The Beginning
Y/n's POV
"Shiro, don't leave me." I ran over to him, hugging him tight. The spaceship loamed over us. He knelt down and hugged me.
"It's alright, Y/n. I won't be gone long. And Keith will help you with the Garrison." He leaned my chin up, gazing into my teary e/c eyes. "I will come back, sis. I promise." I nodded and hugged him tight.
Thirty minutes later, I watched the spaceship blast into space. Hugging myself, I watched as it climbed into the air. Keith placed a hand on my shoulder, and we walked away.
"Hurry back, Shiro. I need my brother back soon."
-2 years later-
"Galaxy Garrison flight log 5-11-14. Begin descent to Kerberos for rescue mission." I spoke aloud as I adjusted the controls. Hunk groaned as the shuttle jerked.
"Lance, can you keep this thing straight?" He asks the boy, who was pilot for this mission.
"Relax, Hunk, I'm just getting a feel for the stick." I roll my eyes as the boy replies. "I mean, it's not like I did this! Or this!" I yelp as the shuttle spun. I grab my seat and hung on. Poor Hunk groaned and grabbed his stomach.
"Okay, unless you want to wipe beef stroganoff out of all the little nooks and crannies in this thing, you'd better knock it off, man!" Hunk threatens. Hunk was famous for his weak stomach. Throwing him into a shuttle made it so much worse. You didn't want to be 50 feet from him when he pukes.
"We've picked up a distress beacon!" I look over at Pidge, who was bent over the tracking controls.
"All right, look alive, team! Pidge, track the coordinates." Lance flew the shuttle toward the beacon.
"Copy." Pidge turns back to the computer. Lance made the shuttle jerk again, and Hunk gripped his stomach once more.
"Knock it off, Lance! Please!" Hunk pleads.
"Lance." I warn. A computer starts beeping.
"This one's on you, buddy. We've got a hydraulic stabilizer out." Lance says. I heard rumbling and looked over at Hunk.
"Oh no." Hunk gulps. He looked like he was going to be sick.
"'Oh no'? Fix now, puke later." Lance tries to straighten the shuttle. I grip at my controls, trying to steady the aircraft.
"I lost contact. The shaking is interfering with our sensors." Pidge types furiously on the computer.
"Come on, Hunk!" Lance shouts.
"It's not responding." He said, moaning. I grit my teeth, trying to keep the shuttle from shaking.
"Oh, never mind, fellas. Thar she blows. Preparing for approach on visual." The shuttle starts descending.
"I don't think that's advisable with our current mechanical and...gastrointestinal issues." Pidge says, glancing at Hunk.
"Agreed." Hunk stutters.
"Stop worrying. This baby can take it, can't you, champ?" Lance says to the vessel. More rumbling started. "See? She was nodding. She was nodding. Pidge, hail down to them and let them know their ride is here."
"Lance, I don't think this is the best..." I start to say when the shuttle jerks again. I grip the controls, pulling it up.
"What are you doing?" Lance shouts at a fallen over Pidge. "Buckle your belt. And, Hunk, stop that shaking!"
"I'm try-Oh, no." I heard him vomit. Shivering in disgust, I try to steady the shuttle once more.
"Lance, she can't take it." I say. Pidge spoke into communication.
"Attention, lunar vessel, this is Galaxy Garrison Rescue Craft 1-Victor-6-3-Tango. Coming in for landing and extraction," Pidge spoke aloud, glancing at Lance as he adds. "Against crew recommendations." The boy didn't blink an eye.
"No time for your mutinous comments now, Pidge. They're going under and we're going in." Lance smirks.
"Look out for that overhang!" Pidge points at the projectile. Sure enough, Lance was taking us straight towards it.
"No worries. My first year in flight school, know what they called me? They called me "The Tailor", because of how I thread the needle." He turned to look at us, smirking. He turned back quickly, noticing how close we were. "Come around, come around! Come on, come on!" One of the monitors started beeping.
"We lost a wing!" Hunk shouts.
"Lance!" I yell at the boy.
"Oh, man." he sounded nervous. He had a right to be, because after this, I was going to wring his neck. I switched the controls over to mine, and tried to pull up the shuttle before it crashed, but it didn't work.
"Simulation failed." The computer said, and the words popped up on the screen. We all groaned, climbing out of the simulator.
"Roll out, donkeys! Well, let's see if we can't use this complete failure as a lesson for the rest of you students. Can anyone point out the mistakes these four so-called cadets made in the simulator?" Iverson paced in front of the students. Julia Wilkins, my best friend, shot me a sympathetic look. I shrugged, knowing that this wouldn't affect my grade. I was top in my class.
"The engineer puked in the main gearbox." A student says.
"Yes. As everyone knows, vomit is not an approved lubricant for engine systems. What else?" Iverson says. Hunk hangs his head. I pat his shoulder, reassuring him. He smiled sadly at me.
"The comm spec removed his safety harness." I side-glanced at Pidge, who held his head high.
"The pilot crashed!" Lance frowned at this. Iverson nodded.
"Correct. The only thing right was when the copilot tried to pull the shuttle up a bit to slow the crash." I nod at Iverson as he faced me and Lance. "I have half a mind to degrade you to copilot, and move Y/n up to pilot. But worst of all, the whole jump, they were arguing with each other. Heck, if you're going to be this bad individually, you'd better at least be able to work as a team! Galaxy Garrison exists to turn young cadets like you into the next generation of elite astroexplorers, but these kinds of mental mistakes are exactly what cost the lives of the men on the Kerberos Mission." I gripped the edge of my shirt, trying not to speak out.
"That's not true, sir!" Pidge says.
"What did you say?" Iverson turned to Pidge in a rage. Lance flung his hands over Pidge's mouth.
"Sorry, sir. I think he hit his head when he fell out of his chair. But point taken." Lance explains quickly. Man, at least Lance was good with words.
"I hope I don't need to remind you that the only reason you're here is that the best pilot in your class had a discipline issue and flunked out. Don't follow in his footsteps." I cringe at the mention of Keith. I hadn't seen him since he left the Garrison.
After all the simulations were over, it was time for lights-out. I was sitting on my bed, almost asleep, when I felt something moving off to my left. Moving slowly, I watch as Pidge got up, and grabbed a few things before quietly leaving the dorm. I waited a couple minutes before following him. As I crept down the halls, two voices reach my ear. I walk toward it, only to run into Lance and Hunk. I catch Lance before he fell over into Hunk.
"What are you two doing out here?" I hiss.
"We could be asking you the same thing." I sigh as Lance replies. Hunk looked a bit unhappy about being out after lights-out.
"I'm following Pidge. He left our dorm not too long ago." I explain. Lance nods at this.
"We were doing the same. We saw him sneak out." Lance explains.
"Then let's go find him." I turn down the corridor, followed closely by Lance. Hunk was a bit hesitant, but he still came. We found Pidge sitting on the roof, headphones over his head. Lance crept forward to scare him.
"You come up here to rock out?" He says into Pidge's ear. The boy jumped, then saw who it was.
"Oh, Lance, Hunk, Y/n. No, um, just looking at the stars." He says, turning away. Lance comes closer and spots the computer in front of Pidge.
"Man, where'd you get this stuff? It doesn't look like Garrison tech." Lance bends over Pidge, peering at the tech.
"That's because it's not." I say, remembering watching Pidge as he built this.
"I built it." He says proudly.
"You built all of this?" Hunk leans forward, hand out to poke the objects.
"Ah-stop it!" He swats Hunk's hand away. "With this thing, I can scan all the way to the edge of the solar system." Pidge turns back to Lance.
"That right? All the way to Kerberos?" I look down as he spoke. Pidge groaned at the mention of Kerberos. "You go ballistic every time the instructors bring it up. What's your deal?" Lance demands. Hunk had crept over again.
"Second warning, Hunk!" Pidge shouted. The boy groaned and sat back, next to me.
"Look, Pidge, if we're going to bond as a team, we can't have any secrets." Lance says.
"Pidge, he's right." I say, placing a hand on his shoulder. Pidge sighs.
"Fine. The world as you know it is about to change. The Kerberos Mission wasn't lost because of some malfunction or crew mistake. Stop touching my equipment!" Pidge shouts the last part when Hunk reached forward once more. I chuckled as Hunk sat back once more. "So, I've been scanning the system and picking up alien radio chatter." He finishes, sitting back.
"Whoa, what? Aliens?" Hunk looked at Pidge in confusion. I gazed at him in curiosity. Alien radio chatter?
"Okay. So, you're insane. Got it." I slap Lance upside the head. He groans and glares at me.
"Be nice." I say. He snorts and turns back to Pidge, who shoots me a grateful look.
"I'm serious. They keep repeating one word: "Voltron." And tonight, it's going crazier than I have ever heard it." Pidge explains excitedly.
"How crazy?" Lance asks. Suddenly, Iverson's voice came over the loudspeakers.
"Attention, students. This is not a drill. We are on lockdown! Security situation Zulu Niner. Repeat: all students are to remain in barracks until further notice." I look up as he speaks, and see something high in the sky, aiming toward the earth.
"Look!" I point at it. Lance squints at it.
"What's going on? Is that a meteor? A very, very big meteor?" Hunk asks quickly, getting nervous. I pull out my binoculars, which I had grabbed when I left, and lift them to my eyes. I gasp at what I see.
"It's a ship!" Pidge gasps. He yelps when Lance pulls Pidge's binoculars from him.
"Holy cow! I can't believe what I'm seeing! That's not one of ours." He looks at the ship, mouth open in awe.
"No. It's one of theirs." Pidge says, referring to the aliens. I pull my binoculars away to stare at him.
"So, wait. There really are aliens out there?" Hunk asks the question before I can.
"We've got to see that ship!" Pidge says, ignoring Hunk's comment. He runs to the exit, Lance on his heels. I get up to follow them.
"Hunk, come on!" I shout over my shoulder. Hunk grunts before following.
"Oh, this is the worst team-building exercise ever." He mumbles as he catches up to me. We race after the others. We find Lance and Pidge on a ledge, the crashed ship a couple meters away. Lance uses the binoculars once more.
"Whoa! What the heck is that thing? And who the heck is she?" Lance peers closer at one of the women down at the crash scene.
"Lance!" I laugh quietly as Pidge wallops Lance upside the head.
"Ow! Right, alien ship. Man, we'll never get past all of those guards to get a look." He whines. Hunk seemed really happy at the news.
"Aw, man. Yeah, yeah. I guess there's nothing to do but head back to the barracks, right?" He says, inching back toward the buildings.
"Hunk." I pull him back down. Pidge looks up from his computer for a second.
"Wait. They set up a camera in there and I grabbed its feed. Look!" I wipe a strand of my h/c hair out of my face to look at the screen. I gasped at what I see.
"Hey! What are you doing?" Shiro was strapped to a table, struggling in the restraints.
"Calm down, Shiro. We just need to keep you quarantined until we run some tests." Iverson came into view, leaning over Shiro.
"You have to listen to me! They destroy worlds! Aliens are coming!" Shiro thrashed in the restraints. I cover my mouth with a hand, shock running through my body. Lance peered at the screen.
"That's Shiro! The pilot of the Kerberos Mission! That guy's my hero!" He gasps. Hunk turns to look at me.
"Guess he's not dead in space after all. Isn't he your brother?" Lance and Pidge both turn as well.
"Yes, Shiro is my brother." I say, staring at the screen. Pidge turned back to the screen.
"Where's the rest of the crew?" he squints at the screen. On the feed, Iverson turned back to Shiro.
"Do you know how long you've been gone?" He asks.
"I don't know. Months? Years? Look, there's no time. Aliens are coming here for a weapon. They're probably on their way. They'll destroy us. We have to find Voltron!" Shiro shouts at the man.
"Voltron!" Pidge gasps. I nod.
"You were right." I say.
"Sir, take a look at this." One of the men in the room point to Shiro's arm. I gasp when I realize that it wasn't his arm. His arm had been replaced by a metal one. "It appears his arm has been replaced with a cyborg prosthetic."
"Put him under until we know what that thing can do." Iverson orders.
"No, no, no, no-don't put me under! No! There's no time! Let me go!" Shiro thrashed again. I gasps loudly. Hunk places an arm over my shoulders, comforting me.
"They didn't ask about the rest of the crew." Pidge says, thinking.
"What are they doing? The guy's a legend, they're not even gonna listen to him?" Lance looks down at the site.
"We have to get him out." Pidge says.
"Yes, we do. We can't just leave him there. I can't just leave him there." I say, glaring at the screen.
"Uh, I hate to be the voice of reason here, always, but weren't we watching on TV because there was no way to get past the guards?" Hunk asks, twitching nervously.
"That was before we were properly motivated. We've just got to think. Could we tunnel in?" Lance looks at Pidge for an answer.
"Maybe we could get some hazmat suits and sneak in like med techs." Pidge wonders aloud.
"Or we dress up like cooks, head back to the dorms, sneak into the commissary-little late-night snack." Hunk tries to persuade us. I smile at him, then turn back to the scene.
"...No. What we need is a distraction." Just as Lance says that, an explosion erupts a short distance away. People started screaming.
"Is that the aliens? Is that the aliens? Are they here? They got here so quick!" Hunk stutters, freaking out. I place a hand on him to calm him.
"No, those explosions were a distraction. For him." Pidge points at a figure jumping off a hovercar and sneaking toward the building. "The Garrison's headed toward the blast, and he's sneaking in from the other side."
"No way! Oh, he is not going to beat us in there! That guy is always trying to one-up me!" Lance starts running at the spaceship.
"Who is it?" Hunk asks.
"Keith!" Lance answers. I gasp, realizing he's right.
"Who?" Pidge turns to me.
"Are you sure?" Hunk starts after Lance. Pidge and I are close behind.
"Oh, I'd recognize that mullet anywhere!" Lance calls.
"Who's Keith?" Pidge looks at me again.
"You'll find out soon." I pant. We race after Lance and Hunk. We run into the room where we saw Shiro. Keith was lifting Shiro off the table, wrapping an arm around Shiro to keep him steady.
"Shiro." I whisper.
"Nope. No, you-no, no. No, you don't. I'm saving Shiro." Lance goes to Shiro's other side, lifting the man up.
"Who are you?" Keith looks at Lance in confusion.
"Who am I? Uh, the name's Lance. We were in the same class at the Garrison." Lance explains, clearly irritated.
"Really? Are you an engineer?" Keith asks.
"No, I'm a pilot! We were like rivals. You know, Lance and Keith, neck and neck." Lance says, offended that Keith didn't recognize him.
"Oh, wait. I remember you. You're a cargo pilot." Keith says.
"Well, not anymore. I'm fighter class now, thanks to you washing out." Lance says proudly.
"Lance!" I hiss.
"Well, congratulations." Keith mutters. He spots me. "Y/n?"
"Less talking, more saving." I say, opening doors as Keith and Lance carry Shiro out. Hunk and Pidge go check to locate the Garrison crew. They came running back.
"Oh, man. They're coming back and they do not look happy. We've got to go. Uh, do you mind if we catch a ride with you?" Hunk jumps onto the hovercraft before Keith can reply. I climb up next to him.
"Is this thing going to be big enough for all of us?" Pidge asks, climbing on.
"No." Keith mutters. He shoves Shiro into Pidge, who struggles to hold him up.
"Why am I holding this guy?" He complains. I reach over and pull Shiro over a bit, holding onto him. I can't believe he's alive.
"Hey, we did all fit." Hunk says from behind me. Keith hits the accelerator. We fly forward, the Garrison on our heels.
"Can't this thing go any faster?" Lance complains, looking back.
"We could toss out some non-essential weight." Keith says.
"Oh, right!" I laugh when Lance looks around for anything to throw off before he realizes. "Okay, so that was an insult. I get it."
"Big man, lean left!" Keith shouts. The entire hovercraft veered left as Hunk leaned over. Screaming, I grabbed hold of Shiro before he flew off. I clutched the side of the hovercraft, straining to stay on. Hunk pulled me up a little, keeping a grip on me.
"Aw, man! Mr. Harris just wiped out Professor Montgomery! No, no. He's fine." Hunk sighs in relief as we watch the two cruisers after they collide.
"Big man, lean right!" Keith shouts. The hovercraft veers once more. I grabbed onto Shiro as he slid toward the edge of the hovercraft. I look up and gasp at what's ahead.
"Guys? Is that a cliff up ahead?" Hunk stutters.
"Oh, no, no, no!" Lance shouts.
"Yep." Keith leans forward, gunning the throttle.
"What are you doing? You're going to kill us all!" Lance shouts at Keith.
"Shut up and trust me!" He says. Everyone screamed as we flew off the cliff. We land, jolting me up off the craft. Hunk grabs me by the hand before I slid off. He pulls me back on and we watch the Garrison fade from view.
Keith drives to a shack in the middle of the desert. We all tumbled off the hovercraft. I helped Keith get Shiro inside. After a while, Shiro began to stir.
"Shiro?" I kneel next to him. His grey eyes land on me.
"Y/n?" I smile. He reaches up and pulls me into a hug. I blink back tears as I hold him.
"You're squishing me." I mumble through his shirt. Shiro laughs and pulls me back, allowing me to breathe again. He wipes an escaped tear.
"You've grown. I missed you." He whispers. I smile at him.
"I missed you too. It's been so long. I thought you died." Shiro's eyes grew wide.
"How long was I gone?" He asks.
"Two years." I say. Shiro gasps.
"Two years?" I nod. He looks around the shack. Keith had just entered. Lance, Hunk, and Pidge were in the other room.
"Y/n, do you mind if I snatch Shiro for a few minutes?" Keith asks as he approaches. I nod.
"Sure." I sit on the couch as Shiro and Keith walk out. Pidge, Lance, and Hunk appear, laughing about something. I smile at them.
"Hey, guys." They all turn to me.
"Where's Shiro?" Lance looks behind me, expecting to see Shiro. I gesture to the door.
"He went outside with Keith. They'll be back in a second." As I spoke, the two reappear. Keith walked up to one of the walls and pulled off the blanket. Under it was a large map, covered with pictures and lines, all leading to a single pin in the map.
"What have you been working on?" Shiro examines the map.
"I can't explain it, really. After getting booted from the Garrison, I was kind of lost and found myself drawn out to this place. It's like something...some energy, was telling me to search." Keith explains, crossing his arms.
"For what?" I asks.
"Well, I didn't really know at the time...until I stumbled across this area. It's an outcropping of giant boulders with caves covered in these ancient markings. Each tells a slightly different story about a blue lion, but they all share clues leading to some event, some arrival happening last night." Keith looks at Shiro. "Then you showed up."
"I should thank you for getting me out. Lance, right?" Shiro held out his arm to Lance. Lance hesitated when he realized it was his metal arm, but gripped it firmly, nodding.
"The nervous guy's Hunk. I'm Pidge. You already know Y/n." Pidge looks up at Shiro. "So, did anyone else from your crew make it out?"
"I'm not sure. I remember the mission and being captured. After that, it's just bits and pieces." Shiro scratches his head. I grip his arm, flashing him a reassuring smile. He smiles back.
"Yeah, sorry to interrupt, but back to the aliens. Where are they now? Are they coming? Are they coming for us? Like-where are they at this very moment?" The questions fired out of Hunk's mouth.
"I can't really put it together. I remember the word 'Voltron.' It's some kind of weapon they're looking for, but I don't know why. Whatever it is, I think we need to find it before they do." Shiro looks at our group.
"Well, last night, I was rummaging through Pidge's stuff, and I found this picture." Hunk holds up a picture. In it was a boy and a girl posing in front of a spaceship. "Look, it's his girlfriend."
"Hey, give me that!" Pidge snatches the picture, hiding it. "What were you doing in my stuff?" He demands.
"I-well, I was looking for a candy bar." I chuckle as Hunk continues. "But, then, I started reading his diary."
"What?!" Pidge stares at him in shock. I roll my eyes.
"And I noticed the repeating series of numbers the aliens are searching for looks a lot like a Fraunhofer line." I frowned at him.
"Frown who?" Keith and I say.
"It's a number describing the emission spectrum of an element, only, this element doesn't exist on Earth. I thought it might be this Voltron. And I think I can build a machine to look for it, like a Voltron Geiger counter." Hunk finishes.
"Hunk, you big, gassy genius!" Lance exclaims.
Hunk, with the help of Pidge, was able to make the counter within a few minutes. We started out, following the signal.
"Oh my gosh, Hunk. This might actually work." I smile at the boy. He blushes.
"Thanks, Y/n. It's pretty fascinating, really. The wavelength looks like this." Hunk points at the large boulders Keith had showed before. Keith reached over.
"Give me that!" he snatched the notebook and compared the lines.
"Okay, I admit. This is super freaky." Lance mutters. I roll my eyes at him.
"I'm getting a reading." Hunk says, peering at the screen. The beeping started. It picked up as we neared a cave.
"Whoa." Hunk and Pidge say, looking around the cave. Carvings covered the cave. I examine one of them, running my hands over it.
"What are these?" Shiro says, looking at the carvings.
"These are the lion carvings I was telling you about. They're everywhere around here." Keith says. Lance walked up to the cave wall, examining the carvings.
"Hmm." He reached out and touched one of the carvings. It started to glow blue. "Whoa. Whoa!" I watched at all the carvings start to glow.
"They've never done that before." Keith peers at the carvings in curiosity. Suddenly, the floor opened up, dropping us. Screaming, we fell through the floor. We fell into a larger cave, splashing into a pool below. Unfortunately, I land in Lance's lap. He smirks as I try to untangle myself from him.
"Well, hello, beautiful." He winks at me. I shove his head into the water. He comes up sputtering. He pouts at me before getting up, wringing out his clothes. I had escaped from the water, having used Lance as a cushion and barrier. Pidge had landed on Hunk, who was grimacing for the impact. Keith and Shiro had landed side by side, groaning from the fall. I helped them up, as Lance looked around the cave.
"They are everywhere." Lance says. We all look up and see a giant blue lion sitting in front of us, towering over our heads and encased in what looked like a blue force field.
"Wow." I stare in wonder at it.
"Is this it? Is this the Voltron?" Pidge looks up at the lion. It was huge, taking up over half the cavern.
"It must be." Shiro says.
"This is what's been causing all of this crazy energy out here. Looks like there's a force field around it." Keith says, examining it. I start walking up to it, following Lance. The others walk after us.
"Does anyone else get the feeling this is staring at them?" Lance moves side to side as we walk toward the lion.
"No." I say, laughing silently.
"Yeah. The eyes are totally following me." Lance reaches the lion first. Keith comes up to his side.
"I wonder how we get through this." Keith places a hand on the force field separating us from the lion.
"Maybe you just have to knock." Lance reaches up and does so. He screams like a girl when the force field lowered. Suddenly, I didn't see the cavern anymore. I was in a void. I saw six lions running toward me. Each were a different color: red, black, blue, yellow, green, and orange. The first five formed a huge robot, with a glowing sword and shield. The orange lion grew in size, as tall as the robot's waist. It roared, a gun forming on its back. Everything went black, then I saw the cavern once more.
"Uh, did everyone see that?" Lance asks. I nod.
"Voltron is a robot. Voltron is a huge, huge, awesome robot!" Hunk exclaims.
"And there was that large lion as well." I say. Pidge nods.
"And this thing is only one part of it! I wonder where the rest of them are." He says.
"This is what they're looking for." Shiro confirms.
"Incredible." Keith mumbles. The Lion then bent down, causing Hunk and Pidge to scream. Lance chuckles and approaches it.
"Hmm. Huh. Hmmph." Lance walks into the Lion's opened mouth. I follow him. Inside, Lance was sitting in a chair in the cockpit. He screams when the chair thrusts forward, causing him to hit his head on the console. I giggle as he sits up, walking up behind him.
"Whoa." Pidge and Hunk say as the others appear.
"All right! Very nice!" Lance grips the handles.
"Okay, guys, I feel the need to point out, just so that we're all, you know, aware. We are in some kind of futuristic alien cat head right now." Hunk says, looking out the cockpit's windshield.
"Whoa. Did you guys just hear that?" Lance suddenly said.
"Hear what?" I ask, confused. I hadn't heard anything.
"I-I think it's talking to me. Hmm...um..." Lance touched a few buttons and the Lion roars. Hunk screams my ear off as the Lion starts moving.
"Okay. Got it. Now, let's try this." Lance thrusts the handles forward. The Lion jumps into the air, smashing through the rocks. We surface and fly through the air, spinning and flipping in the air.
"You are - the worst - pilot - ever!" Keith screams at Lance as I hold onto Shiro so I don't fly around in the cockpit. Everyone held onto anything that was stable, including each other.
"Isn't this awesome!" Lance exclaims.
"Make it stop. Make it stop." Hunk groans. I gulp, still holding onto Shiro.
"I'm not making it do anything. It's like it's on autopilot." Lance peers at the controls.
"What?" I ask. "Where are you going?" Keith demands.
"I just said it's on autopilot!" Lance yells. "It says there's an alien ship approaching Earth. I think we're supposed to stop it."
"What did it say, exactly?" Pidge asks.
"Well, it's not like it's saying words, more like feeding ideas into my brain. Kind of." Lance says unreassuringly.
"Well, if this thing is the weapon they're coming for, why don't we just, I don't know, give it to them? Maybe, they'll leave us alone. Sorry, Lion. Nothing personal." Hunk says.
"You don't understand. These monsters spread like a plague throughout the galaxy, destroying everything in their path. There's no bargaining with them. They won't stop until everything is dead." Shiro says firmly.
"Oh." Hunk mutters. "Never mind then." The Lion roars. We all look up and gasp.
"Oh...Holy crow! Is that really an alien ship?" Hunk asks nervously.
"They found me." Shiro stares at the ship in front of us.
"We've got to get it out of here!" Pidge shouts.
"Hang on!" Lance throws the handles. The Lion shoots forward. "All right. Okay, I think I know what to do."
"Be careful, Lance. This isn't a simulator." I warn, holding onto Shiro once more.
"Well, that's good. I always wreck the simulator. Let's try this." Lance spins the Lion, dodging two fighters. The fighters crash into each other, causing an explosion.
"Nice job, Lance." Shiro says.
"Okay, I think it's time to get these guys away from our planet." Lance thrusts the Lion forward. Hunk looks back.
"Oh, no!" Hunk screams. I look back and see this ship gaining.
"They're gaining on us." Pidge shouts.
"Lance! Come on!" I yell at the boy.
"It's weird. They're not trying to shoot us. They're just chasing." Lance glances behind.
"Okay, seriously, now we think having aliens follow us is good? I am not on board with this new direction, guys." Hunk stuttered.
"Where are we?" I ask, scanning the space outside the cockpit.
"Edge of the solar system. There's Kerberos." Shiro pointed at the planet.
"It takes months for our ships to get out this far. We got out here in five seconds." Pidge says, amazed. Suddenly, a large wormhole appears in front of us.
"Uh, what is that?" I ask.
"Uh, this may seem crazy, but I think the Lion wants us to go through there!" Lance says.
"Where does it go?" Pidge leans over Lance, trying to get a closer look at wormhole.
"I-I don't know. Shiro, you're the senior officer here. What should we do?" Lance says. We all turn to Shiro.
"Whatever is happening, the Lion knows more than we do. I say we trust it, but we're a team now. We should decide together." Shiro says. I smile proudly at him. Lance nods.
"All right. I guess we're all ditching class tomorrow." He flies the Lion into the wormhole. The entire Lion shakes as we travel. Groaning, I hold onto Shiro to keep from falling over. Suddenly, the wormhole opens and we find ourselves in a planet's atmosphere.
"Whoa. That was..." Lance starts to say when Hunk vomits. I wrinkle my nose in disgust.
"Eww." I mutter.
"So sorry." He groans.
"I'm just surprised it took this long." Pidge remarks.
"I don't recognize any of these constellations." Shiro says, examining the sky. "We must be a long, long way from Earth."
"The Lion seems to want to go to this planet. I think...I think it's going home." Lance says. "Guys, personal space. Hunk, your breath is killing me." I back up a bit, but still hold onto the chair and Shiro.
"Um, is it just me or is anyone else having second thoughts about flying through a mysterious wormhole? Why are we listening to a robotic Lion anyway?" Hunk complains.
"It got us away from that alien warship, didn't it?" Lance counters.
"I don't know if you noticed, but we're in an alien warship." Keith points out.
"Oh, are you scared?" Lance teases.
"With you at the helm? Terrified." Keith replies.
"Boys, please." I say, giving Lance the look. He sticks his tongue out at me.
"All right, knock it off. No one's happy to be in this situation, but we're here now. If we want to get through this, we've got to do it together." Shiro says.
"So, what do we do?" Pidge looks at Shiro.
"First, we find out where we're headed. Lance?" Shiro turns to the boy.
"I...don't know. The Lion's not talking to me anymore. Wait! Wait, wait, wait! Shh! Listen. I think I hear something." Lance says. We all go quiet, listening.
"I'm hearing it too." Keith says.
"It's, uh – It's kind of a – a high-pitched squeal?" Hunk remarks. Then I smelled it.
"Ugh, Lance!" I complain, covering my nose. Everyone started complaining. Lance just smirks.
"But seriously, there's a castle up ahead." Lance points at it. The castle was huge, with four sections towering into the sky. It was pearly white, with hints of blue.
"Wow." I say, staring at it.
"Keep your guard up." Shiro says.
"Something wrong?" Pidge turns to Shiro.
"My crew was captured by aliens once. I'm not going to let it happen again." I squeeze his hand as we walk out of the Lion. We stand in front of the castle. The Lion seemed to bend toward us.
"No, no! I knew it was going to eat us! No!" Hunk screamed. The Lion roared, and the castle doors opened.
"Oh, the door is open. Guess I was wrong about you." Hunk walks after us.
"Hello?" I call out. My voice echoed through the hall.
"From the size of the Lion, I expected these steps to be bigger." Pidge comments as climb the stairway.
"Hold for identity scan." A computer voice says out of nowhere.
"What?" I turn to look at everyone.
"Why are we here? What do you want with us?" Shiro demands. The lights flicker on, lighting the way.
"I guess we're going that way." Pidge says.
"Hello?" Hunk calls out as we walk. We find ourselves in a large room, with six seats at controls.
"Where are we?" I ask, looking around.
"It's...some kind of control room." Pidge says. Suddenly, a hiss erupts in the silence, causing us all to jump. Two sections of the floor rise, revealing two people in pods. They weren't moving.
"Are these guys...dead?" Hunk asks. One of the pods open. The woman inside falls out.
"Father!" She tumbles into Lance, who catches her. He blushes, then puts on his flirting smile.
"Hello." He says. I roll my eyes.
"Here he goes again." I mutter.
"Who are you? Where am I?" The woman looks around.
"I'm Lance. And you're right here in my arms." Lance flirts. Pidge and I scoff.
"Your ears." She says.
"They're...hideous. What's wrong with them?" She stands up, pulling away from him.
"Nothing's wrong with them! They heard exactly what you said about them!" Lance screeches when she grabs him by the arm and pins him to the floor, yanking on his ear.
"Lance!" I run toward him, but Shiro pulls me back.
"Who are you? Where is King Alfor? What are you doing in my castle?" The woman demands. As I look at her, I notice her ears. They were pointed. She also had pink markings under her eyes. She wasn't human, that's for sure.
"A giant blue lion brought us here! That's all we know!" Lance shouts, grimacing in pain.
"How do you have the Blue Lion? What happened to its Paladin? What are you all doing here? Unless...how long has it been?" She releases Lance, who stumbles out of her reach, rubbing his ear.
"We don't know what you're talking about. Why don't you tell us who you are? Maybe we can help." Shiro says. Keith pulls Lance up.
"I am Princess Allura of Planet Altea. I've got to find out where we are and how long we've been asleep." Allura walks over to the two columns in the center of the room and places her hands on them. They start glowing, and a screen pops up.
"Okay, that's how that works." Pidge leans close as Allura starts flipping through the screen.
"Enemy combatants!" I turn around to see the other pod had opened, allowing a man to step out. He launched himself at Lance, but stumbled instead. "Quiznack! You're lucky I have a case of the old 'sleep chamber knees.' Otherwise, I'd grab you head like this, wrap you up like so – and one, two, three – sleepy time!" The man snapped his fingers, gesturing that he would snap Lance's neck. I grimaced. I watched as Lance and the man went back and forth, chuckling.
"Man, these guys are good." Hunk mutters.
"Apparently so." I laugh. A computer beeps and we turn to Allura when she gasps.
"It can't be." She whispers.
"What is it?" The orange-haired man looks at her.
"We've been asleep for 10,000 years!" She exclaims. "Planet Altea and all of the planets in our solar system have been destroyed. Coran, Father is gone. Our entire civilization..." She glared suddenly. "Zarkon."
"Zarkon?" Shiro gasps at the name.
"He was the King of the Galra. A vile creature and enemy to all free people." Allura explains, clearly mad.
"I remember now...I was his prisoner." Shiro says.
"He's still alive? Impossible!" She exclaims.
"I can't explain it, but it's true. He's searching for a super weapon called Voltron." Shiro explains.
"He's searching for it because he knows it's the only thing that can defeat him, and that's exactly why we must find it before he does." Allura says.
"Princess, you must eat. It's been 10,000 years." Coran walks up to Allura.
"I'm not hungry." She simply says.
"Man, 10,000 years? That's like 1,000 plus 10!" I chuckle at Lance's miscalculation.
"That's times ten." Keith corrects.
"Whatever, dropout." Lance sneers. I roll my eyes and slap his arm.
"What?" He demands.
"Stop being like that. There's no reason for it." I say. Lance starts to talk back, but a stern look from Shiro shut the boy's mouth.
"I haven't eaten since breakfast and I'm starving." Hunk complains.
"Yeah, but you've thrown up, like, five times." Pidge comments.
"Hmm, good point." Hunk says. I chuckle.
"I can't believe your civilization created such advanced technology 10,000 years ago. It must have been an incredible place." Shiro remarks, glancing at Allura.
"Yes, it was...but now it is gone and we're the last Alteans alive." Coran explains. Allura looks down when she hears squeaking. She bends down and looks into the bottom of her healing pod.
"Looks like we're not the last, after all." She smiles. Four mice sat in the bottom of her pod. Suddenly, alarms start blaring.
"A Galra battleship has set its tracker on us!" Coran shouts, leaning over the controls.
"How did they find us?" Allura runs to the controls.
"I'm not sure, but I bet it's Keith's fault." Lance side-glares at the boy.
"Say whatever you've got to say to make yourself feel better. After getting us stuck on the other side of a wormhole!" Keith turns angrily toward Lance.
"I'll stick you in a wormhole!" Lance flips to glare at Keith.
"Guys!" I shout.
"Stow it, cadets! This is no time to place blame. We have to work as a team." Shiro interferes. Lance and Keith both huff and turn away from each other. Shiro turned to Coran and Allura. "How long before they arrive?"
"At their speed? Oh, well, carry the two...I'd say probably a couple of days." Coran says.
"Good. Let them come! By the time they get here, you six will have reformed Voltron, and together, we will destroy Zarkon's empire!" Allura states. Hunk burps suddenly.
"Sorry. Food goo." His stomach rumbles and he groans.
"Princess, there are six of these lions. How are we going to find the rest?" Shiro asks. I turn to look at Allura. She walks up to the two columns and places her hands on them, closing her eyes.
"King Alfor connected the Lions to Allura's life force. She alone is the key to the Lions' whereabouts." Coran explains. Suddenly, a large galactic map covers the room. Stars fill the air, and the location of the Lions appear as well.
"Wow! That's amazing!" I stare in wonder at the 3D map.
"These are coordinates. The Black Lion looks like it's in the same location as the Blue Lion." Pidge peers at the two Lions.
"Look at your primitive synapses firing away in their little brain cage." Coran comments. I stare at the Altean in confusion.
"Very observant." Allura says. "That's because the Black Lion is in the castle."
"To keep the Black Lion out of Zarkon's hands, King Alfor locked it in the castle. It can only be freed if the other five lions are present." Coran explains.
"As you have found, the Lions choose their pilots. It is a mystical bond and cannot be forced. The quintessence of the pilot is mirrored in his Lion. Together, they form something greater than science can explain. The Black Lion is the decisive head of Voltron. It will take a pilot who is a born leader and in control at all times, someone whose men will follow without hesitation. That is why, Shiro, you will pilot the Black Lion." The Lion passes in front of Shiro, who looks at it, determined. Allura turns to the next Lion. "The Green Lion has an inquisitive personality and needs a pilot of intellect and daring. Pidge, you will pilot the Green Lion." Pidge smiles and nods. "The Blue Lion-"
"Hold up, let me guess. Takes the most handsome stash best pilot of the bunch?" Lance interrupts, flashing Allura a smile. She sighs and carries on.
"...The Yellow Lion is caring and kind. Its pilot is one who puts the needs of others above his own. His heart must be mighty. As the leg of Voltron, you will lift the team up and hold them together." Hunk turns around when the Princess looks at him. He looks back and points to himself in question. Allura nods before continuing. "The Orange Lion is closer to the Black Lion than any of the other Lions, and needs a pilot who is kind, but brave and determined. Its pilot must have a strong bond with the Black Paladin and must be willing to do whatever it takes to keep her fellow Paladins safe. As Voltron's mighty Lion, you will find ways to greatly influence the other Paladins, especially in times of need." My eyes widen when Allura turns to me. I look at the Orange Lion, then back at Allura, nodding. Allura continues.
"The Red Lion is temperamental and the most difficult to master. It's faster and more agile than the others, but also more unstable. Its pilot needs to be someone who relies more on instincts than skill alone. Keith, you will fly the Red Lion." Keith nods, but Lance interrupts once more.
"What? This guy?" He questions. I shoot him a glare, but Allura ignores his interruption.
"Unfortunately, I cannot locate the Red Lion's coordinates yet. There must be something wrong with the castle. After 10,000 years, it might need some work." Allura explains.
"Don't worry, we'll find it soon. They don't call me 'The Coranic' for nothing. It's because it sounds like 'mechanic'. So...Coranic, mechanic. It's not – it doesn't sound...exactly like it. It's similar." I chuckle as Coran trails off. I look back up when the Lions roar and run to each other.
"Once all the Lions are united, you will form Voltron, the most powerful warrior ever known, the Defender of the Universe." Allura states. I examine the Orange Lion, which had grown in size and stood faithfully by Voltron's side.
"Awesome!" Hunk exclaims.
"Oh..." Pidge mumbles. I pat his shoulder, smiling. He smiles back at me.
"Wait. Okay, we're going to be in there and flying Lions. Got that part. How do Lions turn into legs? Also, is this going to be a long trip? Because I have to pee. Do you people pee?" Hunk asks, holding himself.
"We don't have much time. Pidge, Y/n, and I will go after the Orange and Green Lions. Lance, you take Hunk and get the yellow one. Keith, you stay here. If you locate the Red Lion, go get it." Shiro orders. Everyone Everyone nods.
"In the meantime, I'll get this castle's defenses ready. They'll be sorely needed." Allura says.
"I'll ready a pod and load the coordinates so that you can reach the Green Lion." Everyone goes to where they need to be. In a few minutes, I'm in a pod with Pidge and Shiro, heading to a wormhole.
"We can only keep the wormholes that lead to the other Lions open for two of your Earth hours, so you'll have to be quick about your work. The good news is that, according to my readings, both planets are relatively peaceful. So, if you do get stuck, they could be relaxing places to live out the rest of your lives. Well, enjoy the trip!" Coran logs off communication and we plunge into the wormhole.
