Prologue (Izuna)
The world could be a fantastic place, or a bitter one, depending on your luck.
It was divided, you see, into three parts. Or rather, into three types of people.
You were born your type. The types never mixed, so you became what your parents were, and that's what you would be for the rest of your life. Alpha, beta or omega.
For the sake of simplicity, let's begin with betas. They are what most would call "normal" people. They have important jobs as nurses, office workers, teachers and dental hygienists. In rare cases, they can have more well-paid jobs. They live in apartments or houses in the cities, with balconies or gardens, living ordinary lives as ordinary people. They are neither timid, nor flamboyant, all in all very content with their good but not extravagant lives. If you were to try their lives, you would notice no difference to the one you're used to living. You would go to school, then to highschool, then maybe to university. You got a job, met another beta, started a family. You went on field trips on the weekends and on holidays in the summers. If you were a bit more well-off, you could afford another holiday at Christmas. They eat well, never go hungry, and usually feast on something special on weekends and holidays. Personality-wise, they are helpful, never boisterous but with a strong sense of self. They would never let an omega step on them, and they aren't happy when alphas does. They are very much like you.
The alphas are one giant leap above the betas. They hold the most well-paid jobs of society; they're CEOs of grand companies, doctors, engineers. They have an even stronger sense of self than the betas and are not happy to interfere with the two types of people beneath them. They act superior because they are, in every way. This is not opinion-based; it's facts. When an alpha comes into the room, you know, because they exert so much poise and power that all around bow down. There is some rivalry between alphas, some being more dominant than others, yet they are very reluctant to bow down to anyone. They live in mansions, own yachts, have private chefs, always a beta because they would never interfere with omegas. Honestly, they would prefer an alpha chef to not have a beta work for them, but an alpha would never work beneath another alpha in such a way. They were known for bullying the betas and omegas horrendously, especially the omegas. It happened that they beat an omega senseless, and even if laws were in place to prevent this from happening, they rarely worked. There was just so much hatred radiating from the alphas towards the omegas, and since the ones in charge of the justice system... I never understood it. Never. I never hated the alphas as a group the way they hated us.
The omegas... If an omega walks into the room, you notice, too. As opposed to the alphas, they wouldn't be noted due to their charisma, but rather the lack of it. The alphas were radiating suns making you notice them and look away. The omegas were so closed in on themselves that they were like black holes, forcing your attention that way anyway by sucking you into their submissiveness. They held simple maintenance and cleaning jobs. Very rarely, they attended university, yet getting a job fit for their title would be a struggle. They were timid and quiet, always wanting to help, willingly bowing down to the two superior types. They lived in extreme poverty, in giant cities covered in smog where containers had been stacked in order to fit in as many omegas as possible within the smallest possible surface area. They clad in grey, matching the colours of their filthy surroundings, and had rarely known a full stomach.
I was an omega.
There were, however, some factions of the betas that had started to protest the system, claiming better lives for the omegas. That there were injustices that went beyond the genetics of the alphas, betas and omegas. The alphas quieted the protests down vigorously. The omegas didn't get involved.
The three types are not allowed to interfere, and even if they were allowed, they wouldn't, because it wasn't in their nature to mix. They never mixed together under any context other than a purely professional one; employees or clients.
There had never before been a romance outside of the groups. They always kept to themselves.
But things were changing. Not only the betas' protests.
