Chapter 8b: Lesson Learned
It was the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, and Dominic was at bat. Tyler and Liam, each standing on one of the bases, grinned amusedly. "He's gonna do it," Tyler shouted, his eyes locked on Dom in amusement. "I can feel it."
"Of course, he is," Liam grinned from the other base. "He's got someone to impress."
As expected, the guy played up the moment, twirling the bat like a showoff. When he was done, he scanned the crowd.. until his eyes found yours. A quick wink from him made you scoff, and next to you, Talia and her friend freaked out.
"Oh my God, did I just see what I just saw?!" Talia squealed.
"That cocky guy," you muttered, shaking your head.
Talia nudged you. "You think your boy's got this?"
Rolling your eyes, a smirk creeped as you said, "He's not my boy, Tal," but you glanced back toward Dominic. Seeing him getting into position with determination on his posture, your smirk gradually turned into a small smile as you said, "But yeah, I think he does."
The pitch came—a fastball, cutting through the air like a bullet.
Crack!
The bat connected with the ball in a perfect, clean hit. The crowd erupted in wild cheers as the ball soared high over the outfield fence, a home run to win the game. Dominic ran the bases as his teammates rushed out of the dugout, waiting to celebrate at home plate as the announcer's voice boomed through the stadium speakers,
"Ladies and gentlemen, Dominic Hunt wins it for Stanford!"
As Dominic rounded third base, he lifted his gaze from the ground, scanning the crowd—and there you were.
You stood, clapping, a huge grin lighting up your face. Without thinking, Dom veered off his path after crossing home plate, jogging straight toward you.
Tyler and Liam watched, smirking. "Here~ we go," Tyler muttered, nudging Liam.
The team was still celebrating, the crowd still roaring, but Dominic didn't care. He gestured toward you and your friends, motioning to come down. You exchanged a look with Talia, who was bubbling with excitement. "Go! Go!" Talia urged, pushing you forward till you reluctantly made your way down, along with enthusiastic nudging of your friends.
In the middle of the field, Hunt was being lifted by his teammates, Tyler joining him in the air, with the crowd vibing off the energy of the win. When he was finally set down, laughing with his teammates, he suddenly remembered what—or rather who—he was looking for.
His eyes found you, now in the field, clapping along with the girls. Without wasting another second, he made his way toward you with a big grin on his face, chest still heaving from the adrenaline of the game. Face to face now, Dominic stepped closer, lowering his voice so only you could hear 'em.
"Wanna give 'em a show?"
"N—now?" you stammered, eyes darting around in panic. But before you could even process what he meant, the crowd erupted into a chant: "KISS! KISS! KISS!"
You snapped your head around in surprise, spotting Talia and June leading the charge, clapping and cheering. Frantically, you made a tone it down gesture, while Dominic still had his big grin on his face—chuckling, shaking his head at the whole absurdity. Across the field, Tyler and Liam joined in, grinning and hyping up the rest of the crowd—making the chants grow louder.
Letting out a scoff of disbelief— still, you couldn't hide the amused smile that crept onto your face. When a mischievous glint flashed in your eyes as you shrugged playfully. Dominic's lopsided grin widened, and in one swift movement, he leaned in, and you closed the gap.
You kissed him, right there, in the middle of the field, with the crowd around you exploding in whistles and cheers.
From the bleachers, Ray watched in disbelief, his expression souring, clearly irritated. He clenched his jaw, eyes narrowing until he finally looked away—while his new hotshot beside him followed his line of sight.. and soured. Meanwhile, Ana shakes her body in spasms, glaring at the scene with narrowed eyes, equally annoyed.
Tyler and Liam were losing it, hollering in celebration. "Atta boy, Hunt!" Liam shouted, pumping his fist in the air. Tyler laughed, shaking his head.
As the kiss lingered, Dominic pulled back slightly, his lips still close to yours. "Think that was enough of a show?" He glanced around with that cheeky grin of his but quickly refocused on you.
With your arms still draped on Dominic's shoulders, you caught sight of Ray in the corner of your eye, dragging his wife-to-be away from the crowd. But for the first time in a while.. you didn't care. You felt.. accomplished.
Turning your attention back to Dominic, you teased, "I don't know.. they might want an encore."
"Why am I starting to feel like you're enjoying this?" Dominic chuckled, clearly amused.
"You're a bad influence then,"
"Why, yes I am," he replied smugly, only for her to challenge him as she tilted her head, retracting slightly and narrowed her eyes.
"How unlucky I am,"
"Why, you gave me your luck."
Scoffing in amusement, you chuckled, "Smartass."
Hunt's smirk grew wider as he.. lowered his gaze.. to your lips. "We make a pretty good team, huh?"
A grin spread across your face as you stepped back just a little—just enough for them to release each other. For a second, Dom seemed confused.. till you placed your hand on his chin, playfully shaking it as you flirted,
"Better not get used to it."
With that, you smirked.. turned, and walked away. The girls laughed as you threw your arms around them.
Dominic stood there, scoffing in disbelief, unable to hide the wide grin that spread across his face. Rubbing his hands together as your warmth still lingers, he chuckled to himself, then glanced toward you again as you made your way up the stairs.
When you caught him looking, you gave him a small.. shy smirk, before continuing strutting away.
Suddenly, from behind, someone wrapped an arm around Dominic's shoulders and muttered,
"I have so many questions."
"What the hell just happened?!"
Liam stormed into the dugout like he was about to conduct a full-on interrogation. Behind him, Tyler leaned against his baseball bat, arms crossed, squinting like a detective in some cop show. His face screamed 'sus'.
Meanwhile, Hunt was sprawled out on the dugout bench, casually scrolling on his phone like he hadn't just blown everyone's minds. He didn't even bother looking up. "What? Just helping each other out."
Both Wyatt and Tyler stood there, eyes narrowed, not buying a single word. They exchanged glances, trying to figure out how much BS was in that statement. Dominic chuckled, clearly in a mood too good to care.
"We made a bet."
"THAT BET?!" Both of them yelled in unison, wide-eyed.
Dominic finally looked up, frowning, confused—until he realized what his bros long-term memory swam into. "Not that, assholes," he paused, then shrugged, "just a bet."
Rolling his eyes in impatience, Liam demanded, "Okay, you don't wanna spill? At least tell us how the hell this started!"
Dom sighed dramatically. "It started back at the bar."
"Stop playin', bro," Tyler muttered, still giving him the side-eye.
Seeing their serious faces, Dom sighed louder, putting his phone down and raising his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright! Remember when I got chased by Ana's family?" Dom asked as they both nodded, eager for details.
"That's actually the first time we met."
"What?!" they shouted in unison.
Dom looked up at the ceiling, clearly regretting this. "So, I was running for my life, right? And she just happened to be standing at the corner of the hallway. I panicked, so.. I grabbed her—and I.." he paused, looking away in hesitation. His bros' eyes widened, feeling the anticipation building as they leaned closer.. and closer.. "I, uh.." Dom swallowed, before he racked a hand through his hair and revealed,
"I kissed her."
"WHAT?!"
Both bros shouted so loud Dominic actually wheezed. They exchange surprise glances as he glared at them, exasperated. "You guys are killing me—"
"Ohhhh!" Tyler's eyes lit up with sudden realization. "So at the bar—when she said you 'forced yourself' on her—"
"Bro, we thought you turned into a legit psycho!"
"Not that he isn't though—"
"But now that we know it was that.." Wyatt gave Hunt a suspicious glance, smirking.
That's when they realized he was already leaning in with a big fake smile on his face. "Are you guys done roasting me, or—"
"So how did that turn into today's showdown?!" Liam ignored his sarcastic remark as his curiosity got the best of him, blurted the question with his big eyes.
"Ohhhh!" Tyler jumped in, like he was putting puzzle pieces together. "The party! I swear I saw him going upstairs with her—but I was like, Nah, it couldn't be—weren't they mortal enemies now—" he paused, staring at Hunt like he'd just cracked a Sherlock case.
Wyatt, moving his eyes back and forth between his two bros, had his eyes widened as he sensed Dominic's awkward shifting in his seat. "Wait. Did you—!"
"Nothing. happened, okay?!" Hunt yelled, throwing his hands in the air. "She was just having a bad day and—look, almost, but—"
"Playboy of the century for a reason—"
"Well nothing happened." Dominic rolled his eyes, running a hand over his face. "No, dude. She was crying, and we—like.. slept it off. Passed out soon as she hit the bed."
There was dead silence. Both bros stared at him, jaws hanging.
Wyatt squinted. "Wait. Did.. did I just see you—smile?!"
"YES YOU DID—wait, did we just see him smile for not having sex?!" Cavill exclaimed, eyes wide as if the universe had just flipped upside down.
Dominic stood there, eyes narrowing. He cleared his throat awkwardly. "Alright, I'm done." And with that, he grabbed his stuff and stormed off, leaving the bros behind, still gaping like desperate Nemos.
