Chapter 4- Alvar's Eggs-pertice

Zarya's intentions of sleeping in as long as she could into the Saturday morning were a pipe dream, and she knew it. She was having a weird dream where she was laying in a field then suddenly a huge rock came crashing on her stomach. But when she jumped awake right as the boulder hit her, she found that the 'rock' was only Link jumping on her stomach trying to wake her up.

"Link! Why in Hylia's name are you up, and getting me up?! It's like, before 10:00 a.m. It's way too early," she groaned. She pushed him off her stomach.

"Aww come on Mom! The sun is up, so we should be up too!" Link said happily.

"No, we shouldn't. That's a rule that applies to week days only! When will you get that through your head?"

Link smiled, then shrugged and decided that if they wouldn't get up, he'd have to wait with them until they would get up. And Link knowing his parents, he knew that it would be awhile. So he snuggled in between them. Zarya rolled over to look at Alvar, who was still asleep and softly snoring.

"Calamity Ganon could awake, and he could still sleep through it," Zarya giggled to herself, then yawned. She closed her eyes and everything was quiet again. But the silence was very short lived and ironically Zarya was the one to break it.

"Gahhh! Great Farore Link! Move your feet! They're cold as ice!" she exclaimed.

"Sorry Mom, the floor was really cold when I walked over here," Link said.

"You technically were not supposed to walk over here in the first place."

Link smiled mischievously and placed his small, cold feet against his mother.

"Ugh! Fine! I give up! I have tomorrow morning to sleep in anyway. I'm up," Zarya stated in exasperation as she stood up and stepped out of bed, but her resolution was short-lived. As soon as she stood up, she jumped back into the bed.

"Ooh, you are right Link. The floor is freezing."

"Told you so."

"Oh hush. Here, while I try to find my socks, you wake up your father. Oh, and what do you want for breakfast?"

"Could we have pancakes please?!" Link asked excitedly.

"Yes, of course," Zarya smiled and leaned to softly hug Link before she got out of bed. She found her socks and resisted the temptation to start sliding around in them. She had a mission. Make pancakes and bacon.

As she started to heat up her cooking skillet, she could hear from downstairs Link jumping on poor Alvar and chanting 'wakey wakey'. She chuckled as she looked around her kitchen for the ingredients she needed. When she found them she placed them on the counter. Soon she heard two pairs of familiar footsteps trudge down the stairs, but one pair sounded much more excited. She turned around and smiled.

"Good Morning Alvar."

"Is it though?" her husband replied sleepily.

"Yes it is, even though the morning came earlier than we expected."

Both adults casted playful glares at Link, who ruffled his hair embarrassed, "Sorry."

Alvar laughed, "You're forgiven, but go check on Shadow and Milkshake and take care of them for the morning."

Link grabbed his small brown boots and walked out of the house. Alvar walked next to Zarya who was busy measuring flour, and wrapped his arms around her shoulders.

"Intriguing to think that these powdery ingredients will flour into pancakes."

"Alllllvar-"

"What's wrong sugar?"

"It's too early for this nonsense-"

"What? I'm just yolking around." Alvar did his best to shrug and look innocent but the smile that was forcing itself to his lips gave him away completely.

Zarya shrugged him off and turned around, doing her best to look as mad as possible and playfully glared at him.

"I don't know what that look is for. I'm cracking these jokes like eggs."

"Make one more bad pancake related joke, and you can make your own pancakes," Zarya threatened playfully.

"One could say, that puns are my eggs-pertice."

Alvar's smirk turned into full out laughter as he looked at Zarya, who wasn't sure if she should laugh, throw the flour she was holding at Alvar's face, or give up and go back to bed. Part of her wanted to try all three, and in that exact order. But she resisted, and tried to fight the smile that was slowly making its way to her face, but failed. She was regrettably bad at hiding her smile when she wanted to, especially if it was Alvar who made her smile.

Alvar looked at her and grinned, "You have no clue of how many more breakfast related puns I have."

"No, I can imagine. But that's for another morning. I would offer to make you some coffee, but clearly you don't need any sugar or caffeine this morning."

"Huh, I don't think I have any coffee puns-"

"Oh thank the Goddess'."

"But I'm sure I'll find some way to brew it."

"By Din, Nayru, and Farore, you are absolutely hopeless."

"I love you too."

Link finally walked back in the house and ended his parents' conversation. His light brown hair was partially covered in hay. He walked to his room and put on his favorite socks, hylian trousers that were covered in grass and dirt stains, and a light blue shirt. Then he brushed the hay out of his hair. As he walked back down stairs the aroma of cooking bacon hit his nose and it smelled great. His stomach growled as he asked, "When will breakfast be ready?"

Zarya turned around to answer his question, "That depends on how many pancakes I'm making per person."

Alvar and Link looked at each other and smiled. Link was the first to name a number, "three!"

Alvar looked at Link's smile and grinned, "A real soldier eats five pancakes, not three pancakes. That's more of a snack. I say five pancakes."

Zarya rolled her eyes at her husband's childishness and was about to object to any one getting 5 pancakes, but Link spoke before she did.

"Eight pancakes!" Link called out, competitively looking at his father.

"Ten!'

"Twelve!"

"Fourteen!'

Zarya had enough of the pointless conversation after eventually it got to the point where Link suggested forty-two pancakes.

"I hope you both know that I'm only making you both two," Zarya muttered under her breath, "Forty-two pancakes indeed."

Link and Alvar only laughed as a response and Zarya shortly joined them at the table and handed out the plates. The rest of the morning went by very quickly, and so did the weekend for that matter, and Monday appeared way too soon, as common tradition.

Come bright and early Monday morning, Link was sent off to join his small group of friends who also had parents who served under the Royal Family of Hyrule.

Alvar and Zarya did not send Link to school. Instead they taught him to read and write themselves, and they made great teachers. They also taught him the history of Hyrule, basic horsemanship, how to fight extremely well, and basic survival tricks. But Link was still so small and young, so he had much more to learn. But his swordsmanship always shown through. Zarya learned to play piano when she was very young hoping it might help her get a job. She also taught Link to play piano, and he loved it. He was very proud of his skill but hardly ever performed in front of people unless it was someone he knew very well or trusted. Link would get too nervous and scared and his hands would start to shake and he just couldn't play the piano right if he ever tried to perform in front of someone he didn't know, so he just didn't. But Link did have a favorite song to play, and that was "The Song of the Lost woods" or "Saria's Song" named after the ancient sage Saria who according to old Hyrule legend, assisted the Hero of Time long ago. That song was a favorite classic of his.

When Zarya saw that Link was gone for the day she walked to the stable at the side of the house where Alvar was saddling his black horse, Shadow. Zarya began bridling her own horse, Milkshake.

"I still don't understand why you named your horse Milkshake," Alvar remarked as he tightened Shadow's girth.

"Cause I love Milkshakes. Duh," Zarya giggled.

Alvar playfully rolled his eyes. "I guess it is a sweet name."

It was Zarya's turn to roll her eyes, "Well why did you name your horse Shadow? No one actually likes shadows. At least no one I know."

"Because it goes with his color and it sounds cool."

"Milkshakes are cooler than shadows. Figuratively and literally," Zarya laughed as she mounted her chestnut colored horse.

"I see what you did there," Alvar grinned as he jumped onto Shadow's saddle that was adorned with the Golden Hylian Crest, "Want to race to Hyrule Castle?"

"Oh, you're on!" Zarya shot back competitively.

And with that they both shot off riding as fast as they could towards the castle. They tore through the cool morning air under the new sun in Castle Town. The town was just waking up, and there were not two many awake yet to see the couple laughing and racing as fast as they could, and the few early risers who did happen to see them pass felt concerned about the people the Royal Family hired.

-This 20 minute timeskip is brought to you by this one egg I threw at the wall thinking it was a random ping pong ball-

"Ha! I win! Wait till everyone hears how the Trainer of the Hylian Army and King's personal guard got beat by the Queen's servant in a horse race!" Zarya taunted as she unbridled Milkshake.

Zarya had beat Alvar to the castle and now he had to listen to her rub it in his face while they unsaddled their horses in the royal stable. They would come back for them when Alvar was finished with training his soldiers for the day and Zarya was dismissed by Queen Zara for the remainder of the day. By the time Zarya was finished teasing Alvar they both had their horses all settled for the remainder of their work day. Alvar knew she was only joking around, so he took no offence in her jests.

"Well good luck with your soldiers Alvar, and have a great day! And don't let any of the other trainers or generals push you around. If they try to pick a fight with you just because you are who you are, just walk away please?" Zarya asked sweetly, but the concern in her voice was obvious.

She knew that Alvar was disliked and picked on due to his rank and low background. After all, it was her that tended to his wounds and bruises when he came home with marks that did not come from training or sparring.

"I'll try, I promise. You have a great day too," Alvar replied as he pulled Zarya into a warm hug. He smoothed her light brown that became messy thanks to the wind and her previous reckless race.

Zarya looked into his green eyes and smiled as she straightened his Royal Guard Cap. And with that they both went their separate ways. Zarya went to Queen Zara's chambers and Alvar headed to the training grounds to begin drilling the soldiers of Hyrule.
