Chapter 17- Gradual Adjustment

Link readjusting to living like a Shiekah wasn't as hard as he first anticipated. After a week of living in Kakariko he came to love his new home. He was much more quiet than usual, and was very gloomy. He was still mourning, and his new family completely understood. Cato and Akilah put Impa and Purah in charge of cheering him up, but soon learned that leaving him to himself and letting him come out of his shell on his own was the best route. Link was never close to Impa and Purah's loving parents, but he came to love them and learn more of them with each passing day.

He was given the guest room as his new bedroom. Much to Impa's disappointment. Link remembered very clearly when his new room was announced.

"So mom, where will Linky sleep?" Purah asked curiously.

Before Akilah had a chance to answer Impa spoke up, "What if I take the guest room and Link moves in with Purah? Now before you shoot this idea down let's consider it for a sec-"

Akilah laughed, "Absolutely heckin not Impa. Link will be taking the guest room. How does that sound to you Link?"

Link gave her a grateful look, "That's just fine with me. Thank you."

Akilah nodded, "Don't even mention it. We are all very glad to have you here with us."

As Akilah walked out of the room Purah elbowed Impa, "Ha! You thought you could get rid of me now did ya? You can't get rid of me that easily!"

Impa rolled her eyes and gave Purah a sore look before walking away, only to be followed by her sister to be further teased.

It didn't take Link too long to unpack his belongings, as there were very few of them. He pondered how long his few Hylian clothing outfits would last him. His room was smaller, but to one young 11 year old it was a very appealing size. A small, red Sheikah talisman was tied to the doorknob. A small bed was put against the wall, and there was a wooden desk with a candle on top of it and a wooden chair to go with it. There was a narrow closet, which Link put his favorite weapons in and decided that he would store all of his larger belongings such as his swords and bows in there. He neatly folded and put away his few clothing articles in the medium sized drawer. A clean mirror hung over the desk, but Link's favorite part of the room was the window that gave him a clear view of the village. He was happy to find that someone already put up blinds to go with it. He admired the royal blue colored cloth used for the blinds as he lightly ran his fingers over the soft material.

Link took out his father's royal guard cap and his mother's Hylian crest necklace and placed them gently on the blue covers of his new bed and pondered where to put his treasured items. He could feel himself grow teary and shaky just looking at them. He decided to put them on top of his drawer. He felt they were safest there, on a high point where he could always see them.

Link was suddenly snapped out of his sad trace by a knock on the door which he had left open. He turned around to see Cato standing outside the doorway. Cato wore a gentle smile and moved his short, messy gray hair out of his face with one hand, while the other hand held something behind his back, "Hey buddy, do you mind if I come in?"

Link managed a smile and nodded his head yes.

"Great. I see you moved in quickly, although I suppose you didn't have too much to unpack. Don't worry about not having enough clothes, I'll take you clothes shopping soon. It'll be fun! You'll be dressed in regular Sheikah clothing though, I hope you don't mind. That's all our shops carry."

Link's face brightened considerably, much to Cato's relief, "Oh thank you! I was worried about that honestly. I won't mind wearing Sheikah style clothes, I've always kinda wanted to try them out!"

Cato grinned, "I'm glad to hear it. Well anyway I brought you a little something to remind you of your old home," Cato revealed what he was hiding behind his back.

Link gasped as he took into his hands the beautiful painted picture. It was a portrait of a view of Hyrule field. The blue sky littered with puffy white clouds and finished with a shining sun. The lush field was filled with Hylian flowers and tall trees. A family of deer seemed to chew at the grass and even birds were painted on the trees. The Hyrule Castle was in the background, brick, banners and all. It was his old home.

"It's b-beautiful. Th-thank you Cato," Link stuttered. He was very touched at the kind gesture. It did remind him of his original home. As he was still shaken and still healing, he couldn't help but feel emotional.

Cato smiled, "Akilah and I thought you might appreciate it. It's not much, but it'll remind you of home, and maybe you won't feel so homesick. But no matter it's a gorgeous piece of artwork."

Link sniffed and nodded, "I love it. It does bring a touch of home in the room. Maybe we could hang it on the wall by the window?"

"That was just where I was thinking we could hang it. I left the hammer and nail outside your room. I figured it would ruin the surprise if I randomly walked in your room holding a hammer and nail. Actually that would be sort of suspicious," Cato chuckled.

Link laughed softly, "Yes I suppose it would."

Together Link and Cato hung the picture on the wall. Cato held the picture in place and let Link hammer in the nail. After they finished they both backed up to see the final image.

"I don't think we did that bad, in fact it looks perfectly straight!" Cato complimented. "Thanks for your help. I think it definitely brightens up the room."

Link turned to him and smiled. He felt considerably cheered up, and was beginning to really like his new "adoptive" parents. They would never replace Alvar and Zarya, but in his freshly formed opinion they were the next best set of parents in all of Hyrule.

Cato smiled back and looked around the room to see how Link set it up. He couldn't help but notice how organized it seemed, a place for everything and everything in its place. As his eyes traveled across the room he looked at Link's drawer and his gaze fell upon Alvar's royal guard hat and Zarya's Hylian crest necklace. He sighed and looked at them longingly, wishing their owners were still alive. Link wondered why cheerful Cato had gone so silent, but looked to where he was faced and was able to find the answer to his question. Link went silent as well as he looked at his parents belongings along with Cato.

Link knew moving on would be difficult, but he never anticipated how hard it would really be. He never really realized how the loss of loved ones could be so life changing and devastating to so many people and have such an effect on a community.

But a few weeks have passed since then. With every passing day Link felt himself looking back at his parents with love and happiness, instead of looking back filled with feelings of sadness and regret. It got easier to talk about his parents without crying, instead he would find himself laughing and smiling, looking back on them fondly. He would get emotional and cry over their loss occasionally, but he found as time passed the wound of their loss healed. He knew that the wound would never fully close, but it would get better as he adjusted.

Link slowly blinked and let his eyes adjust to the sun light that filtered through his bedroom window. He stared at the ceiling, debating whether or not getting up was really worth the trouble. He smiled in spite of his unwillingness to start the day. He looked over his covers as he heard footsteps walk into his bedroom. He pretended to be asleep when he saw it was Impa with her arms cross, for he knew her intentions.

"Link honestly it's no use to pretend, I know darn well you're fake sleeping. Get your Hylian butt out of bed right now," Impa chuckled.

Link opened his eyes and smiled, "You know I think you should try sleeping in one day Impa, I think it would do you some good."

"Ha, I wish I could. It's against my Sheikah morals. I have a morning run and it wakes me up well enough. Now are you getting up or not?"

Link heaved a sleepy sounding sigh, "I don't know Impa, I have earned the blankets trust and I fear that if I leave them now I might lose their trust."

Impa giggled, "You'll miss breakfast."

Link threw the covers off and jumped right out of bed, "Good Morning! I'm up, I'm up! Your dad makes a really good omelette and it would be a shame to miss it!"

Impa walked out of the room and shut the door behind her, satisfied to see Link was invigorated to finally start the day. It was a little over a month since he had come to live in the new household, and he was getting used to the new lifestyle faultlessly. Impa patiently waited outside Link's bedroom so she could walk downstairs with him. Link slipped into a clean shirt, ignoring the fact it was showing signs of being overworn and put on a pair of grass stained Hylian trousers. He combed his unruly hair to his liking and tapped his father's royal guard cap as well as lightly fingered his mother's necklace for good luck before heading out of his bedroom.

When Link opened the door, Impa smiled, nodded and started to walk down the hallway. Link lighty skipped next to her, feeling remarkably cheerful. He had a feeling today was going to be a good one.

"So Impa, why do you come to wake me up in the mornings? Since you have that morning run of yours, why don't you just have Purah drag me out of bed each morning?"

Impa laughed, "Trust me, starting your day with Purah isn't a great start to a morning. I'm simply doing you a favor. As her roommate, I would know."

"Oh she can't be that bad. I bet deep down you don't mind sharing a room with her," Link gave Impa a sly look. He couldn't help but be amused when the two sisters were constantly at each other's throats, but he would call out the fact that they didn't really mind each other as they both pretended.

Impa only gave Link a sly look back in response. Link followed Impa in the kitchen, which smelled like tea and toast. Cato stood over two plates, adding the final touches to the breakfast dishes. Akilah and Purah were seated next to each other at the table, both looking over a paper containing a rough sketch for some Sheikah technology project they were working on. Akilah sipped her morning coffee, listening to Purah's opinion between her bites of toast.

Cato was the first to notice the arrival of Link and Impa, "Good Morning Link! Thanks for bringing him down for breakfast Impa."

"Good Morning Mr. Cato!" Link responded cheerfully. He plopped down in the chair across from Purah and Impa took the seat next to Link across from her mother. Akilah and Purah were snapped out of their work by the noise of the shuffling chairs. They both looked up simultaneously at the new arrivals to the table.

"How did you sleep last night Link?" Akilah asked kindly, smiling brightly. Link wondered how one could smile so pleasantly so early in the morning. He also didn't understand how her long, beautiful, gray hair was already so straight and combed. His hair was much shorter and was a mess.

"I slept alright thanks," Link said in a distracted tone of voice, as he tried to get a good look at the paper in front of Akilah and Purah. Purah noticed his curiosity so she tilted her page in Link's direction so he could get a look at it, being careful that none of the jelly on her toast fell on the scroll in the process.

Impa let her curiosity get the best of her so she inspected the paper along with Link, "Is that some blueprint for some test with the Sheikah slate or something?"

Purah laughed, "Not even close. Mom was doing some research on the mechanics behind a stalker guardian's legs."

Impa chuckled, "I still think the proper terminology for those things should be robotic Sheikah spiders."

Purah glared at Impa, for she couldn't stand when Impa made different names for the tech she hardly knew a thing about in comparison to Purah's knowledge. Impa noticed the reaction she was getting so cheekily continued, "Or what about, blasting killer spiders? I kinda like the sound of, hmm, clanky eight legged terrors."

Link tried to stifle his growing laugh, a precaution which Cato didn't care to take. As much as Akilah was enthusiastic about her technological work but she also didn't mind a good natured jest, but her daughter who seemed to have no room for kidding when it came to her passionate subject never failed to amuse her.

Purah decided to hold her tongue so she didn't give Impa the satisfaction of a proper reaction. Instead she settled for angrily eating the remainder of her toast.

Cato set a breakfast omelette in front of Impa and Link then sat down next to Akilah with his cup of morning tea. He scanned over the paper pretending to look interested to impress his wife, while in reality he had no clue as to what any of the formulas or notes scribbled on the scroll meant.

Akilah gave him a knowing look, "Appreciating the mathematical approach of the physics behind the transportation installments of the guardians I see, hmm Cato?"

Cato choked on his tea, "I'm sorry, but what the frickle frackle is that supposed to mean?"

Akilah placed her head against Cato's shoulder and started to laugh, "The laser spider legs look pretty don't they Cato? That's what it means, just in a wording your mind can comprehend."

Cato gave her a pretend hurt look, "You wound me."

Akilah stood up with a smile and pecked Cato's cheek, "I'm teasing you, you're just funny."

Akilah put away her notes in a safe place, hoping she would remember where she placed them later on. Cato looked over at the three kids who were observing the couples interactions with great interest, but they immediately looked down at the floor and pretended to be oblivious. When everyone finished their breakfast they neatly placed their dishes away to be cleaned later.

"So Dad, any plans for the day?" Purah asked in a sing-song tone of voice.

"Actually yes, I do have some plans for the day," Cato responded, sounding suddenly excited. Everyone gathered around Cato, intrigued as to what he had in mind.

When he saw he had everyone's attention he continued his explanation, "Well since it's Saturday, I was thinking it might be a good day for some errands. Link, we haven't gotten you those new clothes have we? I can see yours need to be replaced. They will be Sheikah styled mind you, but you said you were looking forward to it so we should have no problems! I think today would be the perfect day to go clothes shopping. You girls can come along and run your own errands, but I think it would be nice to go out together for a day, don't you all think?"

Link smiled and felt his ear twitch in his own excitement. He had been looking forward to this for a while. Link always wanted to try on some Sheikah clothing, as the outfits always looked so breezy and comfortable. Impa grinned eagerly, and Purah started to jump around in her own excitement. The small family hardly visited the market and shopping center in Kakariko unless it was really needed, so it was truly an occasion.

"Oh I love that idea! It's about time we got poor Link some new clothes anyway. It's a beautiful day outside as well, nothing but sunshine. I think walking around for the day might do me some good anyway," Akilah added. Impa and Purah shook their heads vigorously, already inching towards the door.

"Well then I don't know what we're waiting for," Cato laughed. With that, the three kids went sprinting out the door, hardly remembering to grab their shoes.

Impa and Link felt suddenly energetic so the two started to perform somersaults and flips in the soft morning grass while waiting for the parents to come outside. Kakariko village was coming alive as the morning hours changed to midday. Cuccos strutted around, pecking at the grass, and young children ran about playing tag. Various adults walked around, some cleaning, others just taking a nice stroll around the scenic town. The sun was shining over the Necluda Mountain, and was accompanied by a nice cool breeze that seemed to drift from the refreshing Lanayru region itself.

Purah watched her sibling's athletic antics saltily with her arms crossed, knowing they were just being showoffs for the fun of it. She felt some comfort knowing that what she lacked in physique she made up for by being much smarter than her companions, but she couldn't help but feel a tad bit left out.

"Hey uh, how do you guys do that stuff?" Purah asked meekly.

"Oh it just takes practice really. Once you get the movements down it's a piece of cake, really! Here come here let me show you," Impa offered willingly. Purah's face brightened as she walked over to her sister.

"Well for a somersault you put your hands in a position just so, then you take some steps for momentum, put your hands out and kinda lean toward the ground and carry your legs straight up in the air. Then you have to stick your landing, or you can keep going and make as many rotations as you can! Try it!" Impa encouraged.

"I'll try, I guess," Purah said shakily, clearly very unsure of herself. Link and Impa stood next to her, both wearing encouraging smiles, both sharing the secret hope that she fell in the grass. Purah tried her best to copy the hand position Impa showed her, backed up and took in a deep breath, took some fast steps forward to gain momentum, put all her weight on her arms, and fell face forward in the dew covered grass.

Impa and Link stood next to her laughing their heads off, and Purah laughed along in spite of herself.

Impa felt weak from the laughter that shook through her body but walked up to Purah and offered her hand to her sister to get her off the ground, "My Hylia that's the funniest thing I've seen all day!"

"Check it!"

"You know what, never mind. You can stand up on your own."

At this point Cato and Akilah walked out of their house hand in hand, and looked at the scene outside their front door. Purah practically rolling on the grass laughing, Link still cracking up next to her, and Impa holding her sides.

Akilah rolled her eyes, "We left them alone for five minutes to wait outside. Five. Minutes."
