Chapter 1- The End of a Hard Week
"You requested my presence, your majesty?"
The captain and trainer of the Hylian army, and the King's personal guard stood at attention before the king of Hyrule, smiling. He always enjoyed talking to the king of Hyrule. The King had a habit of talking much more comfortably and casually to his personal guard. They were very close friends; and the king trusted the captain with his life.
The king smiled back, "No need to be so formal Alvar, relax a bit. You just finished training for the week anyway."
Alvar relaxed his shoulders and put his hand down, which was at salute a moment ago.
"Speaking of, how are my soldiers doing with their training?" the king asked. He was sitting behind his desk at his study, which was littered with various regal documents.
"Oh, they are doing great Rhoam, their archery has greatly improved since last month, if I do say so myself. They must have a great trainer." Alvar ruffled his messy, dark brown hair and couldn't help but chuckle at his own bad joke, which the king joined him in. Alvar gently reminded the king of why he wanted his presence in the first place.
"Oh yes, I wanted to tell you that I will be traveling to Zora's Domain next weekend to discuss some matters there with the Zora King, and naturally you will escort me. And Zara will be coming with me, so you best let your wife know. I just wanted to let you know so your family would have a good week to prepare for the journey."
Alvar smiled at the mention of his wife, and the consideration of the king. Alvar's wife's name was Zarya, and she was the head attendant and dear friend to the queen of hyrule, Zara.
"Of course Rhoam, thank you for letting me know ahead of time. Since we're both going, I'll bring my son as well."
The king's blue eyes sparked in the afternoon sun as he returned his guard's warm smile, "How is your son doing?"
Alvar's smile grew, "Little Link is doing just fine; mischievous, but fine."
He laughed and told the king about the wooden spider Link managed to carve, paint black, and constantly place it in random places just to scare his mother, who had an intense fear of spiders.
Rhoam burst out laughing heartily, "My Zelda is similar, she has a childish love of frogs; strange, I know. Sometimes she comes back from the castle garden with a frog in one of her pockets. She almost gives my queen a heart attack sometimes." The two friends continued to laugh at the mischief of their children, then said their farewells.
Alvar walked out of the castle and into Castle Town. He straightened his royal guard uniform that he proudly wore. He breathed in the clean spring air, and looked around him. There were merchants selling random items such as clothing, arrows, food, ingredients, and much more. The sellers were calling out the names of their products hoping to attract customers. Children of different ages were running in the town square, playing tag and hide and seek. The crowd mostly consisted of Hylians, but there were also various Zora, Rito, Goron, Shiekah, and even Gerudo in the castle town as well. Alvar waved at some of his soldiers he recognized walking home. He looked around him, always scouting his surroundings; being the guard to the king of Hyrule, he was usually pretty tense as a habit. Although despite of his extreme caution, he always found a way to calm down and enjoy his surroundings. He looked at the shops set up; inns, and houses, and glanced back at the castle. It was huge and complexly built, with Hylian guards positioned all over it. The castle town was strung with many beautiful banners bearing either the Triforce, or the Hylian Crest.
Alvar was the most renowned swordsman of his time. He was unbeatable with a sword, fair competition for even the most skilled Rito archer, and almost as strong as a Goron. He swam quite well even next to a Zora. Many considered him the a very talented Hylian, but he was not prideful, in fact he was very humble. He made many friends, and many enemies. Alvar even managed to make some Gerudo friends as well, but he and his family were hated by the Yiga clan.
Alvar was average height for a hylian, and was thin but very strong. He was very funny at times, and puns held a special place in his heart. His love for puns was passed to his son of course. His wife couldn't stand them though, but Alvar was sure Zarya secretly thought they were hilarious. His green eyes always shined with determination, but also had a smile and mischievous look to them. His name meant 'warrior' in ancient Hylian, and he certainly strived hard to live up to it.
As he walked closer to his house, which was very cozy and sat in the quieter end of Castle Town, he smiled as he thought of the family he had to come home to. Zarya was the main attendant and dear friend to the queen of Hyrule, she served and attended Zara and her daughter Zelda, who was 6 at the time, whenever needed or called upon. That's how they met, through their jobs. They both were born poor and slowly worked their way up. Alvar taught himself to fight and practically raised himself since his parents didn't care much for him, and his amazing skill and humility shone through. Zarya, who's name means 'protector of warriors', was an orphan. She started as a lowly servant in the castle since she had nowhere else to turn, but everyone took a liking to the kind hearted and hardworking girl she was. The queen and her became fast friends. Zarya and Alvar met, and after working alongside each other for 3 and a half years and becoming even closer friends, they married. One thing that made the ceremony even more special, is that the king and queen of Hyrule attended it. They had one son, who they named Link, after the chosen hero of Hylia, who Alvar always looked up too.
Alvar finally came in sight of his house. Training was done for the week and since the King wasn't traveling this weekend, it meant he had the weekend off. As much as he loved his job, he was still excited to relax a bit, eat, sleep in, and enjoy the company of Zarya and "Little Link" as he endearingly called his 6 year old son.
