CHAPTER 26
Six months really isn't enough, as one would think they are. Especially if you are supposed to get used to a totally new world. Ever since the day I woke up in this world, I have been on a discovery journey. The first week in a completely new face and body was traumatising to say the least. I locked myself in the room I woke up in for a week. Fortunately the person, deity, whoever sent me here, was kind enough to lend me all the memories and skills of this person, Lucian de Conlaed Alastair.
I thought I was gifted enough for being a prodigy pianist, but this Lucian guy proved me wrong. What do you mean this guy fought in war since the age of 15 and was in the war for 4 years! Four years! And he came back victorious, and was the hero of the Empire.
But since I had his memories and skills, it was much easier falling back into the shoes of Lucian once I escaped the room I confined myself in for a week. The more I went through his memories, his responsibilities, his emotions. It was like seeing my life, written in a different era. Same plot, same emotions, just different characters.
Probably that's why, even though six months wasn't enough, I didn't let anyone realise that I wasn't the blessing of the empire, Crown Prince Lucian de Conlaed Alastair. Because I didn't need to pretend to be him, I was him, I felt him and I knew him.
I am him.
Which is probably also why I couldn't let Derek leave after he got too mad at me for being 'perfectly fine' when he heard I was dying and had to teleport. I sometimes don't understand if I actually grew up or am still a kid.
"Since I should touch some grass and get some sun, how about you and I go visit Lady Adarlan?" I asked a very fuming Derek. I hoped he would calm down a bit at the name of his loving fiance.
"It would be a waste if you visit me and not, since you have to teleport there too." I shoot a smile at him. "Might just get all the teleportation done in one day."
Derek glared at me.
This has turned into a daily occurrence at this point. Even though he doesn't stay in the palace and prefers to stay away from the capitol at Hico, he manages to glare at me through his letters.
"It would be unfair of me to leave for Hico without seeing her." Derek mumbled as I laughed. My brother was too far gone for his fiance, he always has been according to Lucian's memories.
Like he should be. Mad in love.
It's adorable seeing him like that. I shooed Derek away from my bedroom chambers as the maids and butlers rushed in hearted up bath water and picked out my outfit for the day. I managed to get a set of documents done by the time preparations were complete.
Once done, I was dressed in a form fitting thigh-length eight-button tunic, black and red in colour with elaborate embroidery designs. Long collars and cuffs were designed in tiny embroidery. There was a red piping edge on the collar and cuffs. A formal long black belt around the waist, usually where I would carry my sword but I leave it behind today. I picked a pair of black gloves. Lastly I had to put the boots on, and a cloak. I picked a shorter one today which only hung from my right shoulder, unlike the others ones I would wear that brush the floor.
I walk out the door to see that Derek has changed himself too and dressed into something more fitting for the imperial prince, rather than how he rushed here this morning.
"Ready to go?" I asked.
"Yes." He nodded and looked away intentionally avoiding eye contact, it's his way of telling that he is happy. I sighed and smiled as we walked out of the palace to the royal carriage. The carriage stopped at the capitol shopping centre where Derek made the knights buy flowers and a bunch of other gifts. I will pretend that he didn't send a bunch of gifts from Hico the minute he stepped on the soil of the capitol.
This is the definition of a man being whipped.
And apparently I have no say in it since, I have no fiance or love. My aid words, not mine.
From the capitol we teleported to the mansion of the Adarlan's. Derek looked out of it for a second before he gathered himself and we were greeted by the Duke, Duchess and their two daughters.
We walked in as we had tea with the Duke and the Duchess, while I mostly spoke business with the Duke and the on-going condition of his estate. After that the Duke and Duchess excused themselves as Asterin Adarlan, the eldest daughter came in and leaded up to the green house outside.
Aside from scolding Derek for buying too much stuff, we both received warm hugs.
I sat there listening to Derek and Asterin talk about their stuff, even though Asterin tried her best to keep me connected in the conversation, it was no use. Things couples do, don't ask me what couples do. I didn't look at a woman in the last six months- oh wait- I saw someone last night.
I sat there with a smile, as suddenly a maid came in and bowed to us. Asterin tells her to raise and asks what brought her here.
"Milady," the maid says. "Lady Esmeray came to visit."
"Evanora is here?" Asterin's eyes lit up as the maid nodded. Asterin turned to Derek who nodded lightly, before she turned back to the maid and asked her to bring Lady Esmeray here immediately.
Lady Evanora Esmeray, the daughter of the duke Esmeray family, aside from being a public figure she is known widely for her unique eye colour and beautiful appearance. Soon after I got used to my life here in this world, I watched the capitol buzz with the news about Lady Esmeray's amnesia. But soon that was thrown out like yesterday's news once the lady finished her studies as a magician and received a title from the tower.
It would be a lie to say I am not thrilled to meet her.
Especially after last night.
The glass doors opened as she walked in, elegant steps clicked against the marble floor. I watched her as she walked towards the table.
I always wondered what the hype was about this girl. This Empire had magic, people like us Royals have red eyes, I have seen people with golden eyes, turquoise eyes and much more in the span of six months. Why were purple eyes so important?
I probably now realise, it's not the eyes that are important. It's her. Her lips painted in red lipstick, parted as she saw Asterin and turned into a smile. Her whole face lit up as she smiled. Her eyes, the colour, it looked like lilac now as she stood under the sun that shined through the glass greenhouse, unlike last night where it looked purple under the moonlight. Her eyes twinkled, and I swore her eyes looked like they had glitter in them.
Everything she did, everything about her looked beautiful. For a second I wondered if this magician bewitched me because Derek looked uninterested again as Asterin was gone from his side and smiling at her friend. But as I stared at Lady Esmeray again, I felt stuck on her again. The way she threw her head back as she laughed, and how she couldn't keep her eyes open when she smiled wide.
She looked like she was glowing, or it's probably the sun playing tricks on my eyes.
She noticed me. Well, she noticed both me and Derek as Asterin led her to the table, and gracefully she curtsy and greeted us.
Her voice was soft but stern, even though she let a little bit of surprise and panic slip into it. Her eyes, which were twinkling a little while ago, were now unfocused as if her mind was working overdrive.
Elegant and grace weren't enough words for her. There was so much more, every curve and dip of her seemed to be sculpted by an artist who craved perfection. She is perfection.
"Please take a seat, it's wonderful meeting Lady Esmeray like this." I say with a smile as she takes the remaining chair beside me.
I remember her from my memory of last night, but today was different. Unlike being disoriented like last night, now I am conscious. I am not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing.
I couldn't help but smile to myself. This woman is ethereal.
I watched her as she sat silently on her chair, listening to Derek and Asterin speak. I understood Derek was aware of her since Lady Esmeray healed me last night, and now she is here.
Such consciences were suspicious, yes. But I wouldn't have it any other way, if I did maybe then I wouldn't have understood what makes her The Evanora Esmeray and would have accepted the fact she is a beautiful woman like everyone else.
Now that I see her, I refuse to accept her beauty without understanding everything that made her, her. The way her dark hair framed her face, long lashes that fluttered every single time she blinked, how shades of pink dusted her features.
I refuse to have it any other way when I would probably see her from a far at a ball and blink away from her and focus on someone else to not think about her. To forget her.
I refuse to forget her.
She watched me from the corner of her eye as I smirked at her, which made her eyes widen and turn back to Asterin and Derek. She reminded me of a frightened bunny as she panicked and avoided looking at me again.
I let out a silent chuckle as I turned to Derek and Asterin.
"I was hoping Lady Esmeray could join me on a walk around the garden?" I smiled at Lady Esmeray who looked at me with wide eyes and her lips curved into an awkward smile. Graceful and elegant, yes, but she has no control over her expressions when she is panicking.
"I...am honoured- to join you on your walk, your highness?" she stared at the round table as her answer came out as a question rather than a statement.
"Oh that would be lovely-" Asterin stared between me and Lady Esmeray and wondered if she would let her friend go with me. I am a little wounded. She is worrying about her friend instead of me. After all, I am her brother in law.
Derek managed to distract Asterin away while also making sure she knew that I would return her friend safe and sound. I turned and looked back at Lady Esmeray and I made a mistake of staring into her eyes. She stared back at me with wide eyes, as if she was trying to read me, understand me. She seemed wonderstruck and a part of me loved it.
"Lady Esmeray?" I called her name as she snapped out of it and blinked a few times and composed herself as she placed her hand on my waiting one, allowing me to escort her away, out of the glass house to the garden putting distance between us and Asterin and Derek.
"The weather is beautiful today." I said as we walked side by side, her arm hooked around mine.
"Ah, yes. It's nice here." her voice came out softer than before even though she was counting her words around me.
"I was hoping to give Derek and Asterin some time alone, I hope you don't mind me calling you out." I said, as Lady Esmeray looked a bit surprised and relaxed as she nodded.
"It's alright, your highness." She said with a small smile.
"I believe it's my first time meeting the lady, no?" I asked as Lady Esmeray looked at the grass as if they were made out of emeralds.
"Well..." she trailed off and subconsciously her grip on my arm tightened a little. I laughed as she never finished her statement.
Lady Esmeray glared at me, but her eyes were swirling with panic, frustration and lingering fear, hence the effect of the glare dimmed as she stared at me.
I smirked as her glare completely flattered.
"Why don't you tell me about last night, milady?" I asked as she closed her eyes and let out a small sigh as if she was accepting her fate.
She removed her hand from my arm, and stood in front of me as she tried to explain the situation at the best of her abilities, given her panic and nervousness. Her hands went in multiple directions and she pointed at multiple things as she explained how she is aware she shouldn't touch someone with imperial blood carelessly but she had to do it so she could heal me.
"I must say, it's a very brave thing to do." I smirked at her as she once again stared at the grass as if they were made of emeralds. "To undress the imperial-"
Lady Esmeray cut me off.
"We don't talk about that!" She yelped as she now actually glared at me with fury and embarrassment. But I couldn't help but enjoy it.
"Do we not, now?" I asked mockingly as she gave me a very frustrated look.
"No we don't!" She hissed.
"Very well." I laughed as the lady calmed down a bit even though the redness of her face didn't. Her eyes found their way back to mine as she glared at them. I held my hand out for her once again, which she took and placed her hand back on my arm as she walked with me.
"But I must thank the lady for saving my life." I said with a smile. She stared at me with her glittery eyes, and yes she toned down the glares. I have been trying my best to not look directly into her eyes.
"I did what needed to be done." She said, "It was my duty to the empire and my duty as a magician."
"Milady is very oriented to her duty." I said to which muttered something about not being fed to orgs which I knew better to not question.
"I should take my duty to the lady seriously too." I said as the lady turned to me.
"Eh?" she tilted her head as she stared with me with an awkward smile and eyes wide with confusion. The lady has completely given up on controlling her expressions.
"I shall grant Lady Esmeray whatever she wishes for in return for saving my life." I said with a polite smile, which surprisingly wasn't returned...
As Lady Esmeray stared at me with wide eyes, with the light missing behind them as if her consciousness had flown away somewhere outer space as she stood there looking at me as if I had gone crazy or am about to take her life.
Maybe both.
