Heroes, No Matter What They Say
The door closed before Mabel and Dipper could follow. When they tried opening it, it was heavier than a castle gate.
A trapdoor had opened up underneath Elizabetta and Zace, sending the two tumbling down. Right into the cave the twins were in.
William and Stan had managed to pluck out all but one of the crystals from the holes. The burrow seemed like it was having an earthquake.
Ben had climbed to the top of the strange machine, where there was a crawl space, and was trying to get a panel off. Ford was observing the buttons and switches, trying to see what they all meant.
Then, Ben ripped out a black wire and William pulled out the last gem.
The machines suddenly rumbled, and the floor under Ford disappeared. Ben perked up in surprise, hitting his head on the top of the area. "Stanford!" He yelled. Ford landed in the cave with the others, and William and Stan tumbled in after him. Once they stumbled to their feet, the group shouted up to Ben to stay put. Ford told him to figure out what was going on with the machine.
Zace looked around, feeling uneasy everywhere. He stepped toward the door and examined the handle. "It looks like a really big portcullis." He noticed Stan's confused stare, as if he was speaking backwards. "A door from the Middle Ages. What? You think I didn't learn a few things about you humans?"
He sighed, turning back to the door. He ran his finger along the hinges. "Completely sealed. Can't open this... unless..." He stepped back slightly.
"It's wood... flammable..."
William immediately jumped back, his eye wide with fear. Elizabetta stiffened. "I-I'm sure we can find another way inside!" She pleaded.
Zace looked at his mother, holding his arms out. "What other way can you find? The ground that opened to bring us down here has resealed, so we can't get the lever." There was a look of nervousness in his expression. He wasn't exactly thrilled to do this.
Elizabetta opened her mouth to protest, but her son stepped toward her. "Please, I need to do this. I need you to trust that I can control it. I need you to trust me." He pleaded. Mabel shuddered at his last sentence, remembering what Ida had said before she was pulled into the darkness. The demoness hesitated for a moment more, then nodded.
"I trust you..."
Zace Rey Cipher stood in front of the door, his eye flashing with determination. He held out his hands and relaxed his shoulders. "Stand back." He ordered. The group nervously stepped away, clearing his path completely.
Suddenly, fire shot from his hands. The flames were an emerald green, making the cave look like a forest for a moment. In his panic, Zace lost control. His hands were burned and wounded. The flames strayed away from the target, spreading. 'No.' He thought, fixating his vision on the door. The flames rushed away from the walls and scorched the door. The wood was quickly eaten away.
It was only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity for the Ciphers. William had buried his face in his mother's cloak, and Elizabetta clenched her fists until her nails cut her palms.
Soon, the flames died out and the door was gone. Zace stumbled back, waving his hands to get the excess flames off his hands. Small burns were scattered on his hands. He winced, rubbing his fingers, which only made the burns hurt more.
"That wasn't completely and totally terrifying." Zace muttered sarcastically, looking into the abyss. William hesitantly walked over to Zace and looked down. "Creepy..." He whispered.
The younger shrugged. "Welp, I'm going in." He said. Zace tried to grab him, but William just tumbled into the abyss. Zace lost his balance and fell in right after. After a second of shock, Elizabetta followed, trying her best to not scream in panic.
After a moment of just staring at the scene, the Pines snapped out of their shock and ran into the darkness.
Into the darkness, they went, feeling the cold of the wind passing them. Mabel nearly forgot to breathe, and tried to reach for her brother's hand. Dipper was almost calm. The whole thing felt so surreal- like it wasn't even happening. For just a moment, he was unafraid. Then, they reached the bottom. It didn't hurt too badly, but it still surprised Dipper.
"Looked like it hurt. I'd say pain is funny, but this probably isn't a good time. Ay, Pine Tree?" A voice half-laughed.
Dipper jumped up in surprise. Standing a few feet from where the group had fallen, was a familiar demon. Chains cuffed around his wrists and ankles. His expression looked calm, but somber. Like he'd accepted his fate. His face seemed drained, and there was an air to him that told the group that Flintgold's magic was slowly eating at him.
Zace rushed toward his father, but he stepped back. "No, stay back. He knows you're here. He wouldn't just send people that can help me here. Something could... happen-" Elizabetta walked to him. "Bill, please, I want to help get you out." She said, her eye a mixture of fear and desperation.
Magic flickered in her hands and she reached for her husband's binds, but as soon as she touched them, a spark lit through her fingers. She jumped in surprise, her heart sinking with worry.
Bill nearly laughed at how pitiful he was right now. He felt so angry at himself. 'I should've stopped him. I should've been able to protect them all.' He thought.
Mabel sighed nervously, wringing her hands together. "So, how do we get out of here? A-and where's Ida?" She looked around. Bill clenched his fists. "Flintgold has her."
William looked at him quizzically. "Why? We're all here, so why's she there?" He asked.
"Ida is a spirit." Bill said. "And Flintgold is technically one as well." He looked at the others. "She's more of a threat to him than any of us are. He wants to get rid of her quickly."
Zace winced in fear. He had known Ida only a short while, but he didn't want anything to happen to her.
Dipper thought for a moment, trying to come up with a plan. "We need to find a way to get to Ida." He said.
Bill let out a sad laugh, lifting his hands slightly. "I don't even know where we are, or how to get you all out. And this is supposed to be MY mindscape."
Elizabetta set her jaw. "We WILL get out of here. We WILL stop Flintgold." She said, her voice strong with determination. She wasn't going to lose anyone today. Bill wanted to hold her so badly.
"Ida senses auras. That's a pretty strong power. Maybe you could try and sense her power with your magic?" Zace suggested. William looked at him, seeming confused. The older looked back. "What? I'm ditzy, but I'm not too bad at making plans." He said, slightly offended.
The demoness smiled and nodded. "That's a good idea." She complimented. She knelt down, placing her hand on the floor of the abyss. White lines suddenly glowed on the ground and swirled about, creating a path far off. "That's the way to her." She said. The group suddenly heard humming from below them.
William tilted his head. "Ben?" He called. The humming stopped. "Who the-" A voice was heard. Bill smiled a bit.
"Benjamin...!"
From below, Ben had been rifling through the wires, trying to figure out all the functions. To distract himself from his fear, he was humming to himself. It was a song that he heard in another Dream Dimension. His movements slowed for a moment as his senses remembered his home dimension. That was when he heard voices above him. One called his name. Then another.
Ben looked up, nearly hitting his head on the ceiling of the crawlspace. "Guys? Are you up there?" He asked.
"Ben!" William cheered.
Ben smiled a little. "Hey there, just working on trying to figure out how to work with all this." He explained.
Elizabetta looked at the glowing path. "You and I will stay here." She whispered, looking at Ford. "We'll try to figure out how to break the bonds." Ford nodded. She looked back to the ground. "The rest of you follow the path, alright?"
Zace hesitated for a moment, not wanting to leave his parents alone like this. Bill looked at him, smiling gently. 'Go,' he mouthed. Zace sighed, stepping back. "Alright, let's go..."
And with that, Zace, William, the Pines twins, and Stan ran off along the path. For a while, it seemed like it was pointless, with only darkness surrounding them.
That was until they heard fighting. Then, saw Ida Micheals evading dark tendrils, and fighting the darkness around her.
