Chapter 44: August's POV
Tomorrow surely sucked, that's for sure. Around four in the morning, Malikai woke me up, shaking me, telling me that his water had broken, and he was panicking, telling me he still had two more months until Persephone was due. I called Kathy in a panic, she explained that I needed to get Malikai to the packhouse maternity ward and meet us there.
After a few hours of me waiting, Kathy came out and explained that today Malikai. She told me that she was waiting for a specialist to come from another pack due to the baby being early. Kathy said she had never delivered a baby this soon before the due date, she wanted to make sure they were taking all of the right precautions to ensure the baby had a fighting chance. The pack healer that had delivered me three months early had long since passed on. So when Kathy explained she would need help, I only agreed that it would be best.
She let me into the room with him, he was hooked up to the sonogram machine, the baby's heartbeat thumped away like a freight train. "She gave me medicine to stop the contractions, it didn't work." Malikai choked, his eyes were puffy. I could tell he had been crying for a while, his eyes were puffy full of sorrow.
"Well babe, you need to calm down, we're waiting for a specialist to come here," I explained, sitting next to him, my hips and rear protested me sitting down. I grabbed his free hand and started running my thumb over the top.
"How can I calm down when I fail at the one thing a good parent is supposed to do? Protect their children." He agonized. "I couldn't even carry her to full term August. I was supposed to carry her for six more weeks." He strained.
"I think she's just excited to meet her daddy." I gave him a small smile. "Look, I was born early as well, don't worry, everything will be alright." I tried being optimistic.
"I'm also fucking up the day, you're supposed to find out if Alpha Alexandre is your mate or not..." He trailed off. "I'm so sorry about judging you last night." He winced as a visible contraction hit him.
"Don't worry about that right now, it's still pretty early in the day. Let's worry about you and Persephone. Okay?" I began rubbing his arm to comfort him.
I got to my feet, combing his locks out of his face with my fingers. The marks that once littered his chest and neck were now faded scars. He had grown so much in the months we had been living together, he became more confident in himself, he even grew to adore his baby girl. He just had a different aura around him that radiated with love and happiness for the child growing inside of him.
For the next hour, I kept reassuring him that everything would be alright and that I was born prematurely as well, and I'm alive and healthy. Repeating those words to Malikai began to calm him down a little, especially when I explained I was born earlier than Persephone would be.
He eventually calmed enough to take a nap, waking up to shift into a comfortable position periodically. The only sound in the room was the sound of the machine emitting the baby's heartbeat. I continued running my fingers through his hair to comfort him.
A soft knock on the door sounded before someone opened the door. In walked a male in his mid 20's holding onto a clipboard, his hair neatly cut, his brown eyes hid behind a pair of glasses. He didn't look up, focusing on the information that was on the clipboard.
"Is there any way you could wake him?" He looked at me. I nod, shaking Malikai awake.
He whined, keeping his eyes closed. He muttered something I couldn't quite hear, but a lone tear slid out of his eye. "Kai you need to wake up; the doctor is here."
"Anyone but him, please?" He pleaded, keeping his eyes closed. His breathing became erratic, I could hear the sound of the baby's heart slow down.
"Open your eyes Malikai, you have no choice about who the doctor is," I argued. "Why are you acting like this?"
"Please August, just please." He cried out.
"If it's in regards to us being mates, I'm not going to do what you think I'm going to do. Right now, I'm more concerned with the health of the child and you. Can we please set that aside for right now and focus on your well being?" My jaw dropped in shock. Malikai opened his eyes and looked at the Doctor. "I'm Doctor Miles Quinton; it's nice to meet you, Malikai, you as well August."
"Likewise," I nodded my head.
"We're going to have to prep you for surgery-" Malikai cut him off.
"I can't give birth naturally?" He choked out, his eyes filling up with tears. The news obviously not what he wanted to hear.
"I'm afraid it would not be the best option at the moment, the baby's heart rate has slowly been dropping, the baby is in distress, we need to get her out as soon as possible. It's the safest option for both of you." Malikai bawled at the words that had come out of Doctor Miles's mouth. "Don't worry, everything will be alright, I've done this operation several times!" He explained, hooking the clipboard to the end of the bed. "Anyways, who would you like to be there with you during the delivery?"
"August, please!" He pleaded with his eyes.
"Very well. We're going to get prepped, and then we'll be ready to rock and roll." He winked at my friend.
---
After that, everything seemed to move fast; in a flash, a tiny Perespone was with us, trying her lungs out for the first time. Her small cries filled the room, bringing tears to both Malikai and I's eyes. When Doctor Miles asked me if I wanted to cut the cord, separating her from Malikai, I only shook my head.
I could see the awe in the Doctor's eyes as he held the baby in his hands. She was so small in the dominant wolf's hands. I could see his eyes light up when I had declined to cut the cord, meaning that he would be the one to complete the task. Once they were done, they put her on Malkiai's chest while they put him back together, stitching the cut shut. Malikai was crying, pressing his lips to the baby's head.
---
"Is he asleep?" Doctor Miles poked his head in the door of Malikai's room.
"Yeah, he's been out like a light since they took Persy back to the nursery," I flipped through a magazine that I had found on the table.
"Is it alright if I talk to you alone?" He asked; I glanced up, shrugging in response.
I flipped the booklet shut, responding to him. "I mean, I don't mind, but I'm not leaving this room." I crossed my arms over my chest.
"That's fine, I just wanted to know the best way to talk to Malikai. I had to look over his file, and I realized that he's had a tough time before joining this pack. I mean, my pack by no means is like yours, I had to sneak out to come here. They wouldn't have let me come knowing I was going to help an Omega." He paused. "I'm not going to reject him. I've seen what it does to Omega's..."
"Good, because I would have a lot of words for you if you did. He's been through so much, he deserves happiness. The best way to talk to him... Just be calm with him, understanding, gentle. He wanted you to get out of the room because he was sure that his mate would reject him due to having another man's pup." I rubbed my sweaty palms on my pant legs. "Probably don't give him time to talk at first though, he'll most likely throw out accusations-"
August, where the fuck are you at? Ella's voice echoed in my head.
"I'll leave you alone for a minute, my friend just linked me." I stood up from the chair, my hips hurt from the sudden change. I stepped out of the room, quietly shutting the door behind me.
I'm at the pack's maternity ward, Kai had the baby. I replied.
Dude, it's past eight pm, did you forget about Alexandre's birthday party. I don't think I've ever seen him so defeated. It's been hours. Ella sounded irritated. Most of the people who've come to celebrate have left, it's mostly just his friends left here.
I can't leave him here by himself. My parents are still on their way home. His mate is here... I trailed off. He can't be left alone right now. I even don't know his mate fully. I don't feel comfortable leaving him here by himself.
I'll come over there with Joe. You need to haul ass over here.
I'll wait until you're here to leave. I cut off the link. I entered the room Doctor Miles had Malikai's head cradled in his hands. My friend now awake, staring the dominant wolf in the eyes. I hadn't been gone that long, but it seemed like they had a moment that I shouldn't be interrupting. Too bad. I cleared my throat, making their heads snap in my direction. Malikai's face heated, the Dominant male stood up straight, letting go of Malikai's face.
"It's eight, I was supposed to go to the Alpha's birthday party tonight, I'm just waiting for Ella to arrive." I awkwardly walked back to where I was previously seated.
"Uhm, thank you, Doctor..." Kai cleared his throat.
"Just call me Miles darling, I'll be back in an hour to check on your vitals." He nodded to both of us before making his exit out of the room.
"So," I drew out the 'o'.
"He just accepted the bond." Malikai choked out a sob, looking at me with tear-filled eyes. "He accepted the bond." He repeated as if he didn't even believe the words coming out of his mouth.
"That's great." I grinned, leaning over patting his thigh.
"He accepted me..."
"As he should have." I got to my feet, giving him an awkward hug. "You deserve happiness. Kathy came in while you were asleep, she explained that Persephone's vitals are good, they have her on oxygen due to her lungs not being fully developed. She should only need that for a few days." I explained, kissing his cheek before pulling away.
"Today honestly is one of the best days of my life, I only hope it's the same for you." Malikai smiled, tears clearly building up in his eyes.
"Alright bitches, I'm fucking here." Ella shoved the door open with her foot. Joseph followed behind her quietly. "Get to getting, August." She shooed me out the door with her hands.
