Chapter 18- Shopping and Shenanigans

Link's smile grew with every step he took closer to the shopping area of Kakariko Village. He was just so excited for his new Sheikah clothes, and it really showed through the skip in his step. The day just seemed perfect. The sun shone clear in the sky, but not too bright. The cuccos strut by him, but not too close. Everything seemed precisely balanced. The village had a nice bustle to it, and the noise increased as the small family approached all the stores that Kakariko had to offer. Link felt the nice cool breeze that seemed as if it blew right from the refreshing Zora's Domain itself shift through his short, messy hair.

Cato and Akilah strolled a good few feet behind him hand in hand, at a slower pace than the young, energetic boy. They both wore peaceful smiles, appreciating the time together and the calming scenery. Akilah was used to being inside working on her technology projects, so Cato would often laugh as her poor eyes slowly adjusted to the bright sun. But she was very skilled at tripping people, so his laughter never lasted too long.

Impa quickly walked next to Link, explaining what Sheikah outfits were the most comfortable, which material was best to train in, and other useful facts to know, especially things like which cloth material got stains out the easiest. She was feeling in especially high spirits at the moment, although a cheerful day out would always have that effect on her. She had explored every inch of land in and around Kakariko, but she solemnly went to the shopping area of the village. Too many people yelling and calling out wares for her taste, although on special days like this she made an exception.

Now on any other occasion, Purah would be in a more cheerful mood, as she usually was. But not today. Today was the day she had to get glasses. And she had been dreading this day for a while. She dragged her feet by Akilah, complaining.

"Do I really need glasses? I think it's all a huge overreaction! My eyes are just fine!"

Akilah gave Purah a side glance.

"Alright they are sometimes fine! I don't want glasses! They are going to fall off my face, get into the way of my work, and just be a general pain!" Purah protested.

Akilah shook her head while smiling and gestured to the folded pair of glasses that were tucked in the collar of her shirt, "They are not all bad. You won't even have to wear them all the time. Only when you work with me in the laboratory, and when your eyesight feels sore or blurry. I'm sorry, but this is what happens to most Sheikah researchers, they work in dark rooms, they stare at their tech too long, and boom. Glasses."

"But my vision is just fineeee. I don't think I will even look good in glasses. I don't want to look like some Sheikah nerd!" Purah continued to whine.

Akilah rolled her eyes, "You have been complaining about your sore eyes for months, and now when we get you glasses you still complain? Honestly Purah. And people who wear glasses do not at all look like nerds. I wear glasses and I find them very stylish. You can pick the color, and put them up in your hair or fold them in the collar of your shirt like me. And if your eyes aren't feeling sore or blurry then take them off!"

Purah simply turned the other way and crossed her arms, grumbling to herself. Impa looked over her shoulder to glance at Purah who was still in a pout, and felt bad. She knew Purah was extremely nervous for the new upcoming change, so she decided to cheer her up. She turned around and started to walk backwards, hoping no one was in front of her. As soon as the two sisters made eye contact Impa stuck her tongue out. Purah bit the inside of her mouth, absolutely refusing to smile back. She had already decided she was in a bad mood.

Impa sighed, "Looks like I have to take drastic measures. Ugh, I'm going to regret this. But she's going to smile!"

Link watched in great curiosity as Impa put her fingers in an oddly specific arrangement, and took a deep breath.

"Hey Purah, look at me!"

Purah looked up stubbornly, with the full intent to not smile or give in to any positivity of any kind.

Impa smiled and cringed simultaneously, "Check it!"

Link had never seen Purah change moods so fast before in all the time he had known her.

"Oh. My. Hylia. Did you just check it?! THAT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER SEEN YOU DO THAT!" Purah shrieked, now gripping her sides. Her body shook with laughter. Akilah and Cato beamed and mouthed 'thank you' to Impa, grateful that Purah wasn't sulking any more. Purah ran over to Impa without a trace of former pout on her cheerful face. Purah grabbed Impa by her arm and started jumping up and down, cheering at Impa's 'accomplishment'.

Impa blushed with embarrassment, and avoided eye contact with anyone who looked her way to see what all the commotion was about, "Yeah yeah get your kicks in now. It was a one time thing."

"I'm so very proud of you," Purah giggled back.

Impa smiled and rolled her eyes, "Well at least you're not pouting anymore."

"Yeah Purah! Why are you so scared of glasses anyway?" Link asked innocently.

As Purah explained to her companions her anxieties of the upcoming change, Akilah and Cato still peacefully strolled behind the kids, keeping a loose eye on them.

Cato leaned over closer to Akilah, "You know what I'm just now realizing?"

"Lemme guess. You left your money at home?"

"Har har, very funny. Oh shoot wait a sec," Cato suddenly reached his hand in his pocket with a fearful expression, which disappeared when he felt his small satchel of rupees in his pocket, "Nope I did not," Cato said proudly, but his proud state left when Akilah started to snicker at his absent minded self.

Akilah apologized with a teasing smile, "Alright I'm sorry, continue what you were saying."

"Well, since it's you who does all the clothes shopping with the girls, this is the first time I've ever gone clothes shopping with a kid."

Akilah laughed, earning a confused look from Cato, "What's so funny?"

"Does that scare you? Is the brave and fearless Cato afraid of clothes shopping with poor little Link? It's not a scary experience, in fact I think it will be good bonding time if anything. Some alone time with the guys, I think it might do you two some good," Akilah said, and pulled a strand of her long, Sheikah gray hair out of her thin face which had been blown about due to the summer-like breeze.

Cato sighed, "I never necessarily said I was scared, you know. But you are right. It'll be fun!"

"You need to be more confident Cato."

"I think you are right."

"I'm always right."

Impa, Purah, and Link had to slow down so as to stay in sight of their parents who had slowed their pace due to their conversation.

Link grinned, "I don't know if it's my excitement, or just the eventful day in general, but I don't think anything could ruin today."

Impa nudged Purah and gestured to a shorter Sheikah woman walking closer to them, "Except for her. Bet you she'll pick on mom for something new today."

Purah chuckled, "She looks like she has something on her mind too. As much as I can't stand her, watching her make a fool of herself never ceases to entertain."

Link raised his eyebrow out of confusion, "Who? That person? What is it with her?"

"That is Caren, and her and mom can't stand each other. She's just straight up jealous of her, the most successful Sheikah researcher in all of Kakariko, wife to the coolest Sheikah warrior, and mom to the most amazing girl in all of Hyrule!" Purah exclaimed, jokingly gesturing to herself after her last statement.

Impa laughed, "I feel like that explanation was more to compliment yourself then explaining to Link. But yes, she's quite the character. Her husband recently left her, I think he chose his group of ten cuccos over her or something."

Link winced, "That's tough luck."

Impa wasn't the only one to acknowledge Caren's presence, Akilah and Cato saw her as well. Akilah was a hard person to annoy, she was a very patient woman, although Caren made her mad if she even saw her. She did her best to avoid eye contact, earning a few chuckles from Cato. But nonetheless, Caren walked up to her to strike a nerve and a conversation.

"Oh why hello Akilah! What are you doing here?" Caren asked, fake kindness dripping from her words.

"Well, for starters I live here," Akilah responded calmly. Cato gave her a discreet elbow to watch her sarcasm, gaining soft laughter from Impa, Purah, and Link who had tuned into the conversation.

Caren decided she would ignore the comeback, so looked around to find something to inspire her to add on to the unnecessary exchange. Her eyes darted around her, until her gaze met Link.

"My my Akliah, you never told me you had a third child," Caren said slyly.

Akilah was visibly taken aback by the bold and sudden statement, "Actually he's not-"

"And excuse my bluntness, but I can't help but notice his hair color isn't the same as Cato's," Caren sneered.

Impa gasped, Purah's mouth dropped, Link's eyes had never been wider. Cato, who had been spaced out waiting for the conversation to end, was now paying perfect attention.

Akilah clenched her fists, "Why you little bi- I'll have you know that that is Link, son of Alvar and Zarya, some of the greatest Hylian heroes of our time, who passed in service of our land! Can't you go annoy someone else with your petty stupidity?! Go trace a leaf or something! Hylia!"

With that, a very flustered and angry Akilah stomped off, continuing her trek to the center of Kakariko village. Cato ran off to catch up with her, but not without giving a nasty glare to Caren. The three kids ran to go catch up with the adults, after recovering from their laughing fit.

Akliah swore under her breath, "The nerve, I can't believe her. The average body has over seven trillion nerves and she gets on every single one of them."

Cato chuckled, "She just wanted a reaction from you, don't let it get to your head. Well moving on from that, this is our stop. Us guys will head into here, and you girls know where you are going."

Cato walked into one of the stores, followed by Link who waved and wished Purah goodluck before heading in after him. Link felt the atmosphere of the hot summer air vanish as he walked into the cool and shady store. The wooden floors were cleanly swept, and the whole store looked very tidy. He looked around at the racks of clothes, most colored gray, dark blue, or black. Link was impressed with all the variety, different sizes, styles, and cloth. Cato walked up to the front desk where a young Sheikah woman sat. She had a pleasant smile and recognised Cato immediately.

"Why hello Cato! Long time no see!"

"Hey Claree, how have you been doing?"

"Oh, business as usual. Nothing much to report, make clothes, sell clothes. Same old stuff. And would you look at that. If it isn't the little Hylian boy who has come to live with us Sheikah in Kakariko! Link right?"

Link respectfully nodded, "Yes ma'am."

"Oooh, such manners. I like you already! Well I hope readjusting to life here isn't too hard. I was very sorry to hear about your parents though, they were great people, truly. But back to business, I'd hate to kill the mood. My guess is that you have come for a change in wardrobe, am I right?"

Cato nodded his head, "That's right. If you could point us toward the section for younger boys that would be most helpful."

Claree smiled, "But of course. I personally selected each and every item in here using my flawless fashion sense. It's all highly recommended. Each item has its own unique features and abilities, so take a good look!" She stopped tapping her pencil on her desk to point her customers in the direction of the rack fitting their request. Link and Cato walked off after thanking her and started to go through the different assorted clothing items, all neatly hung and folded. Cato took certain pairs of pants and shirts off tables and held them up to Link, figuring out his size. He picked a total of four outfits, one for training, playing outside, sleeping, and an extra for any occasion. After he finished the selection, he tossed Claree a silver rupee before walking out with Link, who looked eager as ever to try on his new stuff.

"Thank you so, so much Mr. Cato!"

"Ah don't mention it Link, it's no big deal. You'll look like a regular Sheikah, minus actually being Sheikah."

Link and Cato met up with Akilah, Impa, and Purah, then headed home. It was a short walk, and they were in no rush. As the day progressed into later hours, the air became cooler and the sunlight seemed dimmed. The noise of a previously bustling village slowly died out as people went along with their day, preparing for dinner or simply to head home from their stores. It was a growing silence that was appreciated by the small family, making their walk more serene and peaceful. The red Sheikah talismans blew from their stings in the evening wind, and the candles lit around the goddess statue at the center of the village flickered due to the breeze.

When inside, Link ran straight into his room to try on every single piece of clothing he got. He proudly showed off his outfits to his new 'big sisters' who approved of each one. Link wasn't used to the attention, as he was an only child for the first eleven years of his life. Having two other kids to live with was a change, but one he liked. Sure it was louder, there was less space, and more people to get on your nerves, but he still loved them. He learned more of sibling interaction with every passing day. For instance, he thought siblings would call each other 'sis' or 'sister'. Instead he found that he was very much mistaken. He found Impa and Purah addressing each other a bit more, well, playfully.

"Hey dork!"

"I am not a dork!"

"Yeah you are you nerd, and Mom wants you."

But it was exchanges like that that always made the atmosphere of the house more entertaining.

Link wasn't the only one adjusting to a change, Purah getting into the habit of wearing her new pair of glasses was a challenge. When she came home, Purah went to a mirror for fifteen minutes, looking at her reflection, glasses on, glasses off. Glasses up in her short hair, glasses folded in the collar of her shirt. She was feeling flustered, she couldn't decide whether or not they looked good on her. Impa popped in, curious to see what she was up to. When she saw Purah sigh and take them off for the fiftieth time, she made her presence known.

"Hey uh, how is it going?"

"I don't know. I don't think they look good on me to be honest."

"What in blue blazes do you mean! You look great! You're just being self conscious, that's all. Here look, wear them just so, and when you don't need them, just put them up in your hair like that! You look just fine, so don't say otherwise again."

Purah's face visibly brightened, "You think so?"

Impa laughed, "I know so. And hey, if some one ever asks some stupid question like 'why do you have glasses' you can make up some really cool story!"

Purah tilted her head, "What do you mean by that?"

Impa cleared her throat and took on the most serious expression she could muster, "Well there I was, researching in the lab. It was a dark and stormy night, and I was researching research, stuff. And then one of the guardian sheikah robot things started to malfunction! It shot me in the eyes with its lazer, and since I hadn't finished installing it's lazer, it only damaged my eyesight! And then I grabbed a metal pole to finish it off-"

"Alright alright I get your point! Although I doubt anyone would believe such a tall tale," Purah snickered.

"So you're good?" Impa asked.

"Haha, yeah I'm good, thanks."

Later that evening, Cato and Akilah were making dinner, and Link, Purah and Impa were sprawled out on the living room floor. Link was caught up in a book, but kept getting snapped back in the real world due to the noise of Impa who was trying to read, but was constantly interrupted by Purah who kept tickling her sides.

"Oh my goodness! Can you just not! You're so annoying!"

"Make me stop you loser!"

Link rolled his eyes and went into his bedroom to read instead. He laid out on his bed and went back into his zone, happily absorbed in the good story. But after two minutes of peace and quiet-

Purah popped her head into his room, "Hey Link what are you doing in here?"

"What!?"

Getting used to siblings turned out to be harder than he thought.
