To Grenetta one morning.
"By me
And by yourself.
By a man
Who will be named your husband,
Who loves you more than anyone else does."
"But Mother,"
I say,
"What if I don't want a man?"
Mother laughs and says,
"Women love men.
Only a true woman does."
She leads Grenetta
To the door.
"You are perfect
I would never ask for any more."
Grenetta's mother walks ahead
But Grenetta waits at t door
And thought of what Mother said,
"Women love men,"
"No," Grenetta whispered.
