MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
"Angel" Nik sighed in frustration as I rummaged through my shopping bags full of new clothes, for an outfit.
"Don't talk to me right now Niklaus, I am so angry at you" I snapped stripping out of my silk rope to get dressed.
"Try to understand Thyra".
"You didn't even consult me" I glared.
"I don't want to fight angel" he tiredly replied, grabbing a towel and heading towards our en-suite.
We had been fighting all morning, it of course was his fault.
"Then you shouldn't have allowed your new hybrid and her mutts move into our home, without telling me" I shouted.
"I told you she just showed up with her pack last-night" Nik snapped holding the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"And you just so graciously allowed them to stay" I scoffed.
"We need them on our side if we want to bring Eden home. Esther is building an army of wolfs and if anyone has a chance of disarming that army it's the queen of the crescent wolves, if Arielle gets my mother's wolves on our side, then we are just that little closer to bringing our daughter home".
"Your new little pet better unite those wolves quickly, because it's starting to smell like wet dog around here and I don't like it" I huffed, storming into my closet to finish getting ready for the day.
***
And hour later and I was ready for the day, I was dressed in a mini, baby-pink, feathered skirt, a blue and white long sleeved button-down shirt and a black blazer with a leather collar, I paired it with some pointed, laced-up, stiletto ankle boots and a gold choker.
My hair was lightly curled, my make-up simple with some eye-line, mascara and red lipstick.
I walked down the stairs into the open part of the compound to find a beautiful array of food, laid out on the dining table, only Nik would try and make this up to me with brunch. I rolled my eyes picking at the bowl of red grapes, which he knew were my favourite.
"You have to work harder than this Niklaus" I sang, as he walked up behind me.
"I admit I've been thinking of a way to make it up to you, the both of us in bed naked came to mind, but this wasn't me" Nik replied as he kissed the side of my head lovingly, making me roll my eyes.
"Must have been Elijah" I shrugged pouring myself and Nik a glass of orange juice then handing him a croissant.
"This wasn't my doing..." Elijah stated coming into the compound, making me wonder where he had been all night.
"Then where did this all come from, because I doubt the wolf queen did this to pay us back for a free kennel for her and her and her pack to sleep in" I quipped making Elijah sigh and Nik smirk.
Then out of nowhere, the lid on the silver platter started to rattle, making the three of us jump. Nik looked quite uneasy as he stepped forward to lift the lid of the platter, which released two starlings that flew up toward the ceiling, causing all three of us to duck.
"What the hell was that?" I wondered, as Nik read the card which had been on the platter.
"An invitation from our mother" Nik sighed showing us the card which read, Dinner, your home, 8pm
"Great, not only do I have to live with a bunch of hairy beasts, now I have to host your mother, a woman who loves to destroy my life, this day just gets better and better" I sighed angrily as I stormed back up to mine and Nik's room.
"Oh, and feed that lot to the dogs, with any luck its poisoned" I called slamming my bedroom door behind me.
After running to my bedroom and slamming the door like a spoiled teenager I stepped out onto the balcony for some fresh air hoping I could calm myself down while praying that I could get through tonight.
"Angel?"
"I can't do this again Nik" I whispered.
"Just think of Eden, our daughter" he replied coming up behind me, wrapping his hands around my midriff and pulling me backwards so I was leaning against his chest.
"She's all I think about Nik, those blue eyes, her tiny hands and feet and how she smelt of the wildflowers from our old home. It haunts my dreams Nik".
"If my calculations are correct she was conceived in our meadow among the wildflowers" Nik joked making me hit his arm playfully.
It was hard to believe that Eden had been conceived over a thousand years ago, I had thought that I lost her when Esther turned us into vampires only to find out she had put a spell on me making sure my daughter would be born a thousand years into the future.
It took Niklaus finally breaking his hybrid curse, sleeping with a wolf, and then a powerful witch (celeste) to perform a spell letting me deliver Eden.
"Why does she hate me Niklaus?" I wondered.
"I think your mistaken angel it is me she despises".
"If Esther doesn't hate me then why would she kill my sister, turn me into a vampire, take our daughter away twice, while in the meantime repeatedly try and kill me" I huffed pulling from my husband's warm embrace to walk back into our room.
"I don't know Thyra" Nik sighed following me inside.
"I should just go down to that cemetery and kill her, get it done and over with" I snapped my anger returning.
"You will do no such thing. Esther's a master in the art of possession. We know whose body she currently inhabits. We must decipher her intentions before she finds a new host" Elijah interrupted making me jump in surprise.
"I swear if you keep doing that I'm buying you a bell" I glared at Elijah as I held my hand over my heart, Elijah simply smiled in return.
"Well, her last invitation was an assassination attempt on all her children. I think we can assume her intentions are decidedly foul" Nik replied to his brother's statement.
"And we got out of that last predicament by the skin of our teeth" I muttered.
Well, then. We have... this afternoon to prepare for the worst" Elijah stated walking back out of the room, just as quietly as he came.
"I'm serious about that bell" I called after him, making Nik laugh as he followed his brother, no doubt wanting to know Elijah's plan.
***
It was nearly eight-pm, the fine china had been placed, caterers and waiters had been compelled to serve and our plan was in motion.
Marcel had put Elijah in contact with a witch across the river named Lenore, she would do a spell to trap Ester in her new body that way we could kill her permanently.
Unfortunately, Lenore had been captured by Esther and her mysterious second in command. Luckily, we had Oliver the blonde werewolf as our mole, he had contacted Arielle and told her where Lenore was being held captive.
Now Arielle was on her way to save the witch and was going to make sure she went through with the spell, all our phones were on alert ready for Arielle to tell us when Lenore was done, because as soon as the spell was complete I was going to plunge a steak knife straight through my mother-in-law's heart, just like she had tried to do, with Eden all those months ago.
"Are these outfits really necessary?" Niklaus questioned pulling at his tie.
"I agree, my previous outfit was just as fabulous" I spoke, looking down at my new outfit which consisted of a tight black lace jumpsuit, with nude underlining that made it look like it was my skin and black open-toed stilettos with a pain black necklace. I had also flattened my hair and re-done my makeup, with a smoky-eye and a nude lip.
"Appearance is a way of showing respect. Mother will be more likely to surrender her true intentions, although I wish some of us didn't look so naked" Elijah stated, as I chugged back yet another glass of champagne.
"It's called fashion Elijah, besides it just gives the illusion of nudity" I replied.
"And what a lovely illusion it is" Nik flirted.
"I would let you take it off later, but I'm still mad at you" I teased fixing his tie. Our playfulness was interrupted by Elijah uncomfortably clearing his throat.
"Thyra's smashing outfit aside, I doubt her guard will drop just because I'm dressed like a bloody lawyer" Nik sighed.
"We need every advantage we can get, Niklaus" Elijah answered as he lit more candles.
"You always did excel in diplomacy. Just know, if she tries anything, I'll tear her new body to pieces" Nik threatened.
"Not if I get to her first" I smiled, refilling my glass with yet more alcohol.
Our talking was interrupted by a sarcastic laugh which came from an unfamiliar dark skinned man.
"You three haven't changed a bit! Linens and silk to disguise your pathetic self -loathing" the stranger said directing his statement at Elijah.
"And you - despite the arrogant facade, you're still the same paranoid little boy, full of hate and fear. Then there's the wife, who despite her strong appearance and devil may care attitude is forever broken inside" he continued aiming the end of his speech at Nik and I, Nik's hands clenched into fists as he took a protective step in front of me.
"Forgive me, I don't believe I've had the pleasure" Elijah spoke glaring suspiciously at our uninvited guest.
"Oh, you mean you don't recognize me? So much for the unbreakable bonds of family, huh? Always and forever indeed" the stranger mocks.
It couldn't be could it?
"It's been a long time, Finn" Nik spits, confirming what I had been thinking.
"Now that the introductions are out of the way, let's eat" Finn clapped making his way to an empty chair, while I grabbed a bottle of the strongest bourbon we had.
It was going to be a long night.
***
I was half-way through my bottle of bourbon and it hadn't even been an hour since Finn revealed himself.
The room was filled with awkward silence, distrust, anger and betrayal which made me drink even more.
"What an aromatic bordot?" Finn asked sniffing the glass of wine Elijah had poured.
"Well, it was a challenge to find a good pairing. What wine goes well with treachery?" Nik snapped.
"Don't pout, brother. Tonight, is meant to be a happy occasion!" Finn smirked, as he whispered something in a waiter's ear making us all a little suspicious.
"What exactly are we celebrating?" Elijah wondered.
"Why, my return, of course! Remember, I spent nine hundred years - right? - lying daggered in a box. I'm rather enjoying this new body. Strolling about your lovely city that, uh, you've made your home. But, do tell me - what'd I miss? Regale me with your contributions to society! Medicine? Philosophy? Art? Or, have you three merely cut a path of destruction across time?" Finn mocked making both Nik and I roll our eyes.
"The last time we met, you were helping our mother try to annihilate the lot of us! Let's not throw stones in glass houses" Nik smirked, just as one of the compelled help set another place at the table, across from Finn and beside me.
"Are we expecting someone other than your psychotic mother?" I questioned as Finn threw a glare my way.
"Mother will sit at the head. And, as for the seat across from me, that's reserved for another of our clan. Care to wager an educated guess? How about a paranoid one?" Finn mocked staring in Nik's direction, my heart stopped it couldn't be him he wouldn't do this to me.
"Well, there's no way Kol would listen to anything other than his ego" Nik answered as if reading my mind.
"And yet, our mother has made such a compelling argument that even he, the wildest of us Mikaelsons, has seen the error of his ways and accepted his new form, with vigour! Change, my dear family is inevitable".
"Lie's" I hissed.
"I'm afraid I speak the truth Thyra" he smirked.
"Kol would never do that, he would have come to me the minute he was breathing again" I replied refusing to believe that my best friend would come back from the dead and not tell me.
"Maybe Kol is finally seeing you for what you really are".
"And what's that Finn?"
"A pathetic girl who lets her paranoid husband walk all over her, it's sad really".
I stood up calmly taking a deep breath as Elijah and Niklaus watched me closely, I took the carving knife from the table testing its sharpness with my fingers, I was furious, Finn was here passing judgment as if he was better than us. Kol, my best-friend didn't even come to me when he was brought back from the dead and Esther could pop up at any moment and destroy my life yet again.
"Funny how easy it is for a man who spent nine-hundred years locked in a box for being a bore, to pass judgment" I snapped flinging the carving knife in his direction. Finn used his magic to make sure the knife embedded itself in the dining table.
"Oh! I suppose the honour of carving should go to the oldest. We have much to discuss" he laughed.
"You even sound like Esther" I spat sitting back down in my chair and drinking my bourbon straight from the bottle.
"I'm rather enjoying my evening" Finn said making me let out a rather unladylike snort.
"Well, I'd rather enjoy you getting to the point" Nik said frustrated.
"I had nine hundred years to learn to be patient. Although, I am curious why you kept me daggered in a box for so long"
"You were daggered from being am ever -simpering sycophant. Did Mother bring you back from the dead so you could wash her knickers?" Nik smirked.
"She raised me because I was treated unfairly! Cheated of all but the smallest portion of my life! Elijah, I can understand such cruelty coming from him, but I always thought of you as being the compassionate one! What did I do to deserve you turning your back on me? Were you afraid of Niklaus? Are you still? Or perhaps jealousy is what kept me locked in a box? You coveted the duties of the eldest brother, in which case you had near -on a millennium to fix the problems of this family, and instead, produced nine centuries of failure. While you Thyra, have gone above and beyond with your wifely duties, I'm sure after a thousand years your marriage to this beast is null and void, you've had plenty of chances to start a new life and better yourself and yet you haven't" Finn seethes, then realizes his anger has gotten the best of him and pinches the bridge of his nose with his thumb.
"You might reside - somewhat parasitically, I might add - in another body, but I assure you, in nine hundred years, your tedious sentiments remain quite the same. You see, Finn, like Father, you've always despised our supernatural existence. Father, of course, slaughtered and consumed his own, whereas you became pretentious and dull. Much like this meal. I will not ask you again - where is Mother?" Elijah demanded.
"Oh, my darling son. I've missed you, too" a sweet but condescending voice answered we all turned only to come face to face with a sweet and innocent looking teenager, but I learned long ago that looks can be deceiving.
"I would say it's lovely to see you again Esther, but I'm not that good at lying" I glared.
Esther took a deep breath brushing off my comment as she sat down in her seat.
"Why don't you say what you came here to say, so this wretched night can end?" Nik snapped his temper rearing its ugly head, I reached my hand across the table rubbing my fingers gently across his arm hoping to calm him a little.
"It pains me that you, Elijah and Thyra look at me with such disdain. I wish you could see that my every action has been to protect you!"
"You actually believe that, don't you? I knew you were a liar, but now I see you're utterly delusional" Nik laughed.
"If you can forget the hatred that you cling to and remember all the times I've mended and healed you. Elijah, do you recall the day Niklaus challenged your father to a duel? Did I leave your brother to die alone? What did I say, when you came to me and asked me to help him?"
"That you would rather die than to see any of your children suffer".
"Well that was then and this is now. You've already tried to kill us all once, what's to say you won't try and kill us all again?" I wondered.
"Thyra, I am sorry for everything I've done to you. I never meant you any harm, ever since that day you married my son you have been like another daughter to me" Esther explained as her eyes pleaded with me to understand.
"Your apologies mean nothing to me" I coldly responded, my tone making her flinch.
I turned my attention back to Nik only to find him in a world of his own, he was deep in thought. What he was thinking about I didn't know.
"The necklace" Nik suddenly said in a horrified tone as Elijah and I looked at him in confusion.
"It wasn't spelled to protect me. It made me weak".
That's when it all clicked, the necklace that Nik have given to Arielle for the spell to trap Esther in her body, it had been one of the only things given to Niklaus by his mother that he had treasured, he had even past it on to Marcellus.
"I sought to protect you from yourself! If you had killed your father in that duel, or anyone else in the course of your life, you would have activated your curse!" Esther told him, in other words she had spelled the necklace to make sure Mikael never found out about her affair with a werewolf.
"You ruined me! You left me to suffer at the hands of a father who valued only strength!" Nik roared getting up from his seat and slamming his hands down on the table.
"I kept you from becoming a beast for as long as I possibly could!" she shouted back.
"You lied to me! To hide your own transgressions because of your own fear! My whole life, I sought the approval I was denied by the man I thought was my father! You turned me into the weakling he hated" Nik continued as tears gathered in his eyes, I couldn't believe she he had the audacity to look sorry when she knew exactly what she had done.
"Look at me! You rant and you rave about the monster I have become, but you, Mother - you are the author of everything I am" Nik raged. I stood up coming to his side as I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his suit clad shoulder.
Suddenly Esther begins gasping for breath. Finn looks mildly alarmed as Esther faints and slumps over in her seat, Elijah manages to catch her before her head hits the table, and he looks at us all in shock.
"Well dinner ended much more quickly than I anticipated" I laughed, just as Nik lunged at Finn.
