Chapter 3
Slamming the grocery bags down on the kitchen counter, he raced against time as he practically flew over the dining hall to reach the once-empty living room. Slightly breathless, he watched as his hyung leisurely walked the length of the room to settle down on the couch reserved only for him.
The lights in the room were a pleasant yellow to match the interior aesthetics of the house. What should've dimmed anyone's face only accentuated his hyung's caramel skin, almost making him look godly. His lithe muscles strained in the black turtleneck he wore under his grey suit.
His mind nodded in satisfaction at what he was seeing. He knew he had made the best choice choosing him over all the other agents.
He gasped. He couldn't get distracted again!
However, it was too late. His hyung's rugged yet handsome face contorted to a frown at whatever he was seeing on his work tablet.
"Namjoon hyung, he-"
"You'll get whatever is due later, Jungkook."
Jungkook winced at the tone. His hyung barely even glanced in his direction before he started to move towards the front door. His face was set, jaw taut and eyes hard as he waited.
He probably had a few minutes at best to find someone else to diffuse the storm that was coming.
Currently, they were the only ones home, but weekly inspections by the older members were never done alone. Namjoon hyung had to have been accompanied by someone. His other two hyungs were out of the station to even be an option.
That left him with-
"What do you mean he couldn't handle the stress?!"
Jungkook watched as the saviour arrived, but in a condition less reassuring than he anticipated.
"If he was going to jump off anyway, he should've made sure he wouldn't become even more of a burden than he was already! Why do we have to take up his medical bills, huh?"
Jungkook's hopeful expression morphed into horror at the words spewing out of his usually cheerful hyung. He could only watch as more obscenities flew at a faster rate expressing more and more of his frustration.
Unconsciously he started fiddling with his fingers. An anxious habit that he still couldn't get rid of. Now that he was aware of what he was doing, he couldn't stop.
He knew none of them were frustrated with him. He knew it. Yet the atmosphere that kept on thickening with tension made him feel nauseous at that point.
"Jeikei, want some?"
Jungkook lifted his head to see his Hoseok hyung offering him jellies from a packet. His shoulders sagged in relief at the small smile on his hyung's face. He had forgotten how terrifying he looked when things didn't go his way.
"Sure, thank you hyung-nim!"
Hoseok hyung's fond eyes made Jungkook feel bashful until he remembered the situation at hand.
In his periphery, Namjoon hyung threw open the door. If only he had a few more minutes to explain to Hoseok hyung, if only!
Jungkook could visibly see the battle going on Jin hyung's face as he struggled to decide whether the explanation he owed or the sick man's health came first. He was about to tug on Hoseok hyung's hand when he moved to stand beside Namjoon hyung.
"Let's calm down, Joon-ah. You of all people know he would never endanger our lives like that."
"But he could be someone sent from-"
Namjoon hyung abruptly shut up and Jungkook could see why upon seeing the unnatural glint in Hoseok hyung's eyes.
"He's defenceless, he's probably malnourished and on the verge of getting hypothermia. And you call yourself a doctor? After what happened to your family, is this what you wanted to be?"
Hoseok hyung had struck a nerve and it was as if Namjoon hyung's vendetta against him was to prove how exactly good of a doctor he was.
"Jungkook-ah, help Jin hyung get that man to the room."
Jungkook rushed forward. He felt like he could cry at the change towards him from his dimpled hyung. His silent rage hadn't made him miss the way he mistreated Jungkook a while ago.
Distantly he could hear Hoseok hyung bid farewell as everyone dispersed. Hoseok hyung to his room and the others to the guest's station.
By the time Namjoon hyung retrieved the necessary medical instruments, Jungkook and his hyung had settled the man onto the bed. The two comforters wrapped snuggly around the man seemed little to do to the shivering that had started yet again.
"Shit, 41°C." Namjoon hyung announced. The infrared thermometer was quickly kept aside.
Jungkook hurried to dip the soft cloth into the cold water tub on the bedside table. When he placed the cloth on the man's forehead, he got a good look at his face. Dark circles from prolonged stress hung under his closed eyes. With his sickly pale skin and sunken cheeks, he looked like he belonged in the emergency ward.
In his sudden panic, he bumped into Jin hyung as he sidestepped.
"He'll be okay, right Namjoon?" Jungkook stumbled as he was pulled into a side hug by his eldest hyung.
"Yes, as long as he wakes up in a few hours." The reply was curt as the doctor worked on fixing an IV.
"Say..." Jungkook began in an attempt to forget his embarrassment, "How'd you press the button for the elevator?"
Jin hyung seemed suddenly invested in patting Jungkook's hair.
"Well, yes, why aren't you answering, hyung?" Namjoon hyung was now pressing a stethoscope to the man's chest.
"Fine!" Jin hyung seemed to drag his response as much as possible before finally admitting defeat. "I used his foot."
Jungkook fully turned to face his hyung, "Wha-"
