Chapter 7: Hallway*
Dawn's Pov
All I could think about was the look Rosa gave me before she walked out my home. They were sincere and apologetic... She appreciated that I cared to help her, but never did I expect her to be the kind of person to refuse help and compassion from another person. I don't know if this is the case, but she seemed as if she went through something that kept her from accepting anyone into her life.
I had figured to tell Nate about what happened, but I didn't get the response I expected. He was cold and acted like what I said shouldn't have been said to him. Of all things, he thinks she hates him... that's far from true! If she hated him, she wouldn't have been blushing when I mentioned him!
"They're too much..." I sighed, tired as I walked to school after getting dropped off. I didn't get any sleep last night. Nate and Rosa was all I thought about... I just wish I knew more of their story "It's none of my business... but still! I'm their friend!" I said a bit too loud, making a few look at me. I cleared my throat and kept walking.
"What about being someone's friend?" I jumped, seeing my friend, May, looking at me weird from my side "What's wrong? You look like you didn't sleep last night" I sighed.
"I didn't" we entered the school together "I just had a lot on my mind" I brushed my hair with my fingers "I even forgot to brush my teeth and hair"
"I got some gum" May smiled "And you can borrow my brush" I smiled back.
"Thank you..." I was lucky that I got to school before class started, so May and I went to the restroom to freshen up. I had brought some makeup with me, now I'll be able to hide the bags under my eyes for awhile before I'll have to reapply for the dinner party we're having later with the rest of our friends.
"What's up? You've been spaced out since I saw you outside" May said, plucking her eyebrows, then smelled her armpits. I swear, this girl and I are total opposites, yet we work.
"It's nothing. Just a lot of drama"
"Tv?" I snorted.
"Let's go with that" I thought to myself before speaking again "It was a late show that I wanted to see, so I didn't sleep because of it" I lied.
"Ohh! What's it about?"
"A boy and girl couple had a mysterious past together and they act like the other hates the other, but it's totally the opposite!" I groaned, upset that I can't be involved in their situation! I just want to help! "It's so frustrating!" May laughed.
"That's how tv dramas lure you in! I don't think I heard of the one you were talking about. What's it called" I sweat dropped, not knowing how to continue.
"I don't know... I got so frustrated that I turned it off" that was sort of the way to keep her from knowing I told Nate what happened and he hung up on me. I wonder how he'll react when I see him later "anyway" I sighed, fixing myself "Are you still on for dinner tonight with everyone?" She smiled big with her slightly sharp canine teeth.
"Wouldn't miss it!" She crossed her arms "I can't wait to get my hands on some good food! The food at the hospital is just so gross"
"How's that going? You have a specific patient you were helping" she nodded and walked out with me.
"I am. The Pokémon is still under a coma. The trainer is trying her best to pay the bills, even if her mom works at the same hospital. The trainer refuses to let her help her" refuses to let her own mom help her?
"Who is this trainer?"
"I am unauthorized to tell you that. I am a Nurse's assistant, the assistant for the nurse that's the mom of that trainer. That's all I can tell you, but I can't tell you who the trainer is"
"Do you know who the trainer is?" She nodded and looked around the halls for someone.
"Of course I do. She comes every now and then, only to come to pay a bill and leave. She's not allowed to see her Pokémon since there's a lot of sensitive machines being used"
"So this trainer is a girl and refuses to take help even from her own mom... Can I guess who this trainer is?" I have the feeling I know who it is.
"I rather not play that game" May nervously laughed "I can't give you that information even if you do guess right. There's no point" I sighed, understanding "come on, we better get to class before the bell rings!"
The hallways were soon starting to clear out with students heading to their home room classes. May and I quickened our pace to our homeroom class before I spotted a couple talking secretly in a hall that had a door leading to the side of the library. I stopped and watched them from a corner.
"Dawn! What are you doing?!" May whispered. I shhed her and observed the couple, wanting to know if there was a fight going on. Since they were the kind to make up easily, I wanted to see if I can find a way to help my friends.
"What is it? We're going to be late" Calem said.
"I wanted to talk to you about Rosa" Serena responded. Huh??
"What is it?"
"I haven't been honest with you about what I talked to her about... That day, I actually ended up asking her to come with us to the dinner the other day" my eyes widened.
"You did what? You told me you were only thinking about asking her. Why would you do that? You know she's not that kind of person to be around people. All I asked was to talk to her. Inviting her was out of the question. I told you that after you told me that day" he held the ridge of his nose "Why are you barely telling me now instead of the day I asked you to talk to her?"
"I've been trying to figure things out a bit longer! It's already Friday, so there's no point in investing anymore. She's just a complicated person" Serena frowned "She deserves more... I've asked her every day. I really do hope she comes..." Calem sighed.
"After so many days, you got nothing out of her. It's none of our business, but even Nate won't talk to me. He was acting weird this morning" I walked towards them "Hey Dawn, what's up?" Serena got defensive all of a sudden due to her jealous nature.
"Nate and Rosa" they put their full attention on me "You are concerned about them as well?"
"Of course we are. Nate is our friend" Calem said.
"And Rosa is so complicated!" Serena pouted.
"They have a past. I know that much" the two looked at each other surprised. May walked up to us.
"What's going on? Nate and Rosa? That's a weird thing to talk about" she held her chin "they're both popular in their own ways, with Nate being social and Rosa being anti-social. She doesn't talk unless she has to and all Nate ever does is talk. Putting them in the same sentence is pretty weird" she rubbed her hands together with a smirk "I think I like where this is going" I giggled.
"Rosa was injured last night from a fall. She refused my help and left. I told Nate about it. He got defensive about it and hung up on me. Doesn't that seem suspicious?" I asked.
"You know... now that you mention it" Serena gasped "Nate knows everyone in this school, but I never seen him talk to Rosa!" Calem agreed.
"They walk pass each other in the hallways all the time. They never looked at each other, now that you mention it. Nate had called me the other day to find his bookmark in the library, but Rosa had already took it. When I claimed I didn't find it, I met up with him later on and noticed a disappointed aura around him"
"How weird!" Serena gasped.
"That has to mean something!" May's eyes sparkled "It's like I'm watching a tv show!" She blinked a few times "Like that tv show you told me about!" I sweatdropped, wondering if she understood what I meant.
"You witnessed it before when I talked to Rosa in the library, she freaked out and blushed so much when I mentioned Nate. Nate told me that she hated him" I opened my arms "Something doesn't add up! I can't stand to see them like this! You guys... We have to do something!"
"B-But it's none of our business" Calem frowned "I admit, I wanted to know more about the situation. I am a man of knowledge, so I wanted to understand for myself. If the situation is fine on its own, there's no need for further actions. They are not in each other's life, and it seems fine that way. Nate is happy and Rosa likes being alone"
"Rosa deserves more than this!" I frowned "Things don't add up! You should had heard how he was talking when I told him about her injures. He sounded hurt" I looked down "I don't want my friends being sad... and even if Rosa doesn't want friends... I feel like" I bit my lips "She's trying to keep herself from getting hurt"
"All of this is none of your business" We looked back to see Hugh leaning on the wall.
"Hugh!" Calem blinked "How long were you there?"
"Long enough. I would expect myself to be late, but I didn't expect you all to do the same. It turns out that you're all talking about something that shouldn't be in any concern to you" I walked up to him.
"Nate is your friend too! You should know more about him than we do! Please, do you know why Nate would sound so defensive when I talked to him about Rosa?" He snorted "It seems that they had a past together! A misunderstanding!"
"Let me stop you right there. Those two are stupid enough to believe in their own story. Whether Nate thinks Rosa hates him or she thinks he hates her, that doesn't concern us"
"Rosa thinks Nate hates her?" May asked "But Nate likes everyone and gets along with them. That doesn't make sense"
"We have a right to know!" Serena pouted.
"No you don't. I don't have any intentions in telling you anything about them" Hugh crossed his arms.
"You do know something!" I glared "Spill it out!"
"Why should I? It's none of your business"
"We care about them! We're all friends! I have never seen Nate so down before... this just isn't right! Do you not care that much that they're living a lie and sad?" Hugh sighed.
"Want to know something?" We all listened carefully "I'm not going to tell you what happened, but I can tell you this. The three of us? Me, Nate, and Rosa? We were all childhood friends" we knew Hugh and Nate were friends before meeting us, but Rosa too? "this was so long ago that even you all weren't living here at the time. Trainer school wasn't even a thing in this city. The three of us spend a lot of time together, but most of all, they spend more time with each other than with me because I got stuck babysitting a lot" he shrugged "Does that satisfy you?"
"They were friends back then?" Serena cupped her chin.
"That's crazy. We never heard about this!" Calem spoke up "When we went with Nate to the library, they were just casual! Like they didn't know each other!"
"Didn't you notice that Nate hadn't said a word to her?" Hugh said, shaking his head "If you guys try to dig any deeper into this situation, you won't be able to get out. It'll only cause them stress. I know how stress Nate gets... I don't even want to know how stress Rosa gets" I frowned, thinking back when Rosa left my house with that weak expression... "Stay out of it" a teacher walked pass the hallway we were in.
"Hey!" Mr.Cheren yelled "What are you all doing here!? Get to your classes! The bell rang 5 minutes ago!" I didn't even hear it! "Go before I give you detention!"
"Sorry!" We all ran to our classrooms. May and I separated from Calem and Serena, leaving us with Hugh not even trying to quicken his pace. I stopped and faced him. He looked confused.
"What do you suggest I do? Let them suffer?" He sighed at my forwardness "You are their childhood friend. Wouldn't you want them to be happy?" He rubbed his head.
"You don't even know what happened. In order for them to talk again, they need to push pass their insecurities" insecurities? "That's all I have to say. They don't know better and I'm not going to be the one to stand between them. If they want to be afraid of each other, let them" he walked pass me "But I'm warning you... if the truth manages to slip, you'll feel guilty for how you'll make them feel" I looked back at them.
"They'll be happy!"
"You don't know what happened. Stop talking"
"I'm their friend. I'll do what it takes to help them"
"Dawn..." May frowned "Is it that hard for you to help?" She asked Hugh.
"Even mentioning their name will make them feel bad. If you want to be the cause of their stress, then by all means. But let me just tell you now" he walked up to my face "even if they make up, it won't change the fact that they're insecure. That alone won't help them even if the matter is resolved. That's how complicated this is" he walked away "But you didn't hear anything from me" he went into his classroom. I sighed and walked with May to our class.
"Are you still determined?" May asked me "I think he's right. Even if they make up over whatever, if there's something else that's bothering them, what good is it to make up without them fixing their own personal problems?"
"Of course I am... I've seen how Nate reacts when he sees her... I saw how she reacted when I mentioned him. There's so much in the story then what we can see. I want to help... I would want someone to do the same for me" we entered the classroom and didn't even spot a teacher.
A substitute with blonde hair and in red glasses was writing on the board before she saw us walk in "Oh!" She turned to us "Are you part of this class too?"
"Yes, sorry we're late" I bowed my head. May rubbed the back of her head.
"We had a situation we had to take care of" she admitted.
"Is everything okay?" She asked, concerned. We promised our safety "That's good!" She picked up a tray from her desk and showed us a few cookies that were surrounded in crumbs "I'm Ms.Bianca! I made this for everyone today. Please take one and have a seat" I took one while May seemed like she wanted to take the whole tray, but just got one and followed me to our seats that were close together. If there's cookies being given... Is Rosa around?
I looked around, wondering where she was. She's usually in my A day homeroom class. Where is she?
"Is everyone here now? I like to get started on the speech I prepared!" Ms.Bianca waved her arms around. I stopped looking at saw Nate leaning on his desk, staring outside. I frowned and stood up "yes?"
"Excuse me, There's a student missing" I said. she picked up a list from the desk.
"What are your names? The two that just came in?" We told her our names "yes, I see you here" She scanned the paper and frowned "Oh? That's strange?" She bit her nails "That can't be a good sign" She thought for a moment before taking out her phone to call someone "don't tell anyone about this" she winked to the class. Everyone chuckled. I looked over at Nate not even paying attention. Is he still thinking about last night..?
"Hello? Whitty?" Ms.Binca spoke "What? But I like that nickname!" She giggled and looked at her sheet "Yeah, I know. Listen, it's my first day as a substitute and- I know this is inappropriate!" Everyone was still giggling at how silly she was. I hope she's not given a hard time "I just wanted to know if you seen Rosa" I spotted Nate finally looking over when he heard her name "Oh..." she frowned "Okay... Just be careful" she hung up and continued writing on the board again.
"What happened?" May asked "To Rosa?" I looked at Ms.Bianca looking a bit confused, like she wasn't expecting that question.
"Oh! It's nothing serious" she waved her hand "She'll come to school later on, so I wouldn't worry"
"What do you mean?" I asked "what happened that you had to call someone?" She sighed and held her hips.
"Not the kind of day I thought I'll have, but oh well" she shrugged "I'm friends with little Rosy's sister, so I was curious. She's in the emergency room" I cupped my mouth while Nate stood from his seat, stiff as a board "Like I said, it's not serious" he sat back down and laid his head down.
I didn't think her injuries were that serious... but then again, she was limping.... why? Why must she be so difficult? If I knew it was serious, I would had taken her there myself.
