Forgetting Him (Louis Tomlinson)
“Jake, we need to talk,” Amy pulled him aside as he tried to slip by her and out of the café. She gripped tightly onto his arm and tugged until they reached a small park, sitting down on a nearby bench. “Why have you been avoiding me?”
He frowned, clearly having hoped to avoid this conversation. “It’s not that I’ve been avoiding you, Amy, it’s just that- you know what, yes, I have.”
“I know that you’re lying to me,” Amy scolded him, “but I’ll let that go if you can tell me why you’ve been avoiding me.
Jake was silent. She waited a good five minutes before standing up and beginning to walk away, turning back to see him still seated on the bench, not even having looked up to see where she was going.
“If you can’t even tell me why now, when we’re alone and nobody is here to judge you, how can I trust that you’re being faithful and that there’s another reason for your absence? Actually, how can I trust anything you do? You were my boyfriend, Jake. You’re supposed to tell me things, especially things that are bothering you or making you upset. My job is to be there for you and to help you, but how can I do that when you never tell me anything?”
At that, Jake finally looked up and faced her shimmering blue eyes. “Were? You were my girlfriend?”
Amy scoffed. Of all the things she had said, that was what he heard. “Yes, were. You’re currently ignoring me, though it’s not the first time you’ve done something like this. When were you going to tell me that your parents don’t even know we’re together? That they think I’m just a friend? I would never have known if I hadn’t come over for a surprise visit one day, and they greeted me as a friend.”
“I was going to tell them, you just hadn’t given me enough time!” He angrily replied.
“Oh, really? Did I also not give you enough time to tell your friends that we were together? Did you forget that couples go on dates on Valentine’s Day? Oh, and did I also not give you enough time to remember that as my boyfriend, you should have gone to that party with me, and not your ‘best friend’ who happens to also be an attractive female? I’ve had enough of your games, Jake. You can go find another girl to toy around with, because we’re over.”
Jake suddenly began to cry, though his tears seemed a bit forced. “No, Amy! Don’t leave me! You’re better than all the other girls, I swear! You’re the only one I want! I’ll do anything you want, just don’t go!”
“What other girls?” Amy raised an eyebrow suspiciously. When Jake quieted down and his eyes widened, she snorted. “Oh, so you were cheating on me, too? Is that why nobody knew we were together? Goodbye, Jake. I hope I never have to see you again.”
With that, Amy turned on her heel and stalked off, fuming. How could he do this to her? Jake had seemed like such a nice guy at first, but everybody has a dark side. She just hadn’t seen his yet.
Hopping in her car, which she had left back at the café, she stepped on the gas and began to just drive. She didn’t really know where she was heading to, just that she needed to let off some steam and do something to forget about Jake before she turned around and ran him over.
After a few minutes, once Amy was no longer seeing red, she turned on the radio and a random song played softly in the background. It soothed her, and soon she realized that she actually felt free, in a way. Jake was controlling, manipulative, and a jerk a lot of the time. He wasn’t faithful and clearly was incapable of being honest. Why should she waste her tears and heartbreak on him? He didn’t deserve it, just like he didn’t deserve her.
The sun was setting by the time she reached the beach. Amy hadn’t been aware that was the direction she was driving in, but now that she was on the sand, feeling the cool breeze flowing through her long, dark hair, she felt relaxed.
Amy was a music kind of girl. Music was the one thing that would always be there for her, no matter what else was going on around her. She grabbed her guitar from the trunk and found a place just behind a boulder, sheltered from the wind. She began to strum softly, letting her fingers take her away into her own private world.
She could already feel the hurt from earlier in the afternoon fading, to be replaced by longing. She longed for someone to be there with her, experiencing the peace of the guitar and the sea. Closing her eyes, she let herself become totally lost in the music as she hummed along.
In fact, she was so lost that she didn’t notice the boy a little older than her walking along the beach on the opposite side of the boulder. The boy, too, was engrossed in music, though his was coming from the ear buds he carried, connected to his phone. He was looking down, and she was carried away by the sound, and neither of them knew what was happening until the boy tripped over the edge of the boulder, falling over and rolling directly on top of Amy, whose eyes had shot open.
“Who are you?” She asked cautiously, yanking her guitar from beneath the stranger and stepping back, holding it in front of her like a shield.
“Louis. My name is Louis. What’s yours, pretty girl?”
She decided it couldn’t hurt to flirt a little. What better way to get over Jake?
“I’m Amy. Nice to meet you, Louis-who-fell-on-top-of-me. May I ask how you happened to do that, by the way?”
He chuckled lightly. “I was listening to music and really should’ve been paying more attention to my feet than my phone, but I ran into that boulder and now here we are.”
Amy returned his smile. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m all good. You and the sand broke my fall, so it wasn’t too bad. What’s that you’ve got there? A guitar? Oh no, did I break it?”
“What? Oh no, it’s fine. I was playing it and got lost in my thoughts, which is why I didn’t hear you coming,” Amy hadn’t even thought that her guitar may have been broken, but she was very glad it was okay.
“You play? That’s awesome! I tried to learn. Actually, one of my best mates, Niall, tried to teach me, but it didn’t go too well. I do play the piano, though, and I sing,” Louis explained.
Amy grinned excitedly. “Why don’t I play something, and you can sing with me? I kind of sing, but I don’t think I’m any good.”
Louis agreed, and she began to play the opening chords of Moments, by One Direction. She heard him chuckle and assumed it was because of her song choice, since most guys she knew weren’t exactly fans of the band.
His voice was breathtaking, and he sang with such passion. Amy almost forgot to play a few times as she watched him sing through the song, her joining in to harmonize in the chorus. Though she thought he might not have known it due to his initial reaction, Louis knew every word and every note.
“Wow, that was amazing! Perfect, really!” Amy gushed as she finished strumming. “It almost sounds like you’re one of them!”
It went quiet. She turned to face him, taking in his features for the first time. He had brown hair tousled by the wind and blue eyes that pierced through her. He wasn’t too tall, but not exactly short either. It took a moment, and then she gasped.
“Don’t tell me I managed to come across Louis Tomlinson, not know who he is, and then ask him to sing one of his own songs for me.”
Louis laughed, “Sorry to disappoint, love, but it’s me.”
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t recognize you in the dark! I’ll just get going now, thanks for singing with me,” Amy said, bowing her head and turning to leave, but Louis caught her wrist and turned her back around.
“No, stay. It’s refreshing to meet someone who’s as calm around me as you are. Most people start screaming, crying, gasping for air, or shoving things in my face, or any combination of the above.” He smiled, pulling her closer.
“In that case, I guess I can stay,” Amy said happily. “What were you doing out this late, on this beach, of all places? Don’t you have better places you could be?”
Louis shook his head. “Nah, I really don’t. We had an interview around here earlier, and the boys went clubbing, but I wanted to just relax for once. The beach seemed to be calling my name. I think it was trying to lead me to you,” he smirked.
“Are you flirting with me, mister?” Amy said, attempting to sound stern but failing.
“That depends, is it working?” He winked.
She laughed. “Maybe, maybe not. You’ll never know… unless you catch me!” She quickly placed her guitar by her shoes and raced off down the beach in the direction Louis came from.
“Hey, that’s not fair! You got a head start!” Louis said, kicking off his shoes and following her.
The two chased each other around for a while, until Amy’s legs grew tired and she suddenly stopped and dropped to the sand. Louis, who was having difficulties seeing in the dark, didn’t know she had stopped and tripped over her, once again landing right on top of her.
“I caught you,” he whispered, staring into her eyes.
“Yes, it seems you did,” she whispered back, her words hanging in the still night air.
“Can I ask you something?” Louis asked, still lying on top of her. Amy nodded. “What would you do if I were to kiss you right now?”
Amy was shocked. “Kiss me? You, Louis Tomlinson, want to kiss me? Well, I have to say I’d kiss you back. You’re quite attractive, you know. You really get all the ladies,” she winked, giggling.
Louis leaned in and slowly placed his lips on hers. Their mouths move in sync, as if their souls are connected. As he begins to feel out of breath, Louis pulls back and rolls off of Amy, grabbing her hand and staring up at the emerging stars.
“I think it was fate that I chose to sit behind that boulder, and that you wanted to relax and weren’t paying attention,” Amy said, breaking the silence.
“I’d like to believe so,” Louis replied with a wide smile. “You’ve made me so happy tonight, Amy. I would love to see you again; actually, I would love to look into you beautiful eyes a multitude of times. Would you do me the honor of…” he paused, making Amy’s heart beat incredibly fast, “being my girlfriend?”
“Of course I would,” she breathed out, letting out the built up anxiety as the two cuddled into each other, lying in the middle of an empty beach at midnight, gazing at a starry sky.
The day may have started pretty horribly, but Amy thought fate decided to make up for it by sending Louis her way. And you know, she couldn’t exactly complain about that.
