Chapter Eight: Headmaster Roux's Recordings of Orchid Gray & Stoll Finnegan
[ORCHID GRAY'S RECORDING STARTS]
Roux: Do you mind if I record this, Miss Gray?
Gray: Yes, I mind very much. I do not wish to be recorded.
Roux: This is just for the police once they come and recover Professor Green's body, may he rest in peace. It is an audio recording, Orchid. May I call you that; Orchid?
Gray: Uhm, yeah, sure, Headmaster Roux.
Roux: Orchid, how did you discover Professor Green's body? I understand it's very disturbing and traumatic for you, so take your time.
Gray: [inaudible] I... It's all very strange, I will say that. Like I said before, I don't like working in the Study Hall, so Green always offers me his classroom. Sometimes, I work there even during Silverleaf Newspaper Club meetings.
Roux: So you were going there to study?
Gray: Write my English paper, actually, but basically the same. The door was stuck, so I kept twisting the doorknob until it opened, then I face-planted.
Roux: Oh I'm sorry to hear that.
Gray: Don't worry, I'm not dead. [pauses] Sorry, that was inappropriate since Professor Green's, er, dead. The lights in the classroom were turned off, so I flicked the switch, and that's when I saw his corpse. It was just hanging there, it looked so violent to me.
Roux: [pauses] Violent?
Gray: His wrists were slit, which I guess is kind of normal for a suicide, but his knuckles were bruised. It looks sketchy, Headmaster Roux.
Roux: [nervous laughter] I don't think our precious school, Silverleaf Academy, is sketchy by your words, Miss Gray—I mean, Orchid.
Gray: Sorry, I'm just voicing my concerns. I-It's really hard with Professor Green gone, he wa-was my favourite professor at Silverleaf. [sobs]
Roux: Oh, please, don't cry. Here's a tissue.
Gray: Thanks.
Roux: Are you okay to continue?
Gray: Yes, I think I am. After that, Professor Asher found me because I screamed earlier. She was crying when she found Green's corpse, I believe. She and I went out to the hall, she ordered me to stay and not move, and then Professor Asher went to find me.
Roux: Thank you, Orchid. Now, do you know Stoll Finnegan?
Gray: [pauses] I-I know he's the janitor and younger brother of Sam Finnegan, he's the groundskeeper of Silverleaf. I think he hardly matters. I mean, he did see me crying and tried to comfort me, a really bad job of it, though.
Roux: Let me put it in a different way—do you know Sam Finnegan?
Gray: He's the groundskeeper.
Roux: Video footage shows that you encountered Mr. Finnegan before you entered Professor Green's classroom.
Gray: What, wait—are you implying that I'm the killer of Green? Oh m-my god, Headmaster Roux! [sobs] That's so cruel of you!
Roux: No, no, I am not implying that at all!
Gray: [cries] Are you suggesting that there was foul play in Professor Green's suicide? Is it even a suicide? Oh my gosh, oh my gosh— [gets cut off]
Roux: Miss Orchid Gray, control yourself! I am not implying anything with your association, you're a student for crying aloud— [gets cut off]
Gray: [gasps] Are you saying that Sam Finnegan did something?
Roux: Jesus Christ, Orchid, stop it. As your headmaster, I order you to stop and apologize to me.
Gray: Sorry, sir.
Roux: Now, that's better. Tell me about your encounter with Finnegan.
Gray: Nothing much, he just asked where I was going. I told him I was going to Professor Green's classroom, that's all.
Roux: Alright, thank you, Orchid Gray. Can you tell Stoll Finnegan to come inside now? I'm ready to take his statement now.

[STOLL FINNEGAN'S RECORDING STARTS]
Finnegan: Uh, I'm supposed to be on my break right now, sir.
Roux: [laughs] That won't be an issue, will it, Stoll?
Finnegan: No, it won't.
Roux: Can I call you that; Stoll?
Finnegan: Yup.
Roux: [chuckles] Your name is funny, unique even. Stoll. Sounds like stole to me. But you're not a thief by any chance, hm?
Finnegan: Haha, no, I'm not. Orchid said to me once, saying I was like a thief.
Roux: Oh, so you're well acquainted with Miss Gray?
Finnegan: What? No, I-I'm not, I just saw her outside the hall, crying about Professor Green's death. It's really sad, by the way, R. I. P., Green.
Roux: Really? Because Orchid said she doesn't know you well, but you seemed to know her. I'll give you another chance, Stoll—do you know her?
Finnegan: I-I... [sighs] Sir, it's called a crush. I'm a teenager, so yeah, I probably have a bunch of crushes on girls. Sorry.
Roux: Oh. Oh. My apologies, Stoll.
Finnegan: Yeah, don't worry about it.
Roux: Moving forward, you said you were on Professor Green's class for the janitor cleaning roster. However, when I checked the roster, it was actually your brother's job to clean the class. Care to explain?
Finnegan: [groans] Okay, don't gang up on me, but maybe I overheard Sam talking about Orchid working at Green's classroom instead of the Study Hall. I'm not a stalker, but that's why I was there even if Green wasn't on my cleaning roster.
Roux: Okay, thank you, Stoll.
Finnegan: [stands up] Is that all?
Roux: Oh, one more thing before you go. Are you aware that Sam met Orchid in the hallway after cleaning Professor Green's classroom?
