Chapter 1: Quiet*

Rosa's Pov

The hallways were always quiet during classroom hours. Everyone had a class to attend while I walked the halls to find students to hand over some sheets of paper to those who haven't turn in their overdue library books.

I'd walk into a room without looking at everyone, feeling a few eyes on me as those few became quiet, handed the sheets to the teacher, and walked out with a simple smile on my face.

The number of eyes that stop what they were doing to watch me never changes every time I enter a room filled with students around my age. I've been asked to work around the school's main office as an office aid due to not having a last period like everyone else does, so doing things like delivering papers and such was normal, just like eyes on me was normal on a daily basis.

I've became used to being stared at by others ever since I first transferred to this school at the beginning of the school year, and surprisingly, even if I'm known to be the quiet girl who avoids a crowd and a casual conversation, people accepted it only after questioning me for the millionth time: my response would always the same.

Even if I'm very quiet and to myself, I wasn't shy, nor was I anti-social. I've been like this ever since I could remember, and I wouldn't say it's a bad thing. In the beginning, when I first transferred here to Asperna City to the new trainer school that opened up, I introduced myself to my new classmates respectively and loudly. There wasn't a hint of me seeming shy or anything, but from what others said, I seemed like the kind of person who likes being alone, which was the truth.

Walking by everyone in the hallways while on my way to my next class with a simple smile was enough to make people accept my silence, even if it wasn't as big of an issue as people may think it would be. I just prefer to be this way.

My work during the last period of the day allows me to do office work and organization around the school or just around the office. It's honestly a breeze.

There were only about 2 sheets of papers left that I had to take to the last room before heading back to the office to collect my things for the day. This particular class was all about the process of understanding Pokémon and their typings. Even if this was a class most intended for freshman, the teacher who's in charge likes to throw everything at the students all at once to challenge their knowledge and it makes them, in my opinion, the most grumpy, misbehaved, and battle driven students I've ever seen... yet they won't think twice about making the teacher angry.

This particular class had the most outgoing students in the school, and having to enter such a classroom got me shaking in my knees. I wasn't a very nervous person to begin with. What got me a bit nervous was a certian student I didn't want looking at me. I thought to myself; it would be okay, since it's the last classroom I'll have to enter. A deep breath was enough to calm me down and walk inside.

Unlike the other classroom I entered before, this classroom was loud and cheerful. Students were throwing things across the room and having a good time while others were playing with their Pokémon or simply just sleeping on their desk all while the teacher was grading papers on the other side of the classroom.

All goes quiet when I walk in. Not just a few students go quiet like other classrooms, everyone goes quiet. The tossing around and party-like atmosphere had vanished as soon as I entered.

"Sorry I interrupted the party" I joked a little, making a few students laugh with me. Knowing it was my last room for the day and all I have to do is hand papers, I got myself to go on and head towards the teacher's desk... which was in the back of the room that made me have to walk pass everyone's desk to get to!

Walking by everyone staring at me and following my every move would make anyone feel awkward and nervous to do so, but it didn't matter to me in the slightest. The pair of eyes I didn't want seeing me the most were locked on me, making me lose my nerves and walk past everyone while sweating.

I tried my best to not look nervous, and smiled, making my way towards the teacher grading papers, just as I thought he was going. I stood in front of him with my pieces of papers and cleared my throat before speaking politely.

"Mr.Cheren" I smiled at him looking at me confused. Seeming relieved to put his papers aside, he sighed, leaned back on his chair to relax, and look at me.

"Good afternoon, Rosa. What more paperwork do I have to handle this time?" He joked, trying to sound cheerful through his stressful twitching eyes. Knowing a class like this was stressful enough, I just set the papers on the desk.

"They are overdue library books for two particular students" I explained, trying to pretend I didn't know the names on the papers.

"A class like this has overdue books? I find that hard to believe" he sighed and took the papers to read "This is a shocker" he snorted and waved the papers around "Nate and Hugh, raise your hand!" I looked back to see two boys raise their hands from their desk leaning against the walls. Another sweat was creeping on my back "could you give those papers to them?" I flinched a little, but didn't make it noticeable "Knowing my students, they won't take anything unless it's given to them. Do it for me, please?" Mr.Cheren handed me back the papers.

"Of course" I smiled and made my way towards them "How's your sister, by the way?" he asked.

"She's great! As always. I rarely get the chance to talk to her sometimes since she's always so busy" he nodded.

"Can't expect anything less from the kind of job she has. I'm glad she's doing well" he smiled and went back to work. I chuckled and made my way towards the two boys waiting for me to approach them.

One of them was just laying their head on their desk, practically asleep with their hand slightly raised. I knew him to be Hugh, the most outbursting boy in this class who has anger issues and often gets suspended for causing fights.

The other boy who sat behind Hugh was sitting straight with their elbow leaning on the desk, watching me. His eyes followed every movement I made, and even if I'm used to being stared at... He's the one that made me the most nervous of them all.

Nate, he's the most popular boy in school, known for his outgoing personality and flirty tensions. From what I heard, he's dated every girl in his grade and often skips class to hang out with someone older than him outside of school. He's quite the charmer, and I always found myself sweating when he stares at me...

"Nate and Hugh?" I asked, finally facing them. Hugh didn't respond, while Nate raised his hand again.

"I'm here" he smiled "Hi" I smiled back and bowed respectfully.

"Good afternoon" I handed him both papers "I believe this is for you and your friend? Correct?" he took the paper to look through.

"These are overdue library books, right?" He chuckled "Funny, I don't remember checking out a book" he scanned the page again "History of Unova... nope" he handed me back his paper "Doesn't sound like me" I took the paper and placed it back on his desk.

"The book is filed under your name. Think long and hard about it, Nate" his eyes stared into mine, trying to find the words to say something "This book is past due and if you don't return it under the day that's on this paper, you can either pay the fine, or not graduate" His face turned a bit blue in fright. Trying to keep the situation as calm as possible, I cleared my throat and looked at Hugh glancing at us from the side of his shoulder "That goes the same for Hugh, as well"

"B-But..." Nate stood up "I didn't check out a library book"

"of all people, why would we get a book from the library?" Hugh questioned, sounding tired. I sighed.

"This is a serious matter. If you mean what you said, you better find a way to find that book and return it. This rest entirely on your future plans to graduate. Figure out a way or things won't go well with you two" I bowed my head "if you have any further questions, please speak with the librarian" Nate looked worried, but quickly shrugged it off and chuckled.

"Don't worry, I'll deal with it" I nodded with a smile.

"That's good to hear! Good luck" he was smiling to himself, but when looking at me when I said that, he couldn't get himself to do it again with a saddened look in his eyes. I bowed my head again and left the classroom, closing the door behind me.

As soon as I closed the door behind me, I went into a slight panic mode and adjusted myself to calm down before heading to the office. I took multiple deep breaths before finally finding my peace and made my way to the office to collect my things.

"That was so much to take in... Why him, of all people, had to have an overdue library book?" I looked at the papers I took from them "they claim they didn't check any books out, but Nate..." I remembered the book he was missing "You're not a very good liar. You've never been..."

"Rosa?" One of the office associates called. I flinched and put my attention on the lady "Did you deliver the paperwork as we asked?" I nodded quickly.

"Yes ma'am!" she smiled.

"alright, why don't you pack up for the day and go home? Want to get lunch later?" I giggled.

"It's not very appropriate to have lunch with a student, remember?" the lady facepalmed.

"You're right. I keep forgetting you're a student. You just act so much more mature for your age" I picked up my backpack from behind a desk "Get home safe" I waved goodbye to everyone in the office.

"See you guys later! Have a good weekend!" everyone waved their goodbyes as I was off to leave the school building before the bell rang.

Because I didn't have a class, if I finish my task early or on time, I get to leave before anyone else. It saves me from having to run into people in the hallways and feel uncomfortable about possibly starting a conversation with someone who suddenly wants to start one... I'll pass.

I had transferred here, or at least, came back to Aspertia City, last year, all the way from Anville city, a small town that is mainly surrounded by train tracks.

From the moment I became a student with the full uniform and everything, I've always had eyes on me. I have been told that I have an attractive appearance and many people wanted to be my friend, but from the way I grew up, being around a crowd or talking to people wasn't really up in the heights of my interest.

Anville was a small town with very little people who were around my age. I was homeschooled and spend my time with my nose in my books, but I can't really say it was the reason why I'm like this today. I used to live in Aspertia city and because of work related issues, I followed my mom to the places her company transferred to. After so many years of living in many places, we finally got to settle down back in the city it all started in.

I had enough practice in speaking to others thanks to my mom's business parties. I'd talk to others and introduced myself to them. It kept me away from the anti-social life, but it never truly kept me away from wanting to always be by myself. That reason is entirely another subject I don't want to get into.

Traveling home only took about a 10 minute walk. I take my time through the busy streets and cross the road like any normal person. Even outside of school I have people watching me, but it wasn't as often as the students who can stare for hours without a break... and that's happened before.

In a daze while waiting for the sidewalk light to turn green, I stared at the sky and thought about what I should do when I get home "I wonder if mom's home yet" someone tapped on me on accident, signaling me that I should walk forward when the light turned green to cross. I started walking and continued to think.

"Should I make some stew?" I thought to myself "It's getting a bit hot since summer is coming up soon and graduation isn't for another few months" I held my chin to think of what to make "Can't go around with rice sushi" I was never a fan of eating Pokémon, so going vegetarian was an easier road than thinking about eating a cute little Pokémon.

I turned the corner to make my way towards the supermarket to buy some rice and seaweed wraps for dinner tonight. There was some magikarp on display in the fish market. I nearly vomit and walked away after getting what I needed.

I would hate to say it, but there are people out there who dare to eat Pokémon. Not all Pokémon are able to be made into food, since there are creatures out there that are much more nutritious than Pokémon, but it's gross to see Magikarp and Farfetch'd in display like that.

Everything was ready and set to go to take home. I completed my planned dinner's list and walked towards the candy isle to collect a large bag of chocolate. Can't go wrong with a bunch of chocolate! It's my favorite thing ever!

I also dared to collect some chocolate ice cream, and eggs for breakfast tomorrow. On my way to look for noodles, I felt two pairs of eyes on me. I looked around to see nothing there... Was someone watching me?

"People are weird..." I collected my things and proceeded to the self-checkout to avoid making any interactions with someone.

With eyes still on me, I left the supermarket and went on home. Mom wasn't anywhere in sight and probably won't get off until this evening, so I took the liberty to make everything before she gets home.

If she's not home before I come back from school, that'll only be a sign of her having to stay later in the Pokémon center. I gladly ate my sushi rolls and watched tv for a few hours before heading upstairs with my chocolate.

I sat on my bed and took out my laptop to videochat my sister. As usual, she didn't answer. She's always busy on the job just like mom... I can't really blame them. I get pretty busy at my own job as well. Still... I wish I could see everyone more.

"Pretty soon, once I graduate, I'll be just like them" I grabbed my pillow to hug "I'll be working all the time and probably won't have time for myself. That's okay... It's not like I have any friends" I dug in my pocket and thought about the time I interacted with Nate earlier. "It's been a long time since I've talked to you. I was so nervous. You never changed... Yet you have" I looked at the small picture I had on my desk "At least you have friends... At least you're happy" I smiled and hugged my pillow closer.

"That's all that matters. I shouldn't be thinking about you at all, but when I transferred back here, I had no choice but to see you again" I opened my pint of ice cream and started eating "It'll never be the same as it use to be. That's alright. Who needs friends when you have ice cream" I happily ate a scoop "Until the day comes when we graduate, I won't forget you..." I frowned "but you've already forrgotten me" I smiled again "Again, that's okay. I understand. Why wouldn't I?" I lifted my spoon again and noticed my hand shaking.

I put the spoon down and closed the lid "I understand... I really do" I curled up my legs to hug them "so why can't I stop thinking about you?" I closed my eyes "Soon... Soon... This will all be over. You won't have to see me again in school after we graduate. you'll live out your dream, and I'll live out mine. I say this... yet I feel sad" I frowned.

I was lucky to have kept my cool back when I first had to walk up to those boys face to face, but imagine the responses I'd get if I accidentally made it noticeable that I was nervous in front of that class. I'll never hear the end of it!

"I'm sorry I came back into your life. I'm sure you didn't want to see me again after that day" I sighed "but we have to keep going until it's time for us to leave. That's the only way" I stood up to pick up the picture from my desk "Why do I still have this anyways?"

I put the frame faced down and looked out the window at the house across the street and spotted a figure walking around in the window. I blushed when he took off his shirt and quickly closed the curtains. "Why..? Why are you making things harder on me... Nate?" I sat on the floor "I'm sorry for being in your life. I'm trying, okay?" I leaned against the wall "don't hate me... I'm trying"
