Deep in the forest, I look for the spot where I left the dead fuckboy. Every spot looks the same. A low plane rumbles overhead. The relentless smell of wet wood hangs like a thick blanket smothering everything. Tall oaks and young birches tower around me. A wall of dead leaves is piled up against a line of maple trees, probably from flooding.

The deeper I walk into the forest, the quieter it gets. The tranquil silence quickly turns eerie as I look down at my phone and see that there's no cell signal.

I weave through the trees, my feet finding solid ground with some steps, then sinking ankle deep into muck with other steps. My foot gets stuck for a bit and I'm forced to lean on the trunk of a tree for support. Trudging forward, I try to find the roots of trees to step on as I push through.

My eyes are lowered to the ground, looking for some kind of sign, like a decomposing hand sticking out from the mud, or the tip of a running shoe jutting out from a pile of dead leaves. I didn't bury the body, it should be sticking out. I wouldn't be surprised if an entire skeleton was just sunbathing on the soft ground.

There's a flash of light in the dirt up ahead between two pine trees. A bony vine hangs across my path and I duck under it. I push through branches, pine needles pricking the palms of my hand. The sticky smell of pine sap invades my nostrils. The shiny thing on the ground is shimmering brighter now, reflecting the sky light seeping through the canopy.

I'm standing over the shiny thing, a piece of steel glistening through a wet bed of orange pine needles. Reaching down, I pinch the steel and easily pull the thing out. It's a circular object covered with soil. I brush the soil off with my bare hands and polish the thing on my shirt.

I clasp the edges of the round thing with my fingertips and examine it, sparkly now, and clean.

It's a braided steel bracelet.
