CHAPTER 4

"Did you receive any replies yet?" Duke Reuel Esmeray, asked the head butler as he read the reports the Count Elwood submitted. His salt of pepper hair was pushed backwards as his blue eyes scanned the papers.

"Yes, your grace. Both of the young masters replied that they are trying to return as quickly as possible." the elderly man with white hair replied. "Though I did mention young master Kaven not to rush by leaving his work behind, he said he will be fine."

"The kid doesn't change does he," the duke sighed while the butler chuckled lightly.

"I am sure he will manage it, your grace." the butler said with a slight smile.

"And Orion?" the Duke asked about his second hoping his childish son is not getting himself killed.

"Well, young master Orion tried to leave without the academy's permission which is why he got into trouble with the teachers. So his return will be a bit delayed." the butler answered as the duke sighed.

"Can't a day go by where he won't cause trouble?" the duke pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes.

"That's how young master Orion always was," the butler who watched the two grow up knew as well as their own biological father.

"So when will they be returning?" the duke asked.

"It will take young master Kaven a week to arrive. If he can get help from any mage, it might take him 3 days. And as for young master Orion, he is suspended now so he will be arriving next week." the butler answered.

"So they will arrive at the same time, that's nice." the duke muttered, as the butler nodded.

"They are worried about Lady Evanora, though young master Kaven won't show it, he is trying his best to return as soon as possible." the butler said, his eyes stared out at a distance as his mind wandered off worrying about the Esmeray family. It's no secret to anyone that Esmeray and Lady Evanora don't get along. As she was not related by blood, people provoked the situation as well. Then gradually the situation turned awkward, it became difficult to solve.

Yet, both the sides were at fault and were innocent at the same time it made things harder to get solved about the Esmerays as they slowly fell apart. The Duke stared at the head butler for a while and then spoke.

"I hope I took responsibility for my actions earlier," he said as the butler panicked knowing his master realised what he was thinking.

"I wasn't blaming you, your grace! But..." the butler trailed off.

"But?"

"Well, now that lady Evanora doesn't remember her past memories. Then her ladyship is probably not holding a grudge against anything? So is it not the best time for my lord to try to fix everything? The young masters can restart, I am sure Lady Evanora will understand as well." the butler smiled as the distressed duke.

"Well, it's worth a try,"

...

"Huh?"

"The Duke asked for me?" I asked as Emilly nodded her head quickly.

"Did the butler say the reason?" I asked, putting the book about the Alastrian war down. To get such a big territory, the people of Alastria had to go through many wars, battles for countless years. But it's been 80 years since there have been no major wars or battles. Even so, rebels from many kingdoms under the empire caused a lot of trouble, so small or big wars are always in this empire. So it was basically the time when our male lead Lucian De Conlaed Alastair's grandfather was the emperor.

"Well, he said his grace wanted to have tea with you." Emily answered.

"Tea, you say? Do I have to change?" I asked Emily who shook her head, signalling no.

"Just let me fix your hair milady, and then you can greet his grace." Emily said as I nodded getting up from the library study table.

Yes, just like yesterday, right after breakfast I came straight to the library. In situations like this the novel I read would do me no good, because the information like the history of Alastria, the political distribution of nobility and the list goes on. After Emily fixed my hair, she led me to the duke's study. It looks like I need to ask Emily to give me a tour of the dukedom before things get too complicated.

"We are here milady," Emily said as I nodded and dismissed her. The head butler stood by the door of the study as he bowed to me as he saw me approaching.

"Greetings, milady. I hope you are feeling well today." the elder man smiled at me. If I remember well, the head butler is one of the people who took care of Evanora despite how indifferent she was.

"Hello Josep, I am feeling much better now. Thank you for worrying." I smiled back at him.

"His grace is waiting for you, I hope you two can have a good time and catch up." Josep said. Right, to the Esmerays Josep was not just a head butler of the house who took care of the household, he was also a family to them. He pushed the study's door open for me, as I walked inside.

"I, greet his grace the duke of Esmeray estate. May the blessing of the gods be upon you." I bobbed a curtsy at the duke, who was sitting behind his study desk. Reuel Arye Esmeray, tired dark blue eyes, with pepper and salt hair now which was once pitch black. With a few wrinkles, he looked the same when he was in his prime. How do I know? Well, because I read the novel of course. Aside from that, I saw his portrait in the library yesterday.

"You may rise," the duke, my father said. No matter how awkward it is, I have to accept the fact that he is my father now. Well, the duke is a good person so I think everything should be fine.

"Come here," he said as he walked over to the sofa placed in the middle of the room with a coffee table in the middle. The maid poured both of us tea before the duke dismissed her. We took a sip from our cups before the duke spoke again.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. Of course he was asking about my fake amnesia.

"I am feeling better now, the doctor pays a visit everyday. Though there aren't many signs of my memory returning." I said. As I have no access to the earlier Evanora's memory, I sort of am going through an amnesia phrase.

"I see, I am glad you are doing better now." he said with a slight smile.

"The doctor told me, you might get your memories back if you visit familiar places and if you spend time with the people you know a lot." the duke asked, as I put my tea cup down and stared at him.

"So I was wondering if you can take a break from your endingless reading in the library for this old man." he chuckled as I could feel my face turn red out of embarrassment though there was nothing to be embarrassed about.

"But your grace, don't you have work-" the duke cut me off.

"Father," he said.

"Huh?" I just blankly stared at him.

"That's what you usually called me," the duke let out a hearty chuckle. Well, having a nice family was like a feverish dream for me, but having a father like Duke Reuel was not that bad.

"Sure father," I smiled back at my father.
