32. The Death Of A Father

Y/N's POV

I left the room and regrouped with Lucius and the other Death Eaters. We prowled around, looking for any signs of the others, my wand was out. I was pointing forward, I didn't know how I was going to do this, how I was going to help Harry and the others whilst being on the Death Eater's side.

"There they are!" Bellatrix suddenly shrieked.

Stunning Spells shot across the room, I saw that Harry smashed his way through the door ahead, bringing the others with him. They were all over the threshold just in time to slam the door against us.

"Colloportus!" I heard Harry shout.

"It doesn't matter!" said a man's voice. "There are other ways in - WE'VE GOT THEM, THEY'RE HERE!"

Running with the rest of the Death Eaters, I tried to get to where Harry was. We got there and we all rushed forward to attack. I knew it would be suspicious if I stayed behind, so I charged forwards with the rest of them.

"STUBEFY!" shouted Neville, his nose bloody and bruised. "STUBEFY, STUBEFY!"

Nothing happened.

Keeping up my act, I shot my own Stunning Spell at Neville, but it missed him by inches. Minutes later, Harry ran for it as Bellatrix Lestrange and I raced right at him: he was holding the prophecy high above his head.

The others streaked after him, knocking chairs and tables flying but no one dared to bewitch him in case they hurt the prophecy, and I saw that Harry dashed through the only door still open, the one through which we had come from. Following him, I ran a few feet into the new room and felt the floor vanish...

I was falling down step after step until I landed flat on my back in a sunken pit where there was a stone archway I remembered seeing earlier. I scrambled back on my feet and went over to where the other Death Eaters were. Harry was also there, confused and standing in the middle.

"Potter, your race is run," drawled Lucius Malfoy, pulling off his mask, "now hand me the prophecy like a good boy."

"Let-let the others go, and I'll give it to you!" said Harry desperately.

A few of the Death Eaters laughed.

"You are not in a position to bargain, Potter," said Lucius Malfoy, his pale face flushed with pleasure, "you see, there are ten of us and only one of you...or hasn't Dumbledore ever taught you how to count?"

"He's dot alone!" shouted a voice from above us. "He's still god be!"

Neville was coming down to where we were. "STUBEFY!" Neville shouted again, pointing his wand at each Death Eater in turn. "STUBEFY!"

Again, nothing happened. I quickly raced over to Neville, seized him and pinned his arms to the side. He struggled and kicked and I muttered in his ears, so that no one else could here me. "Trust me Neville, just trust me."

"It's Longbottom, isn't it?" sneered Lucius Malfoy. "Well, your grandmother is used to losing family members to our cause...your death will not come as a great shock."

"Longbottom?" repeated Bellatrix, and a truly evil smile lit her face. "Why, I have had the pleasure of meeting your parents, boy."

"I DOE YOU HAB!" roared Neville.

Bellatrix looked transported, alive with excitement as she glanced at Harry, then back at Neville.
"No, let's see how long Longbottom lasts before he cracks like his parents...unless Potter wants to give us the prophecy."

"DON'D GIB ID DO DEM!" roared Neville. "DON'D GIB ID DO DEM, HARRY!"

Bellatrix raised her wand. "Crucio!"

Neville screamed, his legs drawn up to his chest so that I was momentarily holding him off the ground. I dropped him and he fell to the floor, twitching and screaming in agony.

"That was just a taster!" said Bellatrix, raising her and so that Neville's screams stopped and he lay sobbing at her feet. How could I help him? Was there anyway I could take his pain?

She turned and gazed up at Harry. "Now, Potter, either give us the prophecy, or watch your little friend die the hard way!"

It seemed like Harry had no choice...he could smash it. Then there was nothing for the Death Eaters...what was he going to do?

Suddenly, high above us, two more doors burst open and five more people sprinted into the room: Sirius, Lupin, Moody, my father, my mother and Kingsley.

Malfoy turned, and raised his wand, but my mother had already sent a Stunning Spell right at him. The Death Eaters were completely distracted by the appearance of the members of the Order, who were now raining spells down upon them as they jumped from step to step towards the sunken floor. I had no choice but to fight with them, the Order knew who I was, so when Sirius' eyes met mine, the expression on his face changed from determination, to worry.

"Leave the boy!" roared Sirius to the others.

"F/N! Come here." Lucius instructed. "Fight back!"

Stuck in a dilemna, I sent two feeble Stunning Spells at Lupin which he easily deflected, just to keep Lucius and the others satisfied. Rushing around, I tried to locate where Harry and Neville where. I saw a Death Eater near them, he was trying to get the Prophecy.

Shooting a spell in his direction, the Death Eater flew backwards and his mask coming off in the process. It was Macnair, the man who was meant to execute Buckbeak.

I saw that Harry and Neville both looked at me. I gave them a slight nod before seeing another Death Eater, Dolohov.

Dolohov raised his wand. "Accio proph-"

I raised my wand to say something but Sirius had hurtled out of nowhere, rammed Dolohov with his shoulder and sent him flying out of the way. Now Sirius and Dolohov were duelling, their wands flashing like swords, sparks flying from their wand-tips.

Dolohov drew back his wand to make the same slashing movement he had used on Harry. Springing up, Harry yelled. "Petrificus Totalus!"

Dolohov's arms and legs snapped together and he keeled over backwards, landing with a crash on his back.

"Nice one James!" shouted Sirius, forcing Harry's head down as a pair of Stunning Spells flew towards them. "Now I want you to get out of-"

Another spell came flying towards them, narrowly missing Harry.

"Harry, take the prophecy, grab Neville and run!" Sirius yelled, dashing to meet Bellatrix.

"F/N! Get the prophecy from Potter!" Lucius yelled at me.

I nodded and raced off to Harry. "You're not really taking it off me are you?" questioned Harry.

I shook my head. "No but I have to make it look like I tried."

Casting a variety of spells, I aimed it near Harry but making sure that none of them hit him, or the prophecy.

"Get the others Harry and go, but before you leave I need you to stun me."

Harry nodded. "Impedimenta!"

I was blasted away, closing my eyes and bracing for impact, I landed on my back, landing on some debris. I was surprised at how I was still conscious, I could taste the sickly taste of blood in my mouth and I could feel blood dripping down the side of my face. I opened my eyes and groaned, all I could see where the Order duelling the Death Eaters. I tried to find where Harry and Neville were and I did. However, my eyes focused on the pearly white smoke up in the air, they had broken the prophecy.

I heard a shout from Neville and I saw the boy point above where we all were. Directly above us, framed in the doorway, stood Albus Dumbledore, his wand aloft, his face white and furious. I felt a kind of electric charge surge through me - we were saved.

Dumbledore sped down the steps past Neville and Harry. Dumbledore was already at the foot of the steps when the Death Eaters nearest realised he was there and yelled to the others. One of the Death Eaters ran for it, scrabbling like a monkey up the stone steps opposite. Dumbledore's spell pulled him back as easily and effortlessly as though he had hooked him with an invisible line.

I scrambled to where Sirius was, only to find him battling Bellaxtrix. I saw Sirius duck Bellatrix's jet of red light: he was laughing at her. "Come on, you can do better than that!"

Bellatrix, fuelled with anger, hit Sirius and he was suddenly on his back, on the floor.

"Finish him." Bellatrix told me. She knew he was my father.

I looked at my real father, he was looking up at me, pain and suffering in his eyes. I couldn't kill him, I wouldn't kill him. I looked in his eyes, I saw the caring man I had met a few years ago and I saw the boy who bullied Snape. I wanted to talk to him, ask him what pleasure he got from bullying Snape, scold him for his foolish actions as a teenager but I couldn't. I knew I was seconds away from losing him, I couldn't ask him...not now...

"N-no." I replied, trying to sound as confident as I could.

"I-I'm so sorry Y-Y/N," Sirius stuttered, coughing blood occasionally from his mouth, "I'm s-sorry I missed so much, that I w-wasn't there for you g-growing up. I h-hope you don't m-mind me saying but y-you remind me so m-much of her."

Sirius let out a splutter. Bellatrix grinned evily. "If you won't do it, I will."

I could see Sirius make his way back up on his feet, he wouldn't die. He was strong, he would be able to defend himself against Bellatrix...

But no, as soon as he stood up a jet of light hit him on the chest.

Sirius' body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch. I saw the look of mingled fear and sadness on my father's wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place.

I heard Bellatrix Lestrange's triumphant scream, Sirius had to reappear? Any second he was going to come back?

But Sirius did not reappear.

Bellatrix shrieked happily and before anyone else could get to her, she disappeared.

Harry had now come. "SIRIUS!"

He had reached the floor, his breath coming in searing gasps. I could see Harry go to where Sirius once was.

Lupin came and grabbed Harry back, not allowing him to go any further. The boy was screaming, he was crying, he was distraught.

"There's nothing you can do, Harry-"

"GET HIM! SAVE HIM! HE'S ONLY JUST GONE THROUGH!"

"It's too late, Harry."

I looked at the boy, I couldn't allow tears to fall. My mother and father looked at me but they didn't approach me. They merely just looked at me, inspected me. I knew I was bloody but the reason they inspected me was to decipher whether I was really on their side, or Voldemort's.

I couldn't seem to process it. This all felt like a twisted nightmare, I would wake up and Sirius would still be here right? Sirius wouldn't be dead...Bellatrix wouldn't of killed him. Everything was going to be fine. I glanced emptily at where Sirius' body had fallen, through that arch to someplace I had no knowledge of. He died a hero, he died a man I was proud to call my father. Although I was feeling a multitude of emotions, I didn't allow myself to cry. I didn't allow myself to show any sign of weakness.

Away from us, I could hear Dumbledore and the other Order members fighting the remaining Death Eaters. I looked at the arch in which Sirius fell through. I had to accept it, Sirius was gone.

I looked at Harry. "He's gone Harry, he's not coming back." and then I ran away, running to find Bellatrix.
