8. Something New
"I. Fucking. Knew it."
You were absolutely livid.
All you had wanted to do was find Midoriya.
You hadn't gotten a chance to talk to him after the calvary battle. It was like all of a sudden him and Todoroki had disappeared.
You had been looking for them, slowly following Bakugou—who seemed to always know where everyone was. You still weren't sure if that was intentional or not.
Your search came to a pause when you were stopped by a very anxious looking Momo.
"I told you I didn't believe it!" You snapped. "Oh my God my dad is going to kill me!" You didn't even want to look up to the announcer stand.
You could feel him, staring daggers at you through the bandages.
You wouldn't look, you couldn't.
As everyone began to gather forward, you tried your best to hide your face behind the pom-poms you were still holding—only to cover your body.
You couldn't believe those stupid boys tricked you into dressing as a cheerleader. When you found them you were going to-
"Aizawa-San?"
You didn't even want to look over, though his sweet voice was alluring and made your head turn ever so slightly.
Midoriya's face was bright red now that he had seen your getup. He shamelessly recognized that it was the most revealing thing you had ever worn.
"How did they manage to get you to wear that?" He asked with a small, almost goofy smile.
You threw your pom-pom at him. "Stop making fun of me!"
"I'm not!" He laughed as he tossed it right back. "You look...adorable." He looked away bashfully, enraging you even more.
"I'm not adorable you asshole!" You screamed as you slammed your fist onto his shoulder. "I'm a strong bitch who-"
"Aizawa-San." He held up his finger to your lips, motioning to the board where they posted the matchups for the tournament you all were to participate in.
Your eyes went wide and you smacked away his hand. "Dammit you distracted me you dipshit." You walked over to the board sluggish and mortified.
You squinted your eyes and scanned the board for your name.
Aizawa & Aoyama.
"Aoyama?" You whispered to yourself. You remembered coming across him a few times in class but he mostly kept to himself. His quirk seemed almost unreliable. You didn't like that you weren't sure how this match would go.
You noticed Midoriya was fighting against Shinso, the boy you promised to settle things with here. Then you saw Sero was paired up with Todoroki.
You were jealous that both of your rivals were paired up against your classmates.
"Sero you lucky bastard!" You ran up to him.
"What?" He spit out a laugh.
"You get to fight Todoroki! I'm so jealous!" You whined.
"Aizawa are you crazy? Todoroki has such a strong quirk! Who would want to fight him?" Mina gasped as she stifled a laugh.
Your eyes darkened. "I wanna crush that bastard right under my foot." You clenched your fists as your eyes settled on the clueless half-and-half boy.
"Aizawa has switched into scary mode." Sero whispered to Mina. The class all talked about this scary mode you had, they constantly teased you about the different sides of yourselves.
It was absolutely infuriating.
"I'll show you scary-" before you could charge at him, Izuku grabbed your arm and tugged you towards him.
"Shouldn't you save that energy for the match?" He spoke softly into your ear.
Flustered, you shoved him off you. "What's wrong with you? Perv! Get off me!" You swatted him away and he was surprised by your flustered expression, being that he had no idea what he did to cause it.
"Izuku Midoriya, that's you, yeah?" The familiar voice sent shivers down both your spines.
You were even more surprised when Midoriya's mouth was covered by the tail of your classmate. "Don't answer that guy Midoriya."
**
"You can't make me."
"But you would be so cute! All jumpy and floaty!"
"Come on Y/n-Chan!"
You weren't sure what it was that finally convinced you. Maybe it was the insistence, or maybe it was the usage of your first name.
You had never had friends who used it before.
It left you with such a joyous feeling.
**
Back in your gym uniforms, you sat up in the stadium with your class.
You felt oddly lonely without Midoriya by your side. You were surrounded with your classmates and definitely had friends to sit with—but you felt yourself craving his company.
You both had spent a lot of time together since the USJ.
It just wasn't something you were wanting to let go of, even though you knew you had to.
Izuku's match was starting up and you watched intently, gripping the edges of your seat.
His facial expressions were so clear to you even from so high up.
"He...He fell for it." You whispered, remembering Ojiro's explanation of Shinso's quirk. You were devastated for your friend as you watched his angry expression turn lifeless.
"What's this? Midoriya is frozen in place?" You heard them announce, shocked really. "He's not even twitching! Could this be Shinso's quirk?"
"Deku?" You turned your head and saw the nervous expression written across Uraraka's face.
"He'll win I'm sure of it." You forced a smile.
And you weren't wrong, though it was incredibly nerve wracking. As soon as Midoriya regained control it was over quicker than it had started.
"He also got you with that shoulder toss too huh Bakugou?!" You could hear the smug teasing oozing from Kaminari.
"Shut it dunce face."
"Aw poor baby Bakugou can't handle it when someone points out when someone got the upper hand on him." You mocked the boy with a pouting lip, and stuck out your tongue when he began death glaring in your direction.
"Shut it eye bags! How about you go back to ogling that damn nerd and leave me alone." He spat.
You felt a bit of heat rush to your cheeks.
"Ogling? Fancy word for a boy with a firecracker for a brain."
"I'm going to kill you-"
"Midoriya! Nice job on your match!"
You flicked off Bakugou and turned.
"We saved you a-"
Izuku sat down next to you. "He was kinda scary." He admitted quietly, only to you.
"You didn't seem too worried." You crossed your arms, leaning back in your seat.
"Oh I was, I just couldn't control myself at all for a minute there." He grinned and you were glad he wasn't beating himself up about it.
"What did he say? To get you to snap?"
Midoriya paused for a moment, as he remembered the mostly one sided conversation between Shinso and himself.
"He insulted Ojiro."
You nodded. "That makes sense, you're very loyal-"
"And he threatened you."
Your body stiffened.
"That's what really got me talking." He chuckled nervously as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Me?" You whispered.
He nodded sheepishly. "As soon as I reacted I knew you would've scolded me if you could have heard the conversation!" He smiled and leaned back almost as if he was worried you would hit him for even saying that. "I was glad I was able to break out of it. Thinking about you reminds me that I have a strong resolve."
You were definitely blushing.
"You've helped me a lot Aizawa-San. I know you think I'm the one helping you, but I owe you so much." He beamed and your heart fluttered.
You noticed some of your classmates were eyeing the two of you as you had the quiet discussion.
"I-"
You were cut off by the surprising use of Todoroki's quirk, and the overwhelming coldness that took over the stands.
Todoroki had completely immobilized Sero, trapping him in a gigantic prison of ice.
"Still wishing you were going to fight him Y/n-San?" One of you friends called out.
You didn't even bother answering them. You were stilled into place as if you had been frozen down there yourself. You felt your lips tug into a small smirk.
"You okay Aizawa-San?" Midoriya asked, placing a hand on your shoulder.
You nodded your head slowly. "I really want to kick his ass."
**
"Stop it!" You flicked Midoriya's head and he stiffened.
Kaminari's match started and Midoriya was already way too into it. You had noticed Uraraka staring warily at the boy, which is when you realized he was back into the notebook—muttering incoherently.
"You're scaring Ochaco!" You hissed.
"It's okay Y/n-San." She smiled as she moved down a row to sit next to the two of you. "He's just so dedicated."
You turned your head and Izuku was looking away embarrassed.
You snorted, rolling your eyes at him like you usually would.
"I don't mean to be strange!" Midoriya laughed nervously, holding up his notebook. "I'm just adding everyone into my hero analysis. I even have a page for you and Aizawa-San. Though hers is harder to fill out." He admitted grumpily.
Your head snapped towards him. "Me? Hard to fill out?" You were surprised, being that the two of you spent the most time together out of everyone.
And he had fought you countless of times.
He nodded sheepishly. "Your quirk is rather confusing."
You blinked. "How?"
He shrugged as he flipped back to your page. You couldn't help but notice the drawing he had sketched out of you across the lined paper. You were drawn so accurately in your hero costume.
You looked—beautiful. You wondered if that was how he really saw you.
You opened your mouth to compliment him on it but shut it once more when you noticed he had moved his hand to cover it up. He hadn't noticed that you had seen it.
Weird.
"The more I study it the more it seems like a mutation of quirks."
"Well I don't have answers for that one buddy." You sighed and you noticed him stiffen. "I don't know who I inherited my quirk from. Why it has its random little pieces." You waved your hand at him dismissively.
You hated conversations like this.
You didn't know why you turned it into that direction.
It was probably because you wanted to be able to answer those questions. To be able to help Midoriya accurately fill out his notebook page of you.
You wanted to share that piece of yourself with him.
But you couldn't.
That information wasn't even shared with you.
**
No matter which way you looked at it, something about your upcoming match was making you feel strange.
Once Iida's match began you left to wait in your designated area.
You weren't even sure how to prepare for this. If you had your scarf with you it would have been simple.
Aoyama didn't seem all that worrisome, but you knew better than to doubt your classmates.
Everyone there was incredibly smart and talented in their own ways.
You'd have to remember that.
"Mademoiselle, this should be over quickly." Aoyama held his hands behind his head, his laser pointing prominently at you. The two of you were waiting for your signal to start the match.
You didn't say anything, you just eyed the boy.
"How do you think this is going to go?" Uraraka whispered to Deku. She was getting very anxious about her match. Her opponent was a formidable one and she wasn't sure if she was going to be able to hold herself to the same level as you all. She had no pride in herself yet and that was disheartening.
It felt pointless, but she still promised herself to try her best.
For now, she would distract herself with thoughts of you.
"Aizawa-San has this one." He spoke with zero hesitation. She noticed that she had never heard him speak so surely before.
She smiled gently, watching the way his eyes watched you.
He was enchanted, he just didn't know it yet.
With that she stood, her absence went unnoticed.
As she left, she left that lingering want for him behind.
Izuku Midoriya was yours. She knew that. She would throw in the towel now.
She had bigger things to prepare for.
The match started.
You were barely given time to think before Aoyama began to attack.
You knew from previous experience that his quirk caused major kickbacks, and it did it quickly.
You slid under his beam, planting your foot behind you to get a strong start before gliding through the air.
He looked frightened.
He wasn't amazing with his range of motion yet. He struggled to readjust his aim when you moved so quickly.
The way he looked you in the eye when your hand came in contact with his shoulder sent shivers down your spine.
With one look at you he could tell how much strength you had over him. He didn't even feel the need to try.
Which made your win feel bitter in the end.
***
Their fight was loud, miserably slow.
You didn't go back out to watch it, you just stood by a wall and allowed yourself to listen.
Your hearing had never been amazing, but you could hear each time Bakugou set off an explosion—and you could sense each time Ochaco sent a rock to float in the sky.
You wondered why you could feel that, if there was some sort of connection there.
Could that be it? Did you have a relation to Ochaco somehow?
"Idiot." You whispered to yourself, finding your own set of stairs to sulk on.
You learned a long time ago that it was pointless to fantasize about your past. Fantasies only led to disappointment.
You couldn't help but remember the look in Aoyama's eyes. It reminded you so much like that villain at the USJ—the one who feared your eyes.
You had never thought much about them before, they always had a sharper look to them—more so than anyone you knew. You had always like them though, a badass little quirk to your appearance.
It was unnerving really.
"I don't understand where your strength comes from."
His chilling voice was the last one you had expected to hear, let alone wanted too.
You allowed your eyes to trail up and meet his own, though he wasn't looking at you at all. His eyes were fixed on the stairs.
"There's just a drastic difference between the two of us. I can't tell which one is ahead." He admitted.
You wondered if this was his way of apologizing.
It probably wasn't.
"I've been training my whole life to be a hero." You put it simply.
"So have I." He retorted
Now your eyes met.
You let out a hum before looking away, your hand placed firmly under your chin to hold up your head that wanted nothing more than to fall forward.
"What's your secret Aizawa?"
Ah, there was that word again.
"I don't have any secrets." You were no longer interested in talking to him, not about this while you were still potential opponents.
You had no desire to share your training with a boy who didn't deem you worthy only hours earlier.
"Everyone has secrets."
"Why don't you leave her alone? Icy hot dipshit."
You hadn't even heard their match end.
Bakugou grabbed your arm and yanked you up—you ignored the sharp pain that fought It's way through your shoulder.
"I was simply conversing."
"Yeah but you're freaking eye bags out!"
"Calling people names like that is quite rude." Todoroki sighed.
Bakugou was done speaking to him, you were glad to be honest.
He pulled you away from the confusing boy, and for the first time you let him.
What you weren't expecting was him pulling you around a corner and pushing you up against a wall.
"The hell are you doing?" You snapped.
He almost looked relived to you, and he was. He didn't like seeing you all moody like that. He couldn't see why you had a reason to be, you had won your match for goodness sake.
He thought about your expression as you dragged Aoyama out of bounds the whole time he was in his prep room.
"I bet you were expecting that damn nerd weren't you?" He scoffed. "Sorry to disappoint."
Your brows furrowed. "What are you getting at? Hurry up and spit it out before I kick the shit out of you."
He was way to close to you.
There was not nearly enough space between your noses.
He needed to get away from you right now before you—
"Kacchan?"
Midoriya didn't look happy.
"Buzz off you damn nerd." You noticed he was still gripping your wrist, now pressing it up against the wall as if he was trying to make this moment seem more intimate than it was.
Now you really were going to kick the shit out of him.
Why was he so insistent on pissing you off?
"Baby Katsuki is just mad because I was sulking and I wouldn't tell him why." You knead him in the stomach. He didn't double over but the shock caused him to step back.
Once you shoved him away, you walked over to Midoriya.
"Good luck on your match. Don't lose so I can kick your ass in front of the whole world."
"Don't you do that enough in training?" His smile was small, but it was existent. That would be enough for now.
You shrugged. "I will never get enough of being better than you."
He laughed, shaking his head and narrowing his eyes. "You're cruel."
You simply blew kisses at him before walking back off to the stand.
Midoriya's face fell serious.
His eyes landed on Bakugou. "Try something like that again, and I'll make you regret it."
The threat sent a weird feeling through Bakugou. He had never seen this much determination in Izuku's eyes, it was almost frightening. He smirked through his feelings and walked away from the boy.
"As if."
