Chapter 11- A Journey to Kakariko
"Zarya! Am I healed yet?"
"No! You're not healed yet and if you ask me one more time today I swear to Hylia I'm personally moving you and your couch outside!"
Alvar and Link snickered from the living room at Zarya's flustered reaction. It was seven days in their long overdue break, and Alvar was getting restless. Thanks to Zarya's dedication his state had improved greatly. The color had returned to his face and many of his cuts and wounds had turned to scars or disappeared completely. He could walk much better, and the bruises on his face had faded away. Although he was healed up for the most part, Zarya was taking no chances. She wanted him to have one more day to make sure, and Alvar had been constantly asking her throughout the week if he was healed yet to simply poke fun at her.
Zarya forbade him any training of any kind, unless he was helping Link practice. Since both his parents were at home, Link enjoyed the extra attention. He loved having his daily school lesson, piano lesson, and training season with his father all in one day. On some occasions, one of his parents would be too busy or tired on certain days, and he'd have to go without one of his lessons or skip a training session for the day. But with them both at home he was able to complete a lot more, and loved every second of it. His father also appreciated having the chance to hone in on Link's great skill and talent, which was greatly improving with every passing week.
Since she had finished all her daily chores Zarya decided she would check and clean Alvar's bandages. She brought her supplies over to him and started unwrapping the white cloth around his legs. Alvar watched her work with his usual curiosity.
"Have you gotten a letter back from Cato or Akilah yet?" he asked hopefully. Now the truth was that Zarya had gotten a letter back the day before, but she never told him about it because she knew that it would only make Alvar more excited and restless. But she never did open it up, Zarya wanted to wait for Alvar to be fully healed, and to be the one to read it first.
"That answer depends on how healed you appear today," she replied in a teasing tone of voice. Alvar looked at her with great eagerness.
"Wait a minute. Oh Zarya, you got the response letter from them already didn't you?"
Zarya looked up to him and playfully shrugged, but looked back down at the bandages she was unraveling to hide her growing smile.
"Well Hylia seemed to have smiled down on you my dear hylian hot mess, because I deem you officially recovered and healed!" Zarya exclaimed proudly as she finished taking off the last of the bandages Alvar wore. He inspected his previous wounds and grinned.
"You truly do work wonders. You know, if you ever get fired from being the queen's personal servant, you should most definitely become a nurse for the Hylian knights' force," Alvar declared as he pulled Zarya into a hug. Zarya blushed and tried to escape, but to no avail.
"Well, wouldn't you like to read the letter?" Zarya questioned, still trying to get out of Alvar's embrace. He grinned, and eagerly nodded his head.
"Hey Link, where are you? Would you like to come and hear about the letter your mother got from our friends in Kakariko?" Alvar called out. A few seconds after, Link came running in from his room, where he was previously sharpening one of his wooden sparring swords. He tripped over his own feet in his rush, but quickly bounced back up.
"They sent a letter back already? What's it say? What's it say? Can we visit them?" Link exclaimed excitedly. His parents grinned at his enthusiasm.
Zarya handed Alvar the white envelope from her trouser pocket and Alvar opened the envelope that contained two pieces of paper. One was covered in neat, formal handwriting on both sides of the page, while the second paper was clearly meant for Link, written by little Impa and Purah, with much messier handwriting, complete with the drawn picture of a Sheikah made guardian on the back. Alvar handed the second letter to Link telling him it was for him from Purah and Impa. Link eagerly grabbed the paper and sat down on one of the chairs of the living room to read it.
Zarya stood on the points of her toes so she could look over Alvar's shoulder as he read the letter silently to himself. Zarya grinned as Alvar's smile grew as he went through the note. When he finished reading it he neatly folded it back into its cover and turned around back at Zarya, who was looking at him hopefully.
"Well, don't keep me in suspense any longer! What did they say?"
"Well let me sum it up for you. They said they are doing just fine, but have so much they want to tell us in person. Cato and Akilah wrote that they would be overjoyed if we all paid them a long overdue visit. They stated that they are currently taking things a bit easy, because of all the work and research they have completed recently, so now would be a perfect time for us to drop by for a week or so. They finished by telling us that they are eagerly awaiting our arrival."
"Oh that's great news! Well looks like we're taking a vacation to Kakariko Village. I think, if we started preparing today, and finished packing up, preparing, and tying up any other loose ends tomorrow, we could set off the day after tomorrow at the earliest," Zarya mused aloud. Alvar nodded his head in agreement. Then they both glanced over to Link, who didn't appear to have heard a word they said, as he looked very excited over his note.
"What does your letter say, Link?" Zarya asked sweetly. Her question seemed to snap Link out of space, because he suddenly jolted upright at her query.
"It was a short note, but it's always great to hear from them! Impa wrote that she was excited to see me soon, and that when we visit I should bring some of my sparring weapons, because she would love to practice and train with me as we usually do. Impa also said she has learned some new Sheikah fighting tricks that she would love to show me. Purah wrote that she also couldn't wait to see me, and to tell me about all the great things she has learned about since she last saw me. Look! She even drew me this picture of a guardian!" Link said happily as he presented the drawing to his parents.
Zarya smiled and awed over the picture and Alvar pretended to study the drawing with deep interest.
"So can we go visit them please? Can we go to Kakariko Village? Dad has to be better by now, right?" Link asked quickly, each question directly following the other. Alvar and Zarya beamed at Link's eagerness.
"My my, so many questions. And the answer to all of them is yes. Your father is finally healed, so we can start preparations for our journey today," Zarya replied.
Link jumped up in the air, "Yes! We're going to Kakarico!"

The small family decided to set up their small camp for the night under a large Hylian oak tree. They had just finished supper, and Alvar had spread a blanket out under the starry night. He and Zarya laid comfortably next to each other, both facing the sky. Zarya laid her head on one of Alvar's strong arms, and the other Alvar was using to point out different stars and constellations to Link, who was snuggled against his side.
Link always loved the night sky, especially when the full white moon was out, accompanied by all the stars that littered the sky. In his opinion, it was even better when the sky was clear without clouds, so one could truly appreciate the shining stars. As he listened to his father's stories and ways of how one could navigate only using the night sky, he was mesmerized by the purple-blue aura that seemed to come from the heavens above.
Alvar pointed to a particular star that seemed to have a red glow to it, "And that star leads one straight to the Eldin Region of Hyrule. Every hylian soldier can tell it by it's faint red glow. It's easy to remember where it leads you, due to its color and the fact that the Eldin Region is very red," Alvar relayed.
Link nodded in recognition, "Thanks dad. That one is easy to remember, and I won't forget it."
Alvar was quite content that Link was eagerly taking in the information, for he was quite sure he would use it often, "I'm glad to hear it. The night sky can be used as a map, as long as one knows how to read it."
Zarya, who had stayed quiet for the majority of the conversation and was content to just listen and enjoy the scenery, decided to add her own share of a legend of the skies of Hyrule.
"Did you know Link, that there is another civilization that lives in the skies above us?"
Link's ears perked up at the mention of a new tale, and an enticing one at that. "Wait, there is another world in the skies?"
Zarya nodded, "That's right. I know you have heard of the adventures of the first Link and Zelda, the famous heroes of the skies. The first incarnation of Hylia reborn, and her chosen hero. You know they grew up in the land of the skies called 'Skyloft', but came down to 'The Surface' as they first called Hyrule thousands of years ago after they sealed away Demise."
Zarya breathed in and smiled as she continued talking, "Legend goes, that after all that had happened on 'The Surface' the two heros settled in their new home, fell in love, married, and started a family of their own. But not everyone from Skyloft decided to move, some chose to stay in their home in the skies. So who is to say they aren't still there? I believe that high in the skies, the later generation are still up there, gliding around the clouds on top of their Loftwings."
"Wow, I never thought of that. I bet your right mom! I think they are still up there too!" Link exclaimed, fascinated by the thought.
After that all went quiet and soon Link nodded off to sleep, tired from all the traveling and walking. Zarya carefully lifted him up and placed him in his makeshift sleeping bag. She made sure it wasn't too close to the small campfire Alvar had built earlier, but near enough to keep him warm throughout the chilly night. She grabbed another, larger blanket for herself from one of the bags leaned against the trunk of the tree because she was feeling a bit cold herself. Then she joined Alvar back on the blanket stretched under the starry night.
The two stayed silent, enjoying each other's company and the peaceful serenity. Zarya was busy admiring the stars and trying to mentally recall their names and where they lead. Alvar was focused on the stars, but he had something else star related on his mind.
"Hey Zarya, isn't STAR-TLING of how much we don't know about the sky?"
Zarya was grateful to the dark night for hiding her smile for her, but Alvar knew her well enough to know she was. "That's not funny, what is startling is your inability to actually make decent jokes. And plus I was enjoying the silence," Zarya playfully whined.
Alvar grinned mischievously, "Alright for STAR-TERS, I'm hilarious and you know it. Don't think I don't know you're smiling. Second off, don't STAR-T to lecturing me on jokes when you can do no better. My puns are the STAR of this conversation."
Zarya rolled over so she was facing him and glared, although she wasn't really mad. Alvar knew she wasn't really upset, so he decided to continue pushing her patience.
"What's that glare for? What, are my jokes STAR-TING to annoy you?"
Zarya goaned, "Yes, yes they are."
But despite it all, Zarya started to chuckle softly in spite of herself. Alvar joined her, and their soft chuckling became laughter. But eventually Zarya told Alvar to stop being so loud, or else they might wake up Link, who had managed to stay asleep all the while. When they quieted down, Zarya went back to leaning her head on Alvar's arm and enjoying the scenery and silence the night sky had to offer.
When the sun finally rose over the Hebra mountains, the small family was already up and had packed up their little camp and supplies. They had made a meager breakfast, for they were excited to get to Kakariko Village as soon as they could. They set off for their journey and made great time, for they were accustomed to traveling.
At the midday sun, they finally arrived at the entrance of the village, and stopped to admire the wooden banisters decorated with red Sheikah talismans. As they observed the little quiet, peaceful village, they noticed two small Skiekah girls racing towards them, one quite taller than the other with longer Sheikah gray hair. Her sister, much shorter and slower, with shorter hair, in more of a bob hairstyle.
Link smiled and gasped, "Impa! Purah!"
And with that he started to run towards them with the same overjoyed enthusiasm.
