god, it hurts! I'm not —" Then the British man went limp, and his eyes glazed over.

"JAXON!" Toby screeched, shaking his friend. "NO! Wake up, please, wake up." Suddenly, Emily appeared next to him, and began to try CPR.

"Jax, please, don't die on me. I never meant for it to end like this," she pleaded, crying. The other participants could only stare on in horror.

The door to the dining hall slammed open, and Chaz came in, followed by guards and workers carrying a stretcher. The guards violently pulled Emily and Toby away from Jaxon's body. The two of them screamed at the guards and struggled.

With the guards holding the participants back, Chaz motioned to the workers. The men in the white polos set down the stretcher. They then proceeded to lift Jaxon's body onto it. But then one pulled out a sheet, and Toby and Emily began to break down into screaming and sobbing.

The workers carried Jaxon out. His arm hung limply over the side of the stretcher, the only thing visible under the sheet. The guards and Chaz followed them out. The door clicked shut, and all was silent.
