Chapter 4
Helen woke up the next morning to see her foster father off at the docks. After a few minutes of brief silence between the two, they are at the docks, Helen just simply said "Be safe and find the nest" before running off towards her home. The reason she didn't just hug him or anything was that she hated goodbyes and hated to hear if her foster father was killed by the defensive dragons. Quickly, Helen rebraided her hair and got herself something to eat for breakfast before grabbing a sword hanging off her foster father's wall of weapons and shields and heading out to dragon training.
When she arrived, she could see the rest of the teens were there, as well as Gobber, waiting for the gate to open. "Welcome to dragon training," Gobber announced as he lifted up the gate to let them in.
"No turning back," Audun said clutching his axe tightly in his right hand as he lead the group of teens into the arena.
Everyone carefully walked into the arena while staring at it in awe. Their parents and ancestors had been made Vikings here and now it was there turn. Helen couldn't have felt more out of place because she didn't belong here and never will. "I hope I get some serious burns," Tuffnut said excitedly pulling Helen out of her thoughts of what her birth parents would say if they saw her killing dragons to try and fit in.
"I'm hoping for some mauling, like on my shoulder or lower back," Ruffnut replied in agreement, which was very rare, to Helens shock.
"Yah, it's only fun if you get a scar out of it," Audun remarked smiling at the thought of a great scar across his eye to show that he was the best warrior Viking of Berk.
(Snorts) "No kidding right? Pain, you gotta love it here on Berk," Helen said sarcastically turning everyone's attention on her.
"Oh great, who let her in?" Tuffnut asked in shock as he thought she wasn't supposed to be here and would only slow them down.
"My father Stoick the Vast," Helen stated proudly as she held her sword over her left shoulder, and placed her right hand on her right hip while smirking at him.
(Like hers but imagine the sword over the shoulder.)
"Foster father," Snotlout said smugly reminding her that she is not a Berkian.
"Well, at least I have my life figured out with Stoick on proving myself to him through training. What do you have figured out for your life little cousin," Helen remarked back in a smug manner reminding everyone that she is older than Snotlout by a month.
Everyone snickered at that part while Snotlout just frowned angrily and was about to say something when Gobber stepped in and said "Let's get started. The recruit who does best, will win the honor of killing his first dragon in front of the entire village."
Helen flinched a little but it wasn't noticed by anyone as they were in awe of the prize that awaited them. "Helen won't survive a day in here, so does that disqualify here or...?" Snotlout asked mockingly making Tuffnut laugh at that part while Ruffnut just chuckled a bit before sending an apologetic look.
"I don't know, is the size of your ego the same size as a dragon? Cause if so then you best get out of here cause this is for Vikings only," Helen said as she clicked her tongue against her teeth, in a shaming manner, before she said her words in a smug tone while smiling smugly at his shocked reaction.
That made the group chuckle a bit before the teens headed over towards the center of the arena and stood in a straight line. Helen stayed where she was and debated on whether she joined them or stay in the back where she can just be invisible to them. "Way to hold yourself back there Helen and don't worry about fitting in, if your smack talk is as sharp as your skills then you will do just fine in training," Gobber said reassuringly as he led her over to the teens and placed her at the end of the line next to Fishlegs.
Helen nodded her head to Gobber in thanks before standing straight and putting on a stone cold Viking face, ready for battle. "Behind these doors are just a few of the many species you will learn to fight," Gobber lectured as he forward to where he had every one of the teens eyes on him before continuing, "The Deadly Nadder."
"Speed: 8, Armor: 16," Fishlegs said in an serious and happy voice combined.
"The Hideous Zippleback," continued Gobber not listening to Fishlegs at all.
"Plus 11 stealth times 2," Fishlegs continued making Helen more nervous being around him as his only acquaintance friend.
"The Monsterous Nightmare."
"Firepower: 15."
"The Terrible Terror."
"Attack: 8, Venom: 12."
"CAN YOU STOP THAT???!!!!!" Gobber yelled out in annoyance to Fishlegs before grabbing a lever, that held the log that held the banging door in place, and continuing with listing off the last dragon in their dialogue, "And the Gronckle."
"Jaw Strength: 8," Fishlegs whispered to Helen and the teens making Helen look at him with a scared and concerned face before facing the front with a stone cold Viking face once again.
"Whoa, whoa, wait, aren't you gonna teach us first?" Snotlout asked Gobber in an almost scared tone.
"Why? Is my baby cousin beginning to get scared?" Helen asked in a mocking tone making the teens, and Gobber, laugh while Audun looked at Helen in amazement.
"No, I'm not scared and we are definitely not related," Snotlout said in a sneer that made Helen pale and remember why she doesn't belong here.
Ruffnut smacked him over the head and said "Can it Snotlout! Don't let Stoick, her foster father and your uncle, hear you say that in front of him!"
"Thank you Ruffnut and I was about to say the same thing to him. But Snotlout, remember that she is your family member through Valka's soul and heart. However on this cheery note, I believe in learning on the job," Gobber said before he pulled the lever down allowing the log to pull itself up and bursting out from the doors came the Gronckle Gobber just mentioned.
Helen and the teens quickly scattered in different directions to not get hit by the Gronckle as it went past them and hit the wall, while Gobber told them "Today is about Survival. If you get blasted your dead."
And out, Helen thought to herself as she ran.
The Gronckle spotted some rocks lying around on the floor and began to chomp at them greedily. "Quick, what's the first thing your going to need?" Gobber asked them while the Gronckle was distracted.
"A doctor, for when this is all over?" Snotlout asked in pain.
"Plus five-speed?" Fishlegs asked in fright.
"No, you idiots. A shield," Helen shouted in sync with Audun as she remembered from her early training back home.
"Shields, go!" Gobber yelled out to the teens in a commanding tone.
Quickly, they all ran over and grabbed their own shields. Snotlout quickly grabbed the one in the middle of the floor in the arena, that Helen was gonna grab, and ran off. Helen quickly changed directions and ran off towards a shield lying against the wall ready to be taken. Hurrying, she ran right over to that shield to strap it onto her arm to use as cover for training. "The most important piece of equipment is your shield. If you must make a choice between a sword or a shield, take the shield," Gobber lectured to the teens while Helen strapped on her shield, the way her birth mother taught her to, before heading off into another direction away from the Gronckle.
The twins began arguing over a single shield, making Helen run to them and bang Tuffnut on the head with the butt of her sword, making him lose his grip on the shield, before kicking a shield, lying on the ground, towards him and running off. "Oops, now Helen's sword has blood on it," Ruffnut said in a teasing tone before chuckling in her weird way.
That made Tuffnut smack his shield, against her face. "Oops, now this shield has blood on it too," Tuffnut remarked back in an also teasing tone, as well as a smug tone, while making a mocking face at her.
They made them get into another argument and were so wrapped up in it that they didn't see the Gronckle coming straight at them and fire a blast between the two making them spin, from the impact on contact it made with both of their shields, and fall onto the floor of the arena dizzy. "Tuffnut. Ruffnut. You're out. Great job with trying to provide a shield to help protect your comrade in battle Helen. Always remember to stay sharp and protect your fellow Vikings on the battlefield," Gobber lectured to the teens while praising Helen for her skills and telling the twins they are done for in this round.
"Now those shields are good for another thing. Noise. Make lot's of it to throw off a dragon's aim," Gobber said continuing his lecture to them.
Quickly, what's left of the teens began to bang their weapons, of their own choice, against their shields making the Gronckle, that was facing them head on to see how many opponents it had left, dizzy and confused. Sorry mom and dad. But this has to look real, Helen said in her mind as she banged her sword hard against her shield, while grimacing in hurt at the pain she must be causing that dragon by doing this, before maneuvering her way around the Gronckle with the rest of the teens in a circle.
"All dragons have a limited shot, how many does a Gronckle have?" Gobber asked quizzing them once again while the dragon was distracted.
"Five?" Snotlout asked confused as he circled around the Gronckle in the opposite direction Helen was going.
"No, you moron. Then there wouldn't be enough firepower to help blast your dragon ego into oblivion," Helen remarked in an angry tone while running towards the opposite side of him stopping long enough to smack him upside the head with her shield before continuing.
"No, six!" Fishlegs shouted enthusiastically holding his shield up high making the Gronckle focus its attention solely on him.
"Correct, six. That's one for each of you," Gobber said in a proud tone.
"I really don't think that it's one for..." Fishlegs was about to say to correct Gobber but the Gronckle blasted his shield off making him run in fear of it, towards the gate door where Ruffnut and Tuffnut were.
"Fishlegs, out," Gobber pointed out in an annoyed tone while rolling his eyes.
Helen quickly hid behind a plank of wood and silently began to make her way out of there, seeing that the Gronckles back was to her, while keeping a keen eye on it. Suddenly, it fired a blast at Snotlout and Audun but Audun rolled out of the way of the blast while Snotlout was so busy being distracted by talking to him that his shield took the blast head on. "Snotlout, your done," Gobber pointed out in a smug tone.
Soon, Audun's summersault rolls found himself standing next to Helen as both of them kept an eye on the Gronckle facing them, waiting for it to prepare its shot. "So I guess we are the only two left. But that's if you can keep up," Helen remarked in a smug tone.
"Only if you can keep up," Audun remarked back in an equally smug tone before running off in front of her making her follow him as the Gronckle fired the shot that missed them completely.
"Two more left, think you can out last that?" Audun asked in a challenging manner as they ran across the ring together in sync.
"Don't know, can you?" Helen remarked back before running off away from him and taking another direction away from the Gronckle.
It fired its shot at her but only hit the ground instead, completely missing her, and began cornering her. "One shot left," Gobber said stating the obvious and oblivious to what the Gronckle was doing until too late.
"HICCUP!!" Audun, Ruffnut, and Gobber shouted in horror forgetting that her real name was Helen.
Helen only furrowed her brows in determination, and concentration, as she ran toward the wall only to run up it, the way her older brother had taught her to, and jump high in the air over the Gronckle. The Gronckle was too amazed by her own stunt to see where it was going that it hit its head hard against the wall and collapsed onto the arena floor. Helen then landed on her own two feet onto the arena floor and jumped backward into a summersault, while grunting in effort, before standing right back up, after finishing it, facing the back of the Gronckle, that was lying on the ground in front of the wall of the arena, smiling in happiness of completing her very own training stunt she's worked on since she was five. Jean De Zela is very proud of you, her mother's voice said in her head before disappearing.
"Whoa, how did you do that?" Fishlegs asked in amazement.
"My older brother taught that to me. He was the bestest and most strongest warrior back home. You guys should've seen him in person, he was also my mentor in training me," Helen stated proudly facing the amazed teens, who were still standing against the gate on her left side staring at her in amazement.
"Mentor in what? Dragon training?" Snotlout asked in a mocking manner.
"Close, but still not too far behind. (Snotlout widens his eyes in shock and became speechless) He was actually my mentor in teaching me how to fight in self-defense whenever my mother and father weren't available," Helen replied in a casual manner.
"You never really talk about your family like this before Helen. Why now?" Audun asked in curiosity as he came over to where the teens stood and turned to face her.
"I don't know, maybe it's mostly because I don't feel the pain of my loss while talking about one of my happiest memories I had with my family. So I guess you can say that I am going through the process of accepting my loss slowly and it started happening yesterday. I guess," Helen replied in a sheepish tone before looking down at the floor and held up her sword to her face to see her reflection in it.
"Well, at least ye' are getting to the point where you can talk about your greatest memories you ever had with ye' birth family lass. Now remember one thing and one thing only. A dragon will always, always, go for the kill," Gobber said to Helen reassuringly before getting into the last lecture for the day to knock that little message into their heads.
"Class dismissed for today but we are having supper tonight to discuss what went wrong today, so best get thinking on what ya did wrong to help fix yer mistakes," Gobber stated before walking over to the passed-out Gronckle and began dragging it back into it's cage while the teens began filing out of the arena.
Helen walked slowly behind the group lost in thought of why the dragons didn't go for the kill back home. Because the dragons knew that our ancestors would never hurt them when they proved it to them by defending the their very own hatchlings from invaders, her birth mothers voice said in her head before disappearing again.
Guess she is there to help me answer my toughest questions I can't find on Berk, Helen thought to herself after a moment's thought on why her mother was answering that question.
So if a dragon always goes for the kill here on Berk, then something must seriously be going on in this world that isn't right. And I'm gonna find out what, Helen thought with determination as she quickly headed home away from the teens to get some answers.
