Chapter 5- How to Put a Princess to Sleep
The first two days of the week went by mostly uneventful. They were relatively the same. They both consisted of Zarya helping and tending to the Queen and her daughter Zelda, then coming home to find Link and hear about his day. Then she would give him his school lessons for the day which mainly consisted of reading, writing, history, and his daily piano lesson.
She was also attempting to teach him the Shiekan language because he kept asking her too. He wanted to be able to talk to "Aunt Akilah and Uncle Cato" and his two best friends, Purah and Impa in Sheikah. Akilah and Cato being the genius researchers they were, had taught their two young daughters to be bilingual. The whole family could speak both Hylian and Sheikah perfectly. The parents could speak every race's language in Hyrule very well, and were planning on teaching them to Impa and Purah eventually among many other things.
Now obviously Cato and Akilah were not his real aunt and uncle, that was just what he called them because he saw them so much due to their close bonds with his parents. Alvar and Zarya knew Sheikah very well, but they knew no additional languages other than that and Hylian. So sometimes when Link and his parents went to visit them at their house in Kakariko they would all start to speak Sheikah for fun and practice and Link always felt a bit left out. So Zarya agreed to teach Link. He wanted to impress them and understand them better when the Sheikah family temporarily 'switched languages'.
Alvar's days on the other hand were the same as they usually were. Since King Rhoam was not traveling outside the castle until the weekend to Zora's Domain, he did not have to accompany him anywhere. So instead he devoted his time to continue to train the soldiers of the Hylian Army. Everyone at the castle was very on edge due to all the rumors and talk of the eventual awakening of Calamity Ganon, and the constant threat of the Yiga Clan always brewing trouble. The numbers of monsters prowling around Hyrule were steadily growing as well. Sometimes Alvar, alongside other generals and captains, would take their soldiers and wipe out large gatherings of the monsters to help keep Hyrule as peaceful and safe as possible.
Alvar did not train the entire army by himself. The whole Hylian Army was much too big for one man to handle. He was assisted by many other captains and trainers, but he was the main overseer. The Hylian force was split into many different platoons, companies, patrols, and units. There were also many different ranks a Hylian soldier could carry; Alvar being of the highest rank, a Royal Guard, was mostly training and practicing with the other Royal Guards.
On Wednesday though, the King and Queen had a late night council, which ran way later than Zelda's bedtime. Queen Zara always insisted on putting her daughter - who she loved so much - to bed every night. She insisted on it, instead of some servant simply taking little Zelda to her bedroom. But due to the council, she regrettably could not, so she assigned the task to Zarya. Of all her servants and maids, she trusted Zarya the most. Zarya was also around Zara and Zelda most of their day so Zelda would hopefully be the most comfortable around her.
Zarya knew she would be home later due to it but that was fine with her. Wednesday went by fairly quickly and before anyone knew it, it was twenty minutes before the late night council. Zarya was standing in the corner of Zelda's room, being intently stared at by Zelda. She did not approve of being put to sleep by anyone other than her mother, no matter how well she knew them, and Zarya knew she would have to get creative to make things work.
"Good Night Zelda! It's only one night in a long while, you understand right?" the queen asked sweetly.
"Oh of course. Good night Mom," Zelda replied, but her suspicious gaze did not move from 'Miss Zarya' as she called her.
As Zara walked past Zarya and out of the room, she whispered. "Good luck, and thank you," quietly and out of earshot from Zelda. Zarya simply smiled and bowed slightly.
"Good Luck with your, uh, council, your majesty."
It suddenly occurred to Zarya she had no clue what the meeting was about. The queen sensed this and decided to take the opportunity to tease her.
"I believe we are strongly considering raising taxes significantly."
Zara tried to keep a straight face, but when she saw Zarya's face of great shock she broke out giggling, "I jest, I actually have no clue what it's about. Ooooh, Rhoam hates when my forgetful self walks into these things completely unprepared. I just spend so much time with Zelda. She is going to have so many harsh responsibilities, especially with her great role with the upcoming calamity, and I want to guide and teach her myself," The Queen was suddenly very serious, her joking demeanor changed, to much more sorrowful state.
Zarya smiled encouragingly at Zara, "You will do just fine, I know it. And you should probably leave now so you're not late. I got this," Zarya chuckled as she looked back at little Zelda, whose big green eyes were still fixed on her.
Queen Zara's smile brightened once again, thanked Zarya one last time and started walking down the long hallway.
Zarya turned around to face little Zelda, who was still glaring at her. Zarya found it adorable, and a bit funny, and tried her best to hide her soft laughter.
"What's so funny?" Zelda questioned.
"You are. Don't think I haven't missed the looks you have been giving me," Zarya replied lightly, smiling softly at the princess. Zelda's face turned a bit red, and she smiled, a bit embarrassed that her glares were caught, because in her six year old mind, she thought she was being super sneaky.
"I'm sorry Miss Zarya."
"Don't be. I'm not upset, I honestly found it funny. So, how shall I put you to sleep, your majesty?" Zarya asked, as she walked over to Zelda's bed and sat down on it after Zelda nodded her approval.
Zelda couldn't help but giggle at being called 'your majesty.'
"I don't know" she said simply as she straightened her blue nightgown.
"Would you like me to read you a story?"
"No thanks, My mommy has read all the stories in this room to me before. Hmmm, oh I know! Could you play that one lullaby on the piano for me? I always feel sleepy after hearing you play it so well. Pleaaase?"
"I would love to, but there is no piano in your room, you know that."
"Well yeah, but there is one in that one room not far from mine. You know, that small music room with that squeaky door. It's near the library, you know what room I'm talking about right? You have played the piano for me and mommy there before."
Zarya sighed, "Zelda, it is a five minute walk, and someone might hear me play, and I'm supposed to be putting you to bed, not taking you to the small music room in the middle of the night. If we got caught, I might get in trouble."
"Well then we just don't get caught. I have an idea. We can be like, ninjas!" Zelda said excitedly, striking a goofy ninja pose. She hopped off her bed and walked over to one of her drawers and pulled out a small pair of comfy looking brown socks.
Zarya knew that this was going to be her best bet to put Zelda to sleep successfully, so she decided to simply play along. After all, she was curious about Zelda's plan.
She watched as Zelda put them on, and listened when she was told to take her shoes off so that all she had on her feet were her socks.
"So what's your plan to make it to the piano Zelda?"
"We use our ninja socks to slide through the hallways to the piano as quietly as possible!" Zelda explained excitedly, "Then you can play that lullaby and I'll go to sleep right after, I promise!"
Zarya broke out laughing. Zelda looked at her confused, "You don't like my plan?" she asked, looking a little hurt.
"No it's a great plan. It just reminded me of my family. We love sliding in our socks. Alright, looks like we have a plan. But you go right to bed afterwards. That's the deal."
"Deal! Thanks so much, this is going to be so much fun!" Zelda exclaimed excitedly.
"This will probably get me fired somehow," Zarya thought to herself, but aloud to Zelda said, "Alright let's go! Remember to keep quiet."
And with that the two started sliding and sneaking down the halls. It did not take that long till they reached the small room with the piano, since it was not far from Zelda's bedroom. The journey there was filled with Zelda giggling and Zarya praying to Hylia that no one was going near the music room that night.
When they finally arrived Zarya sighed in relief, "Thank the Goddess no one else is around here at this hour."
"Yeah, I mean what type of suspicious weirdos would be sneaking around this place at this time of night?"
"Well Zelda, that would be us."
The two started to laugh softly as they settled themselves on the piano bench.
"My mom would probably never do this with me," Zelda giggled. The very image of the Queen of all Hyrule sliding in her socks down the castle halls of night was very amusing.
"Well, your mother has a reputation that she doesn't want to ruin."
"What about your reputation?"
"I don't have one."
"Why not?"
"My husband ruined it for me."
Zarya positioned herself on the middle of the bench and Zelda plopped down next to her. She was already worn out from her long and exciting day. She then leaned her blonde head against Zarya. After they both were sure no one was near earshot and they were both settled on the long, well crafted piano bench, Zarya started to perform the lullaby.
It sounded something like this-

After Zarya finished playing Zelda's Lullaby, she looked down at the little princess who had fallen fast asleep next to her. She smiled and closed the piano lid softly so as to not wake her up. She lifted Zelda's small body and carried her down the castle halls to her bedroom. She laid her down in her bed and covered her with the well made and warm blankets. She then grabbed her shoes, put them on, and tiptoed out of the room closing the door softly behind her. When the door clicked shut, Zarya smiled and sighed. She started her walk out of the castle, and headed toward the horse stable where Milkshake was being kept. As she enjoyed her calming walk under the black night and stars, she wondered what Alvar was doing, and if he was already home.
