Chapter Seven: Saira Levine
Saira went about her day through her classes, but she wondered about Orchid and Stoll. Did they get caught? If so, how did Roux catch them? They were very cautious and left no trace, Orchid didn't even use the school's trashy wifi! At lunch, she was relieved to find Orchid sitting at a table in the far back, but Stoll was still nowhere to be found.
Saira chalked up some excuse that she couldn't find a seat at her regular table, but there was also another problem. Orchid's roommate, Bailey, and her boyfriend, Robert, were there. Can't discuss the Shades of Gray, she sulked.
"What happened?" Bailey questioned, poking her fork at a plate of salad.
"Yeah, are you in trouble?" Robert asked. "Let me guess, you cheated on an exam? Don't worry, same."
The girls blinked at him. "I-I actually didn't cheat," Robert said quickly. "Okay, fine, I used a calculator on one math question, but that's it!" Trust me, buddy, we have bigger issues than using a calculator.
"Babe, don't worry about it," Bailey reassured him. "But seriously, Orchid! Spill the tea! Or beans! Whatever floats your boat."
Orchid frowned. "Headmaster Roux wanted me to take a statement for Professor Green's suicide." The word suicide was forced out of her throat, Saira could tell. "For when the police come, although, that's probably not soon."
The rest of the conversation was bland, so Saira tuned out. Suddenly, a stalked up to the tablegroup. Saira blinked, instantly recognizing her as Scarlett Mako from Ruth's description. "Scarlett?" Bailey asked, looking confused. "Aren't you suspended or something?"
Saira glanced at Orchid, who looked mortified, but didn't show it. What is up with everyone discovering us? Saira Levine just prayed they didn't know about the Shades of Gray project. "We're stuck at Silverleaf, dumbo," Scarlett sneered.
"Don't call my girlfriend a dumbo," Robert rolled his eyes.
Scarlett had rich brown skin and a buzzcut that screamed 'FAST FASHION STATEMENT!' and Saira had to admit—she admired Scarlett's fashion. She, herself, loved to stand out. "Like I care."
"What do you want?" Bailey snapped, irritated.
"To talk to Miss Scholarship about Ruth," Scarlett said, yanking Saira from her seat, her grip tightening on her wrists. Here we go, Saira rolled her eyes. "Trust me, you won't miss her."
"Put my tray away for me, will you?" Saira told Orchid, exasperated. Sometimes, she didn't know how Ruth put up with Scarlett. She was dragged outside the Dining Hall and Scarlett pushed her to the floor before yanking up by the wrist.
"Shut up about Ruth, got it?"
Harsh. But Saira could be harsher. "What's your problem? Cranky after @shades_of_gray exposed you? You're sick and disgusting for ruining Stan's life. No wonder why you dropped out of the student body council after Stanley was expelled, the guilt was all over you like blood. Scarlett? Red? Blood?"
"Ugh! Shut up!" Scarlett screeched, huffing. She looked crazy. "You said insane shit about Ruth and she went crying to Ivory's dorm. And by the way? All @shades_of_gray said is allegedly. No proof, Miss Scholarship."
"At least I got a scholarship since you just have daddy's money. And by the way? It's a freaking screenshot, that's your proof, Miss Scarlett Mako," she spat. Scarlett was appalled, loosening her grasp on Saira's wrists. She took this choice and pulled away, releasing herself.
Scarlett pushed Saira and she fell against the wall, sliding down to the floor. Scarlett loomed over her like a giant and well, she was really tall. "I-I was supporting Ivory."
Saira sucked in a deep breath. "And you destroyed Stanley Crawford's life in return."
Scarlett Mako scoffed, spinning on her heels. "Like you haven't destroyed someone else's life before, Sarah Le Vil." Saira froze, stuck in place, and utterly paralyzed.
Sarah Le Vil. No, she left Sarah Le Vil in the past, and the past always stays buried. Maybe Scarlett confused Saira with Sarah, she thought reasonably. No, that doesn't make any sense.
"Wait, Mako, don't go!" Saira cried out, scrambling to her feet. How did Scarlett Mako know about her past? No, no, Saira could never be Sarah ever again. Never again.
The girl had already disappeared into the shadows of the hall. Saira ran after her, grabbing Scarlett's hand and pulling her back. Scarlett screamed, falling back, collapsing with Saira.
They both tumbled to the floor and Saira groaned, sitting up. Why had she been so reactive? She risked everything just to check if Scarlett knew about her past, she may as well have just given it away.
"You freak!" Scarlett shrieked in that shrill voice of hers.
"Why did y-you call me Sarah Le Vil?" Saira demanded.
She crackled. "You think you're so slick, Gossip Girl? Think again. A slug will always leave a residue," she snarled, standing up. She walked away, disappearing back into the shadows.
This time, Saira didn't chase after Scarlett. She panted, burying her head in her hands. She was so screwed.
